Back in 2004, Google released the first beta version of Google Desktop. In the next few years, this search program would evolve into an entire sidebar interface with gadgets. In today's video, we explore a few versions of it!

As an IT consultant back then, I remember automatically uninstalling Google Desktop on hundreds of computers. The idea was ahead of it's time. The hardware that most people had at the time could not keep up...the computer would be terribly bogged down.

Yeah, I would have used it back then. But with new, Evil Google, (which unironically removed the "don't be evil" clause from its code of conduct), I'm thinking that these days I wouldn't jump on the opportunity to let them archive all the data on my local PC.

This was a trip down memory lane! I remember using Google Desktop on my pc around 2008 or so. As a kid I used to download all sorts of bloatware and other stuff just to tinker. It was such fun and I'll never understand just how I didn't get a virus lmao

You're lucky you didn't! I ended up getting a fake "antivirus" virus from a Rocketdock download, which was literally the only time I had a virus (to my knowledge) while trying to skin XP and Vista. A real AV could do absolutely Nothing against it, had to do a clean system reinstall. But I loved Google Desktop. Had real Spotlight/Quicksilver envy about Macs at the time, and here rolled in Google Desktop with a similar functionality, and no extra bullshit to slow the CPU down on Windows like some of its competitors.

@@letssaylalala Office 2003 is the successor to Office XP. Office XP has a windows 2000 look and feel, while Office 2003 is the next version of Office and has the new XP looking icons and user interface.

Oh my god, this has brought so much nostalgia... I remember having that program in around late 2007 or 2008. I was around 13 years old, basically a "kiddo" learning about the computer and Windows operating system itself and as soon as i got the internet connection in late 2007 I was so fascinated by that Windows Vista sidebar and the overall look of the system that I had to somehow put such thing in my XP (The PC was unable to run Vista, which eventually turned out to be a good thing :D ). One of such sidebars available for XP was Google Desktop and I loved it! It was the time there were endless possibilities of Windows customization, so I downloaded many Windows Vista and various other themes on Windows XP. I also tried WindowBlinds 6.0, Yahoo! Widgets, various customization tools many times. I changed theme, icons, cursors, sounds and almost everything as I wanted... With such operations, I sometimes managed to destroy the operating system completely, so my parents were mad at me... It was a wonderful time to be alive. I still consider it as the best years of my life till these days...

The reason that this looked so much like Vista's gadgets is that Google was well aware of what was coming to that operating system. Vista's development process was so long and well documented that pretty much ALL developers at the time were taking features that would be coming in Vista and implementing them in XP.

I actually remember downloading and using this back in the day, as well as customizing my iGoogle homepage. Since I was only 9 or so back then, I didn't really use it for the search feature as much as I just liked having the weather on my desktop, but this video has given me mad nostalgia either way. I've used the second version a lot back in the day. I especially liked the fact that Google Talk could be integrated into Google Desktop's sidebar as a widget.

To get the index to work correctly, you have to add a search location in the settings.

I used it a lot. I'm an interpreter and back then we didn't have Internet in the booths, I did a lot of medical interpreting and had a lot of reference documents on my laptop. It wasn't fast but it was useful.

Wow, this is amazing! The final version looks just like Vista's gadgets. I was an XP user as a kid, and eventually Viata. Man, I wish I was part of the online community back when I regularly used XP so I could have had this. I would have loved it. I kinda want an XP VM now.

Google Desktop came pre-installed on my first laptop. I used to love playing with the Side Bar. Tried to install it after I upgraded to Windows 7, but it did not support 64-bit operating systems. Still a neat piece of history and a part of my kid life.

Back in the day I used to use iGoogle, which aside from having a really bizzare name was a pretty interesting website. It was a start page that let you customize it with gadgets. Sadly it's long gone now, but it was really neat. Edit: Looks like it was actually mentioned, nice

Google desktop was great paired with Google Toolbar in Firefox 2. I never upgraded to vista from XP so having the gadgets was sweet. Thanks for the throwback!

When I was a child, I had Google Desktop installed on my computer (I created my Google account when I was 8 to 9 years old). It was a really neat app for its time. Talk about sidebar, but with variety of apps and tools you could choose to have. I remember using Halloween clock which had been making scary heartbeat sounds... that scared the pants out of me when I was little

This Google Desktop search box in the taskbar is perfect to making Windows XP looking like Windows 10 Cortana's search box. You just need to move it to the left, alongside Start button.
