This video covers the Nest home app/web settings & functions, video quality and my thoughts on the camera after a few weeks of use.
After experiencing failure after failure with cheap micro SD recording cameras and with them and suffering jerky footage, I decided to buy this Google Nest Outdoor IQ camera to allow me to record smooth footage for youtube videos.
With regard to person detection, this works better than I expected and I leave motion detection turn off. I do not get false notifications this way.
I would say you really need the Nest Aware/Aware Plus subscription with these cameras so you would want to factor that it when you are looking at prices. This video turned out longer than I expected it would but I hope you find it useful in helping you decided whether these cameras are right for you. If this video helped you to make that decision, I would be grateful if you would hit that 'like' button as this helps the video be shown to others. Good video. I liked the way you explained the active zones. It would have been nice to see some night footage also.

Thanks Tommy. There is brief night vision footage at 12:44. I can upload a longer section of night vision if you like? The picture is pretty good.

Sorry, had forgotten about that. The night vision looks good. There is some light in my driveway from a street light nearby but it's not overly bright. I presume your driveway is pretty dark as well. Does the camera work as well in picking out people at night like during the day? It would be nice to see some footage of people in view at night if you could upload some please.

@@tommyroddy9442 There's a streetlight in front of the house next door so the drive isn't that dark. I also have a security light at the front which helps. I've grabbed some footage from yesterday evening of my wife coming back home and parking up. Fantastic, thanks a lot! The App is very well designed and the features look really cool and interesting, that option to create small clips is really nice! I’m impressed, thanks a lot. Meanwhile, I did some research and I might go for a Dahua WiFi camera (probably the best cameras out there) or I might try IMOU cameras, which is a subsidiary brand of Dahua. Take a look at Amazon UK, they have one IMOU called G26EP that looks really nice. Thanks for the video once again, it’s actually better than I thought. I would get one for sure if it wasn’t so expensive! But i will take a look at Dahua cameras for now

Great video, i just got a doorbell and a outdoor camera, i noticed i stopped getting notifications on events?? does this happen to you?

Thanks. Are you still getting things picked up in your sightline? If so, I would think you're looking at an issue with your phone or the settings. Do you get notifications on your phone for when someone presses the nest hello? Have you made any changes in your google account permissions? Might sound weird, but I had an issue with the nest hello not sounding alerts on nest hub devices which was down to the 'web & app activity' permissions being disabled. If all else fails, I would reinstall the app and try again before contacting Nest support. They're not bad but I would ensure you have a drink ready because you could be on chat for a while going through basic questions. Let me know how you get on. 👍🏻

Just when you view on the app. No matter what you do it just records the same footage.

Is there no way to turn on the led ring light that surrounds the camera and leave it on permanently? I believe it activates when you talk through the camera but is there any way to keep it on?

Not that I’m aware of. It’s just meant to get someone’s attention so they know where your voice is coming from. It’s also used during setup. If you are wanting a visual deterrent there is a small led that is on and blinks when you are watching. Alternatively, if you want something more noticeable I think you could set up something via IFTTT that could turn on a light if the Nest detects motion/sound.

@@GeeWhizRS Thanks for the reply. Yes I was thinking it would be a good deterrent, it’s a shame it can’t be kept on. I wouldn’t see the problem seen as the camera is wired.

@@lazybeatx1843 I agree. But this is google you are dealing with. You can’t even remove the nest branding from the footage. That’s my main bugbear. Cracking in every other way though.

@@GeeWhizRS Yea true, I’ve read that they are releasing new nest camera’s this year so I think I’ll wait to see what they bring to the table. A battery doorbell would be nice but I’m not holding my breath.

@@lazybeatx1843 it’s not a big problem to wire the doorbell in. If you have the nest hubs it’s a no brainer.

I'm beginning to think that no Americans buy these NEST cameras. Seems like every single review is from our friends in the UK, so I'm not sure what's up with that. Anyway, I did purchase the outdoor IQ and doorbell. The IQ did not come with the setscrew, and the phone pad was damaged. Night vision is pretty bad considering the price point. It's livable but just saying'. I'm more annoyed with the missing and damaged hardware.

Hi Daniel. I’m not sure how popular the camera is in the US. I do know you guys have access to the camera using a 5ghz WiFi signal, whereas here in the UK that is disabled for us. I’m don’t know which part you mean regarding the ‘set screw’ and ‘phone pad’ I’m afraid. It’s strange you find the night vision poor. It works fine for me. The only thing I’m wondering is if your camera isn’t pointing down as much as mine. The night vision relies on infrared LEDs bouncing light off objects in the same way a torch beam would. If that beam is fired horizontally into the distance the light won’t reach an object to illuminate it. Hope that makes sense. With the doorbell, did you manage to get that announcing on your nest mini/home properly or are you just using it with your mobile phone? I only ask because I initially had a problem where the footage was shown in my nest hub when the bell was pressed but I got no notification sound alerting me that someone was at the door. It turned out you need to have ‘app and web history’ enabled in your google account for it to work.
