Night mode cannot have a "pro" mode since it works by stacking photos.

@@zero1451987 they are not similar at all as far as I am aware. They take a more traditional approach of longer shutter speeds and you need a tripod to get the amazing advertised results. In contrast Google's approach is all about taking multiple photos and using them to "cancel" out the noise and add color "intelligently".

@@DavidMulderOne yes they are. Huawei stack 4 photos to make better night shots. The difference is you can change shutter speed and iso on Huawei p20 pro but not on the pixel 3. You can handheld Huawei to take night shot just the same as you can on pixel 3. I have both phones so I know

I find it performs its best when you're in a dark but not absolutely pitch blank environment. From my own testing, in a perfectly dark room it doesn't really do anything, but in a room that's dark but ever so slightly lit by say moonlight through a window is where it's strength really comes through and makes the space seem as if someone turned a light on.

are you dumb? no camera works in a pitch dark environment! you need at least some sort of light for the camera to capture before it can apply any algorithmic image enhancement.

The S9 Plus has an incredible manual mode. In auto mode though, the S9 tends to overexpose front camera selfies and make then a little soft.

OnePlus 6\6t's Night Mode is much smarter. It can automatically detect when the phone is hand-held or put on a tripod or on a surface and adjust the shutter speed due to that.

Pixel's nice for people who just want to point and shoot, but I value the manual mode built into other phones, as they allow you to get similar results, with more creative flexibility. And I'm not a big fan of night not looking like night any more. Definitely interested in what you do with it though!

Yeah, I had no idea it didn't have any manual controls. I've never paid any attention to the pixel series before. It was definitely a surprise and a bummer for me, but people like me are not their intended market. I'll keep piddling with it though, since there are so many people who like it and have asked me about it.

You can just install a manual photo app. They have an open API for their picture processing chip so a good manual app should get similar shots except for night sight.

So far I've tried Lightroom mobile, the moment app, and camera fv5. The first two only allow for a1 sec shutter speed, and the latter has a 4 second exposure max for the pixel 3. It's not a big deal to me personally, since I shoot with my dslrs, but it's something people keep asking me, so I'll keep looking around for a better app.

Why is it so hard for people to digest the fact that the purpose of this Night Sight feature is to gather more light as much as possible, and not to limit it only to as much as what the sensor itself could get in a normal shooting settings?? Dude, you activated Night Sight! You should expect it to brighten up the photo, not make it a typical low light image! If you want a normal low light image, just forget about Night Sight and simply use the normal camera mode and you'd get your desired results.

Yeah, love the stock camera app on the V30+. I just put the Google Camera app on my V30+ and the Night Sight is freaking crazy. It can take photos in complete darkness, once you crank up the brightness up. @@franj.g4941 zoom in all the way, tap on the moon so the light gets lowered by it self then lower the light manually (slider). After that toy should be able to see the moon perfectly with its details, no overblown image. Also I usually lock the light so I can take multiple pictures

Looks like the night mode actually makes it more daylight like. Does not look like real night scene. Though impressive nonetheless. Other phones can do this too with bracketing functionality?

Yeah, it pushes it pretty hard. I'd rather have some manual controls and the ability to do long exposures, but I realize people like me are not their intended market. The software is definitely impressive though!

This shows a fundamental misunderstanding about how night mode works. It doesn't take a long exposure photo. It takes multiple photos. That photo you said had iso9000 was probably 6 1s exposures at iso1500.

Oh I knew that's what it was doing, I just said that I personally would prefer the ability to do a single, longer exposure, rather than stacking 6 1 sec images. I also understand that this mode, and this phone overall is not designed for users like me in mind. If I want a long exposure, I'll just use my dslrs. For those who want the simplicity and ease though, this phone is fantastic and it does a great job with night sight for most other scenarios.

@@BrentHall the point of this not taking a long exposure photo is so that you can actually take those night city shots without a tripod. I have the 3 and I'm also blown away at how it keeps the picture blur-free even with shaky hands.

No I get it. I do understand what the Pixel camera is as well as it's target audience (and that's not me personally). I made this video because people asked me to. I showed what the pixel night sight is good at and what it's not not so good at. For what it is and for it's intended audience, I think it's absolutely great! The images it's able to achieve in night sight mode under normal low light and city style images are quite amazing, especially being able to do it hand held! It will do exactly what most people will want it to do at night, grab great snapshots in a super easy-to-use way.

So it's probably worth noting that night sight actually trades advantage of small movements to the camera by stacking and aligning the various shots taken (similar to super resolution and de-noising/image averaging methods you can achieve in Photoshop). I doubt it would do well with astrophotography regardless, but it's definitely better to understand how something works in order to get the best out of it.

All i want is a pro-mode on the google camera, i want to be able to set shutterspeed and iso and it can auto the rest. But i still want googles magic and i wont get that with another manual app (which i have to pay for..) I tried to take cool pictures of a waterfall, but without shutter speed control i couldnt get the effect i wanted.

Part of the reason that it performs so well in a hand held environment is that it was designed that way. It uses natural movements in a human to take several almost identical photos that it then uses (along with tons of machine learning) to create the final picture.

The apps work differently for each phone, so they can have different max settings for different phones. Camera FV 5 only allows for a 4 sec max shutter speed and up to ISO 6400 on the Pixel 3, whereas on my S9 Plus it will only allow for a max shutter speed of 1/10 sec and 3200 ISO. Neither of which is good enough to get a decent picture in the dark as I tried it, nor is it nearly as good as the native samsung camera app for long exposures, which allows for a 10 sec max shutter speed.

On a tripod Night Sight combines six 1s photos in extreme low-light conditions. I agree that this isn't always enough, they should have given us the option to choose up to 30s (single exposure with HDR+ tone mapping) or maybe three photos with 10s. It's also sad that they don't offer raw in Night Sight mode.

Google listened and the Pixel 4 can combine up to fifteen 16s exposures and can save the result as a dng file. Apparently the Pixel 3 got an update, which allows for fifteen 4s exposures. But I wouldn't update as you will lose the white balance presets.

Shoot raw and with camera FV 5 pro with long+ exposure and 30sec. My potato phone can do that. And try maxing out quality in settings

I have tried that app, and in raw with the highest quality settings I could get. Camera FV-5 only allows for a 4 sec shutter speed and ISO 6400 on the Pixel 3, which is nowhere near enough to help make a decent image in those dark conditions.

That option does not exist on the Pixel 3. I've had that app on 7 different phones over the last 4 years, so I'm fairly confident I know how to navigate it. 4 sec is the max it will allow on the Pixel 3 unfortunately.

So I just tried it, and Lightroom only allows for up to a 1 sec exposure, and a max of ISO 7111 for the Pixel 3, and on my S9 Plus it it allows for only a 1/10 sec shutter speed and max ISO of 4500.

ISO is a measure of the sensor's sensitivity to light. The higher number the ISO the brighter the image will be.

That's part of what it does. It takes multiple images and stacks them together, which will reduce the noise from the high ISOs.

It definitely has a different look and feel to it than what the Pixel 3 can and does produce. They're both good for different things, but I know I personally do prefer to have manual control over things and get those long exposures and just be able to dial in my own settings.

Yeah, it's software based. I'm sure other companies could do something similar if they spent the money and time to develop the software, but I doubt they will, at least not any time soon. Most other phones have a pro mode or manual controls which will give you a lot more options for low light photography and I think most phone companies are fine with that right now.
