The Google Sheets Data Validation option can be used for such tasks as
ensuring only text is typed in certain cells, only numbers are typed in certain
cells, only numbers are typed that are between a preset range, selecting an
item from a drop-down list, or selecting an item from a range.
A way to ensure, for example, only text is typed in a cell of a spreadsheet is
by using the ISTEXT function formula. This method ensures at least a basic
validation.

To apply data validation rules to a cell, click it. Then, select Data Validation
either from the Data Menu or by right-clicking on the cell. Next, select a
criterion.
When an invalid input is typed in a cell, you can set Google Sheets to display a warning or reject the input. In the later case, you have the option to display
a message. For example, in a Name field, if a number is typed, you can display a message like "Please type the name".
