I have to think you're going to want some additional structure under that winch. A 12k is going to put some torque on that 3/16" plate. You may want to think about putting some box tube across under it and a front-to-back brace, so the torque doesn't twist the bottom on the box. You might also find that the fairlead isn't happy being used as a directional redirect; although if you mostly stick to rolling loads it may not be an issue. Great job otherwise- I have trailer envy.

I installed a winch plate after the fact on my PJ Gooseneck buggy hauler. The plate from PJ is a 1/2" thick. It was very heavy and took some time to get it in between the uprights to where I could weld it.
@dm-zx7xb
@dm-zx7xb 2 года назад
I used harbor freight's receiver plate for my 12k harbor freight winch. I think it's 3/16 at best and maybe only 15 inches long. I used it to pull stumps out of the ground by strapping one end to a giant tree and the winch wire to the smaller stump. Sometimes even using a pulley to double the power (even though the winch receiver plate isn't effected by the double pull capacity). Anyways, after 11 successful stump pulls I could see that the plate was bent which caused the left and right winch halves to be out of clock. Anyways, if that winch mount isn't restructured on that trailer it will almost certainly take on a new shape. Even with a rolling load I think you could watch it flex as something goes up your future ramps. I'm not trying to give disrespectful criticism, I'm just advising what has and hasn't worked for me personally. Your mount is at a disadvantage seeing as to how long a span it is between you neck uprights compared to my 14 inch span. Love the build!

One suggestion is you're gonna want a deep cycle battery for that application. I made the same mistake with my dump trailer, the constant cycling will kill a regular battery in no time, also deep cycle battery's produce a more constant power over the cycle of the battery, as opposed to a regular battery is designed for short burst of power. Just a suggestion, loving the build!
@keithhansen3963
@keithhansen3963 2 года назад
Actually, deep cycle batteries are not designed for heavy draws like the jacks or the winch. Deep cycles are designed for handling long low draws. Automotive batt's are for deep and shorts heavy burts(like a starting motor on a engine). What is most important is immediate recharges.

Thank you!
@cornfed123567
@cornfed123567 2 года назад
@@keithhansen3963 deep cycles are used in the equipment industries for things like scissor lifts and now the hybrid manlifts. those loads are way more than what the jacks and winch will ever use most people dont know what they are doing with deep cycle batteries, they fully discharge them and try to run them at a 15% charge then on. deep cycle batts are great for running hyd pumps. my company rents out elec dump trailers and scissor lifts, all of which run deep cycle batteries
@keithhansen3963
@keithhansen3963 2 года назад
@@cornfed123567 certainly. But take a look at the amp hour rating ratio against the full load requirements of those pieces of equipment. The AH ratings are high to allow those to be cycled without drawing heavy loads. I seemed to have stirred the honeys nest, but there is a lack of understanding with what “Deep Cycle” batteries are for. There is a reason they aren’t used in the entire automotive world, yet deep cycles are used in say, golf carts. Put a small deep cycle in a lift and it will drain it down immediately. Put a large amount in parallel and it will draw the entire bank slowly. Those rams and the winch will put large draws quickly and he has only one battery. Flood acid starter batteries can handle that. Bass boats use two batt types, one for starting and a deep for the trolling motor( which pulls a steady slow draw). Rv’s benefit from deep cycle as they are slow draws which starter batteries don’t like. My company has several dump trailers and we learned our lesson. Starter batteries and we recharge religiously. If you don’t believe me, just research it.
@dm-zx7xb

I'd say for 80 dollars and Walmart's 3 year free replacement warranty, I think his choice isn't a bad one. He probably won't be using the winch and making multiple 80 foot drags onto the trailer every other day. Is it the absolute premium battery for the trailer? Maybe not but I'm not sure if he could find much of a better deal. I'm pretty sure a group 65 is in stock at every Walmart in the US and for less than 30 dollars a year and pretty much guaranteed a working battery, I'd be interested if there was a more economical solution.

Do this all the time at work... Any straight & vertical piece will work, I use a fiberglass driveway marker because we have thousands of them for reusable survey markers. Fasten it to your ball with a velcro strap or some zipties. Using your rear view mirror, center it on the hitch and when you bump it, the trailer should drop right on. Perfect for 1-man hitchup.

Car hauler here, look into getting a shocker hitch receiver for the trailer. It isolates the trailer from the truck with an airbag to take some of the NVH from the trailer away from the truck. Also, make sure the spare tire sits sturdy in its mount, because if it shakes as you go down the road, the rattle does transmit down the gooseneck into the truck as well.

Out of all trailers built, this style holds a spot in my heart. That said, I don't know your lifestyle and wondered if when modifying a bed on the trucks that move them... would it be a "cool factor" to make the four wheel drive into a designated tow only and come up with some "big boy toy sized truck" on the back where it has tool boxes, a headache rack, dual stacks with the chrome turn outs on top.... possibly a air box with its air stack, lights mounted in the back like the big rigs... and if really lost your blooming mind, a air lift tag axle to allow even bigger trailers. That would involve using a different blueprint for lack of words. "Drewmans driveway is a great channel that did kinda go away after life threw him some curve balls Waldo, but never fear, he's back and finishing a really unique truck build. Only Deboss has had the courage to do the same "differently" and his will be true art form with his million dollar credit limit. Since I have a child like imagination with all these ways to "Spend Waldo's Money" I would use what so far is a wide open chalkboard platform. I like the COE body style of the early fifties as in ford, chevy international all did this for a short while and believe you me, they draw major attention. I think one of these would get you past the silver play button an just maybe a gold button as I dream or degrees in my definitely mellow old years of life. Oh howdy would it be fun for me to go down to your place in the morning, hang out till you cry uncle and send me out on a parts run for muffler bearings. Ah yes I have wasted enough of your time, hopefully you read this while doing another cooking video that made me get up and fix a concoction of my own with lots of juice that could just be a meal its self. Yes, I wish to give you a great merry christmas, a blessed new year and ideas that should take this channel right up the charts to number one and for everyones viewing pleasure. For those hood struts, turn them so that the rod faces down. The oils in the strut will keep those seals healthy longer and it won't fail so quickly. Also you may be able to play with the geometry a bit to get the force you need with just one strut. There's some calculators floating around.

Build looks great! I like how you layed out the edges and everything to prevent water pooling. If I may make one suggestion, those gas struts have a tiny bit of oil in them that help to lubricate the seals. If you orient them with the rod pointing downwards the oil keeps the deals from cracking and they last much longer.

Lesson learned when I built a trailer and built some boxes in, the box lids need a full rim lip that will catch over the outside of the box to prevent rain from getting in, it will also make the lid more rigid and harder for someone to break into. The way you have them done you will want to include some drain holes and paint the inside of the box with truck bed liner or the like. That trailer is bad ass, its nice to make things for yourself as you can take the time to do things the way you want and you don't have to spend time undoing bad ideas of others.

Again man your video quality and editing is incredible Waldo! Are you going to be incorporating a back up camera into the head rack for the duramax? You mentioned how hard it was seeing the ball in a 4 door might be a good option to incorporate

Great video, Waldo! Trailer looks great. Did you think to add water drain holes in your toolbox and accessories box? I love when you get the magdrill out, to avoid the tedious drilling with a hand drill. 👍
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 2 года назад
Thanks, Greg! Yep, I cut the corners out of the floors for water to drain out. I couldn't bring myself to make these ones weathertight. It's a ton of effort and isn't really necessary for this 😂

Careful with hydraulic jacks that can lower while you are driving and cause major damage to the trailer. Also looked like the left jack as you pull the trailer wasnt up all the way when the right jack was.

Just curious, it's a 12,000 lb winch but the only structure it has is 3/16 plate. If you try pulling anything substantial it's gonna bend that plate really easily.
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 2 года назад
It's 3/16 plate, but it's backed up by a piece of 5" c-channel on one side and it has an 1/8" plate at 90 degrees on the other side to keep it from buckling. It's basically like a fabricated piece of 12" c-channel. I think it'll be strong enough 👍
@ZacKoch
@ZacKoch 2 года назад
@@WaldosWorld idk man you might be right, but watch the footage for the flex when you simply added the winch and battery. I get what you're saying about it being a fabricated c channel, but once the bottom starts pulling up you've compromised the integrity of the c channel. It appears adding some simple box tubing as a support would be simple. Idk... Who knows until she blows haha!

Just wondering, are you planning on painting the trailer? Can’t wait to see more on the Duramax flatbed build.
@WaldosWorld

Yep, I have some epoxy primer and urethane paint, although I'm sort of considering getting it hot dip galvanized. It's kind of large, so that might be a challenge 🤷‍♂️

I was thinking the same thing, could even do steel line with short flex hose connections to the jacks and pump to allow for movement and vibration.
