Sounds like there are certain teachers that don't or won't enforce their own rules of no cell phone use during class.

This is a no brainer. There is no need for students to have cell phones in school. It is a big distractor for the student and it’s a nightmare for the teacher dealing with them.

Even in the 2000s and 2010s, students had phones put in a basket. I'm 24 and didn't have a phone when I was a kid. I never had one until I was about to start high school. Even then, I put it in my locker. If I had it, I put in a basket the teacher had us put the phones in. We could have them back after class. It worked for me.

I think all smart phones and tablets and social media should be illegal for anyone under 21 - want your kids to have a cell phone for emergencies they can have an old style flip phone

I'm part of the original protesters in the 60s and 70s in my small town. I still agreed there should be discipline in school and especially during class. Students also use cell phones to cheat.

Never had one when I was in school. If the teacher has one then that should be enough. If they have to take them to class teachers should collect them at the door.

All classrooms have either landline phones or intercoms that can be used for emergencies. There is no need for cell phones in school.

I have all my students put all the phones in a container I keep in my sight, in the back of the room, at all times. If I see a phone out in my class, they go straight to the principal's office. I have a 3 strike rule about that. If I send a student to the office a 3rd time, & I have a deal worked out with the principal on this, their parents are called. We work out a deal with the parents to make sure their kid does not bring the phone to school. If that doesn't work, I save up the money to replace the phone & throw it out the window.

There were no Cell Phone or Calculators in my school.... I didn't die....

when I was in school the teachers didn't even have a phone in the classroom. the only phones were in the office.

Calls for bans on these in classrooms, or even in schools full stop are about 18-20 years late. Ever since cell phone cameras have been advanced enough to take detailed photos of people, they shouldve been banned right then. I think alot of parents don't grant permission for their childs digitally transmissible image(or any photo) to be taken by most other students & remember that other kids have no right to collect those images without the person being photographed's consent as those subjects are nearly always minors and not in a public place (even at 'public' schools). On top of that, the schools have a legal duty to enforce any media restrictions of every student in the school & that simply is not possible with so many high spec camera enabled phones on the premisis, the free use of which being tollerated by school staff. Just this year public schools in Queensland have begun a ban on the use of mobile(cell) phones at school and there was 1 or more schools in the south-east states of Australia a couple of years ago that trialed total bans while inside school grounds, one at least with locked bags (I think they worked a bit like lock wheel trolleys in car parks). Those trial(s) seemed to've had pretty much all positive results where they matteted most. If you're concerned about your kids phone use at school and still want your kid to have one there for emergencies, get 'em a burner just for school hours with a prepaid sim so they don't need to transfer their sim every day... & gouge the camera lens a bit too so they cant take photos or vids. & P.S: In case any parent out there is still ignorant enough in 2024 not to know, no cell phone in the whole world (I'm reasonably sure) even needs a sim inserted to make emergency services calls. (28/Jan/2024-11:22pm🇦🇺EST)

I teach middle school. We already have this in most schools. However, students still need to figure out whether to use their phones or sneak them as a teacher can’t watch each student individually when they have 30 - 35 students in a classroom at once. One common trick is to ask for a restroom pass. Now, you can’t deny little Jonny or Susie the right to restroom use. They then go and check their phones, send texts, watch videos, take pictures, etc. Teachers have little to no recourse. Society has created this, and the pendulum has swung too far left. And most of this is due to feelings, not logic. Discipline has eroded. When a student receives a punishment, the chief concern these days is what race and gender they are not, what they did, and how to mitigate it. Everything you see going on in society is done at the micro level in the schools. No one wants to suspend students as it interferes with their learning and is looked at as a reward as it’s a day off. No one gets retained because they failed, so they don’t do anything as they will move on anyway, so they move to the next grade, lacking either the skills or the drive (or a combination of both) to complete the work. Then, they enter the workforce with a 25-dollar-an-hour mentality with 2-dollar-an-hour skills or work ethic.

as someone who worked in schools the kids are always on their cell phones and the teachers spend more time surfing ebay then teaching.. solution is small cell phone lockers IN every room.. cells go into them at start of class ... pick them up later ... still in room in event of emergency

Excellent idea. I have seen some interesting topics like buying burner phones for their kids, eliminating smart phone use completely. Social media is not good for children.

I still wonder what K-12 students need a cellphone while under a teacher's supervision? What happens in schools that is considered "an emergency" where a faculty intervention is not immediately available? Why are cellphones considered "necessary" today when they did not exist 40 years ago? We had calculators, but NOT in class or during a test.

When parents dont do there job then someone has to do it for them and it ruins it for everyone

They should fully ban phones in schools, but also UPHOLD this ban... not just have a school guards / teachers that if caught students with phones after ban is implemented just say "don't let me caught you again" instead of punishing student on his card / record and similar....
