GoPro Awards: Tree Well Rescue at Mt. Baker

Tree wells are a danger wherever there is fresh snow. Francis Zuber was skiing in Washington when he caught glance of a partially buried snowboard. Ian Steger, a rider from a different group, was buried upside-down and unable to free himself. Francis, trained in avalanche-rescue protocol, sprung into action to clear Ian's airway.
The mountains don't care how much experience you have or how careful you are. Accidents can and will happen-riding with company that is prepared and educated is the best way to stay safe in dangerous terrain. Thank you, GoPro Awards recipient Francis, for showing us what it means to "Be a HERO" 🙏

This gives me insane chills. I did fall once into a small tree well, and while it was nothing even close to this, I can 100% appreciate how much trouble this guy was in. So glad to read everyone made it down ok.

I see people talk about luck and equipment but let's not forget the fitness required either. If he goes down hill a few more meters it would take significantly longer to get to him and he would have been way more exhausted. Now add a long day of snowboarding to the mix and it could be too late. Glad the rescuer was fit enough, prepared and lucky all at once.

I'm genuinely wondering how he survived, his face was covered with snow he couldn't breathe Edit: ok the guy that saved him did an interview and apparently there was a small air pocket under there, but he tried to move and it collapsed so maybe cause the snow was really thin? idk

Seems like he resigned to the fact it was over by the way he was so calm. Probably felt the biggest rush of relief and gratefulness. The fact this guy decided to check out a spot he had never saw definitely makes it seem like it was fate for him to find him. Something told him to go that way.

15 min of air you have under snow I believe b before you suffocate on your own CO2. I don't know if it's different in a tree well because the snow is lightly packed in there. But I believe for Avalanche it's 15 minutes to find someone before they're dead
@efenili
@efenili Год назад
@@StrangeLittleGarden Does the 15 minutes take into account "best case" scenario? I would imagine hanging upside and/or panicking make it a lot shorter? The fact that guy seemed so calm is crazy.
