Good stuff You should make the test at -30 when you keep the batteries warm in your pocket and put it in and start recording to see how long it would last.

If you're curious about the technical side, the reason the GoPro is turning off once you start recording is because the battery is so cold that it can only provide a tiny amount of current (due to how the chemistry reacts to the cold). As soon as the camera tries to draw more than a small amount of current, the voltage drops on the battery and the GoPro thinks it's flat. If it tried to stay running anyway, it might actually be able to continue recording, although it might also glitch and behave weirdly since the voltage might drop so far that the electronics no longer work as intended. I also wonder whether the battery might warm up if the camera kept going, and thus the voltage might actually rise during use, but I doubt the small heat generated by the battery could compete with the extreme cold.

This has been a real struggle for me - switched from GoPro to the Osmo Action for this exact reason and it works really well in below freezing temps. Haven't been to -30 though. GoPro always recommends keeping the battery warm but it's just not realistic to keep doing that when you're outside! They love using those ski shots in advertising though ;)

I'm pretty stoked even with the -20 performance. I was having troubles with the regular battery at -10 when it was stored inside my jacket chest pocket!
@KaneDoesOutdoors
@KaneDoesOutdoors 2 года назад
@@JustinOutdoors I got rid of my GP8 because it was so bad in cold weather. I'll see how the Osmo Action holds up - but maybe I'll go back to GP in the future. My dream is an action camera with f1.8 or f2.0 aperture. Maybe it's just a dream, but that would really help with low light performance.

I've been curious about these batteries! Glad you did this test on them. I don't think I'll ever need it to go quite as cold as you (you're a beat, by the way...) but I am tired of my standard batteries failing in the cold. Now I just wish I had a Hero 9 instead of a Hero 8 so I could use the Enduro batteries! 🤦‍♂

I’ve got a hero 9 and unless you’re dealing with moderate cold temps, anything below -5 or -10 nukes my GoPro. Doesn’t look like the enduro will help the situation.

@@Evan_Le5 Ya, I haven't gone below 0F (-18C) this year, but at those temps my Hero 8 was basically useless. When I record on my snowmobile I put my GoPro in the clear scuba dive case. Another snowmobile gentleman I know does the same but he wraps a hand warmer around it with a rubber band. He says it does quite well with the combined air temperature and wind chill. Perhaps the dive case doesn’t really work for you with the microphone but the hand warmer might be a nice idea when out in the elements. Of course I keep the GoPro as warm as possible when not in use, snowmobile storage spot, inside jacket, bottom of sleeping bag and gear loft of hot tent
@JustinOutdoors
@JustinOutdoors 2 года назад
Hand warmers can be a great hack! I usually keep it in my jacket chest pocket - but even then, I've had the regular battery fail on me when skiing. The Enduro battery has been doing a lot better.

Not sure if you still are using the GoPros. I sold all of mine about a year ago, I had like 4 with like 16 batteries. They're all garbage in the cold & its not even the batteries, you can put the body in the freezer and it will lock up the video but the audio keeps going. It's done it to me with the Hero 9 & 10. Long story short, GoPro does NOT have a cold rating on their devices. Bottom line... so I went with the DJI Action 3, bought 3 of them and they haven't faulted once. They have a cold rating and with the newer lithium batteries, I've done multiple time lapses this winter doing my cabin series for several hours and was shocked when I found them in the dark 3, 4, 5 hours later and the camera was still recording.

Thanks for the Test, brotha... I shoot a lot with the GoPro using regular batteries. I shot a few weeks ago in -19°C @1080/24 and it sucked the battery down in about 20 minutes. I may upgrade to the Enduro just for giggles!.. Thanks again for the review...

BTW if the camera was warm it probably would not shut down...

The first normal battery lasted a little while, then I used the enduro and got some good time out of it but when it died, the other three normal batteries did nothing. Really hating gopro lately. Have used other action cams, my phone and even an old dslr which work perfectly fine in -15 to -25. Feels like a fishy way for them to get people to buy newer cameras, batteries and accessories. The hero 9 I have is also the least accessible/user friendly camera I’ve ever used. For now I’ll have to deal with not being able to make any good winter content. Thank you for showing the enduro so I don’t waste my money!

I'm thinking about getting GoPro 11 as a gift for coming New Year and test it outside after recording some time indoors. It could be down to -50°C in December or January in the region I live in. I've watched some reviews complaining about overheating in 5.3K 60fps with horizon lock, so it might be the right camera for me in winter.

Old ones also did that if you put them in warm place for an hour they would still not boot up the gopro, you had to charge them couple seconds and then it booted up with 30% battery left or so. I am wondering that is it the same for enduro.

Great to see these companies taking colder weather enthusiasts more seriously. Below about -10 (down to about -30, where I tend to wimp out :) ) I keep my camera batteries in a bag around my neck, and swap them out as needed. I've been able to warm the first one up that way back to about 50% charge just in time for the second one to fail. So keeping a couple of these in the bag would really make the video stuff easier. But all this does beg the question: what were you filming on to make this "battery test" video??? 😄

As an Australian I can't even imagine -25° (even though I live at just over 1km elevation in a colder part of Aus). I need to visit Canada some day! Btw my guess is that the enduro batteries are using a different chemistry to normal lithium batteries.

Here’s an idea. Sometimes at more moderate temps if you warm up the camera in a pocket next to your skin you can get the camera to turn back on. I wonder if the enduro would do that?

Got the enduro batteries yesterday, took them for a trial run this morning on the ski hill. temp was about 8F, it was chilly. I had the go pro and my batteries inside my jacket on the gondola ride up. Took out the camera at the summit for about 5 minutes, started skiing, hit record. 4K 120 / High boost. The gopro recorded for about 33 seconds then shut down. Pretty disappointed. Anyone else feel like the firmware has something to do with it? I remember filming in much colder weather with standard batteries and getting better performance.
