Appearance: GoPro Media Team
Episode 2 of 3: Resolutions, Frame Rates and FOV
Topics: All Camera Modes, Resolutions and Fields of View (FOV)
In the second episode of the GoPro Field Guide, we meet up mountainside with Media Team members Abe Kislevitz and Caleb Farro to hear their take on Resolutions, Frame rates, and Fields of View. Abe walks us through the different resolutions, from 4K all the way down to WVGA and their respective frame rates. He clues us in about the best uses for each of the modes, from POV, follow cam, slo-motion and gear mounted shots, to the best modes for RU-vid and Instagram videos. Abe points out that there is a trade off between high frame rate and high resolution.
Another option that GoPro users have to customize their footage is Field of View. Changing the Field of View between Wide, Medium, and Narrow is essentially the same thing as zooming in, but it does this by cropping in on the sensor instead of digitally zooming, which means higher quality footage. For the best results, Abe suggests having an end goal in mind and experimenting with different resolutions, frame rates, and fields of views to achieve this.

Great series of tutorials. I've found each one very informative. I would mention that I was having difficulty with this one because I wasn't seeing these options on my GoPro/App. After an hour of cursing, I realized that my firmware was out of date. Once I updated it, I was off to the races. Perhaps in the future you might start your lessons with, "Before you proceed you might want to make sure you're running the latest firmware ...".

Question for you guys. I've been following your tips, yet when I upload to RU-vid the quality isn't that great. It's good but nowhere near as crisp as I'm seeing in this video. I use Final Cut Pro X and I export via Compressor using the recommended MPEG4 format using H.264 codec set to high quality with as higher bitrate as I dare. I've even tried 30000 kbps but it just doesn't look as crisp as your videos. Not sure what editing suite you use, but it looks good with the videos you produce. I get a lot of lossless compression noise, especially on action shots POV like mountain biking etc. So just wondering if you've any advice for best formats for exporting video in preparation for uploading to RU-vid? Any help greatly appreciated!! :)

Ben Goyette Thanks, but have used that guide before but there's something up with the export. I'm trying using Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 which is obviously massive files but hopefully without it being compressed again using mpeg and H.264 it'll be better... I used to have no problem with Adobe Premier but FCPX and Compressor seem to be causing issues... dunno.. :(

Great video guys, really help me understand what I have been doing wrong, only question is I do not do a lot of high paced sports and do more vlog and pick up an shoot style videos, I changed my fps to 1080/60 and noticed the video was much more lets say slow motion, so what I am getting at is it best to stick with 1080/30? At that fps everything is more fluid. Also I believe you can not use preview at 1080/60 with the app is that something that will be in future updates.Thanks hope I made sense in what I was asking. Oh by the way I am using a hero sessions 4.

Well done, really helped. I have been uploading my GoPro to RU-vid and the video footage has been disappointing. I think if I switch from 60 FPS to 30 will make it better. I am also using 2.7k and Shotcut for editing. What do you think of Shotcut? Thanks, Robert

This helped me understand how to best take video on our gopro a lot better. I am very interested in taking 60fps+ footage during our trip to Iceland to slow it down in post and I was really confused about how to do that. Once I found out how to do it in post, it's pretty easy but I never knew that there was a lot to know about, especially how the frame rate you shoot at matters. I never knew that "Okay. We shot all our videos at 30FPS. Now we have lost the option of slowing it down in post." Thanks again. 2.7K30FPS for most video, and 1080p60FPS for slow motion. Got it!

I just bought a hero4 silver I made a couple videos while snowboarding with 1080/60 on a GoPro pole but when I view the raw unedited video on my iPhone it looks grainy and not clean like I see on RU-vid. Is that because I haven't edited the footage? I'm a total newb so thanks in advance.

What resolution and FOV settings would be best used for an exterior, followed by an interior real estate walkthrough with a hero4 silver. I like the 1440 as it captures the ceiling fixtures and flooring in the frame however the walls look curved. Using 1440 I cant select linear fov.
@robertharkness2094
@robertharkness2094 9 лет назад
Quick question. When using 1440p and using the 4:3 to wide filter in GoPro studio does the filter crop the image or stretch the image? If it does stretch the image is there any difference in using superview in 1080p vs 1440p with the 4:3 to wide filter? Also in GoPro studio I notice you can crop video but is there anyway (easy) to do this to a 1080 size?

I'm a bit confused, if I record in 2.7k would I see more above and below and side to side than I would 1440p 4:3. I get that 2.7k is a higher resolution but does that mean it literally records a wider fov or it records the same fov as same 1080p and just has more detail, which would mean 1440p 4:3 stretched would show more than 2.7k would just at a lower resolution right? thanks

Question for you's. I have been watching some of your videos. I dirt bike and I would like my videos to have less motion blur in them. What frame rate and resolution should I be using? I was using my default 1280x960 30 fr. Corel video studio doesn't have this They have 1280x720 30fr. There for my project isn't matched. I get messages from You tube to put my video into a streamable file format too. Is it better to use higher frames when dirt biking? I would be so grateful for feedback on my issue.
