It seems that my Media Mod was defective! You can check my updated microphone review here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7dz8Rz2wvGM.html
I highly recommend getting an external mic for it. I built the foundation for my channel with nothing but a gopro and will always have a soft spot for them. I don’t use mine as much anymore though. I’ve got a 7 and a 9, thinking about buying the 11 as well for those times that I do need it.
That magnetic swivel clip is so much fun! Definitely one of the most useful accessories I’ve found 👍 As for the mic quality, I THINK there’s a menu setting to enable the mod’s mic, so maybe this was the camera’s internal mic recording inside the frame and getting some weird sounds?
Hey Tom, thanks a lot for the tip! I didn't know there were settings specific for the media mod mic. I can't be sure but it should have been in the default mode, thus taking most the sound from the front mic, but I'll have to look deeper into it and make further tests. The magnetic clip is really great, both as a clip and as a stand on rails and magnetic surfaces!
@@leonardodoesmore the REALLY interesting part to me is how great the 11’s built in mic is! I’m always impressed by it. Add a little bit of Voice Isolation in Final Cut and it’s perfect.
@@tombuck That's very true! With very minimal additional effort in post production the built in mic sounds amazing. Makes me wonder if the Media Mod is really needed, other than in a few niche cases
Agreed, in this test the built-in mic is far better. In the next few days I will post a new video taken hiking in the woods, in a less extreme environment
I also have the GP7 Hero and was thinking of adding the GPH11 to my documentary travel-kit. This was very helpful, as you showed- the microphone sucks (yes, I saw the other videos with the updated mic-test and can as an audion engineer also tell what it is that isn't good enough about the non-broken mic as well). What's worse is they just made a faulty one-whoops-and you had to go through the hassle to get it replaced. This shows unprofessionalism from GP (which I have encountered elsewhere also, although I'm happy enough with what the GP brings me). The time-lapse was very good, I watched it several times on different screens, just in case. There was almost as much noise present in both of the camera footage, although the GP11 has better "colour correction". Thank you very much for this video! Although the GP11 has new, very cool features, I might wait for an updated product. The GP7 is still very good and in handy use. Once again, thank you for this review!
I have the GP7 so this review was helpful for me to see the differences in picture quality, especial the low light in your time lapse video. They seem to be enough to make the purchase but first I need to see what I can sell my Hero 7 for or wait until I have the extra money, things are tight. Thanks again for your review, it was very helpful.
I'm glad I could be helpful! The difference in video quality is very noticeable especially in low light and night scenarios, but also in daylight scenes the colors are more vivid and the details crispier. From GoPro Hero 7 is totally recommend the upgrade
Thanks for the review. I am tempted to upgrade from 8 to 11. I had mixed feelings about the creator edition before watching the video. Now I know, I am not going to buy it. One thing that bothered me is the small SD Card. 32 GB is in my opinion useless. Same as the possible upgrade to 64 GB after adding it to the shopping cart. So, you buy sth that you can't really use. At least I am sometimes on the go where I can't empty the SD card any time. It's also disappointing that the GoPro (case) is a bit loose on the handle. I am quite confident I will upgrade this year but probably stick to the current set-up. Ulanzi case with a shotgun mic and maybe the GoPro handle. The extra battery inside of that does sound neat. The ulanzi case allows you to replace the battery while the GoPro is still in the case. It feels like a better deal to me. One thing I am really looking forward to is the 8:7 mode. Some scenes can't be shot twice, or take way more time. So, I have the hope it's a time saver that allows me to shoot for RU-vid videos and Instagram/Facebook stories/rheels at the same time - assuming it works as expected.
I use a 256GB micro SD card and for my use it's the perfect spot. I keep the 32GB that is shipped when you purchase the GoPro as a backup in case of failure or if the main one is full, to be used only in emergencies.
Thanks for sharing this and it seems that media mod is not setup carefully, and it seems that you need to media mod or the volta, not sure actually but i need to see that also. Thanks for sharing friend.
looking at the gopro 11 review it's really very beautiful when can i buy a camera like that a year ago i bought a gopro 5 black camera which was damaged by sea water while making a vlog because the on off button was broken I had to apply aquarium glue or silicone glue to cover the on button off as well as functioning as a button, hope you are always healthy, friends, waiting for the new video
I agree in this test the built-in mic is extremely better then the external one. I'm testing it in different scenarios and environments (see my latest video shot in the woods, even though it's in Italian you can still check the sound): it's a little better but still not great. I don't know if it's something that GoPro can fix via software update, if my hardware it's faulty or if it just sucks.. But as of now my recommendation is to use the built-in mic or a different external mic.
The internal mic is awesome, the media mod mic in this video was defective thus the very bad results. You can find in the description the link for a new video I made, testing a different (and working!) media mod: the results are much better!
Hi Leonardo. Your media mod mic did sound real bad. My media mod mic sounds better than the internal mics, but not as good as a plug in mic. My Hero 11 arrived today. It seems to be working just fine with and without the media mod. I also have the Volta battery grip. So far I like the Here 11 better than my Hero 10, although the 10 is no slouch. It's not a huge upgrade, but I wanted the new features on the 11, even though they are minor. 10 bit color is nice. The touch screen is more responsive on my 11. Anyway, great review. I liked and subbed.
Hi Bob! Thanks for your feedback and your support. I share your excitement for Hero 11, especially for dark and night videos it's a huge upgrade. It turned out that my Media Mod mic was defective: after returning it now it works as intended, although still with lesser quality than I would have expected. You can check out my new microphone review here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7dz8Rz2wvGM.html
Thanks for sharing this! Am thinking of getting one. Still not sure about the microphone though. I also heard that video editing doesn't work on Final Cut Pro? 🤔
I use Premiere, thus I can't answer for Final Cut. I have experienced issues with editing of timelapses, but a very simple change of media encoding solves all problems
I can definitely see them being useful in a few industry not just sports. These are useful for tech and vlogging as well and the volta gopro tripod battery grip last about 3 to 4 batteries worth. The stabilization is great.
Ciao Leonardo. Mi sembra che il microfono esterno suoni un po' scatoloso. In quali situazioni secondo te è migliore di quello interno? Ero indeciso se prendere la media mod e onestamente lo sono ancora. Grazie 🌝
Ciao Umberto, condivido i tuoi dubbi.
If you take off the battery cover for the media mod to fit, does it then loose its waterproofing? To have a waterproof camera is a very important part of me considering a GoPro, so losing that is a rather bad idea to me.
With the media mod it's only water resistant, thus it can be used under rain or few splashed of water, but if you need to record under water then you have to remove the media mod and close the battery slot.
@@leonardodoesmore Thanks. I'm not dipping the camera too often, but especially using a canoe there can be a risk of just that. Also, during prolonged rains water gets everywhere. And I'm used to from the Sony cameras that "weather resistant" can be so so. I don't like the overly wide angle of the GoPro either so I'm on the fence here.
I recommend checking out also the new microphone review I did, as it turned out that my Media Mod was defective 👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7dz8Rz2wvGM.html
Its nice tat you test the camera, but there other test where the quality is might be better. You maybe got wrong render settings on your editor program...
Thanks for the suggestion. I checked the original footage and the sound is as noisy and bad, thus no problems with rendering (btw, I used Adobe Premiere Pro 22). The media mod is plug&play thus I believe there can't be issues there as well. It could be that my media mod is defective.. 🤷♂️
You can't use the media mod with their new charging handle, so you either get shitty battery life or shitty audio. Why would you design a mod that isn't compatible with the other GoPro products?!
Can you advise me the right backpack for Gopro 11 Creator Edition? I do youtube vlogs. choose the best waterproof for me. Should I choose the best crossbody bag or backpack?
I don't have a specific backpack for my GoPro. I own an Ortovox backpack for hiking and a North Face backpack for traveling, both are waterproof and very comfortable in their use
There is something wrong with the media mod mic on the 11. I never had any issues in ~3 hrs of footage I captured recently. Example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Fbxa89nLSn4.html&ab_channel=aroubin - sounds just fine
Your video has definitely a clearer audio, although it's been taken in a much quieter environment. If you check out my latest video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GSkk5ymnyNE.html , it's in Italian but you can appreciate the audio nevertheless) shot in the mountains and it's similar to yours but still underwhelming in my opinion
The media mod used in this video was defective, you can check out my follow up video testing a new one in the description. It is indeed true that the built-in mic is really really good!
It is very nice looks cool please can you tell me how much did you buy which is you open the package which website did you buy? Could you send me the link please
It definitely reduces external and wind noises. I've seen great results using the built-in mic in the GoPro foam cover, you might want to check it out as well
I'm glad I could help you in the decision. I find video to be on point, with clear improvements in night scenes, whereas audio from the media mod is disappointing to say the least. However I am executing more tests and I believe I got a defective media mod, stay tuned for a new review video to be released in the next few days!

I got with some discounts thanks to buying a bundle and some accessories all together. You should have a look during these days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, there might be interesting discounts as well
You are right, but I found out it was most likely a defective product. You can check out my new audio review here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7dz8Rz2wvGM.html
why would you buy a camera which is relatively compact just to stick around it a bulky frame with a shitty microphone and some lame light? if you want professional stuff get a real camera, with a real microphone, gopro doesn't turn into something close to it with any mod, not in any way trying to harm your decision but the media mod exclude the camera from it's main purpose, being a compact and sturdy action cam, obviously gopro want you to buy their crappy add ons but it's just their marketing, and btw the build in microphones are very much alright, just my two cents, enjoy it.
That's a very interesting counterpoint, thanks for sharing. I really appreciate having the flexibility of carrying around only one camera and that, if needed, use some additional gear depending on the specific need. The Creator Mod and the Volta are nice for vlogging, long shots and timelapse, then whenever you need to go underwater/skiing/extreme conditions you just the GoPro itself and attach it somewhere else. I totally agree the built-in mic shines over the external one, I'm disappointed by it.

I have the Hero 5 Black series still works great! The 11 Hero Black for the 900 us dollars i spent......Very Disap pointed! yes video was little better but Not 900 worth better! I sent the Shit back! Plus the editing software....Omg Total Crap! I really dont no whats happened to GoPro over the years..... But think they need to fire thr whole company and Restart
My personal experience is not so harsh: I expected something more from the Hero 11 but at the same time in my opinion video quality has increased a lot, especially in low light and dark environments. I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience, keep up with the good work with the Hero 5!
Yes it does! Moreover, when you're recording with both battery in and Volta connected it uses Volva charge directly, saving your battery for when it's not connected
