@@dominikpiatek979 just a little that’s true. But GoPro have all blue or all green. No contrast to anything. And DJI much more easy to grade because it’s close to real colours.
Odd cuz I find gopro to be too yellow and green while over saturating both colors at the same time resulting in blown out highlights in those colors.@@dominikpiatek979
I recently got a Gopro to make photos and vídeos of my dives...but the overheating issue worrys me..cause It fog lenses.. i think Osmo haven't this problem
WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS???.........This is the 2nd video where I keep seeing the DJI Action 4 have completely smudged areas where the GoPro has details. For example. Pause the video at 3:10 and look at the ground especially as it gets further and further away. The Action 4 is almost just a solid grey smudge while the ground is clearly not just a solid grey smudge as the GoPro proves. The other video I saw of the same thing was the Action 4 being compared to "only" a Hero 9 and the same thing happened; with the DJI Action 4 a portion of the side of a man's face was almost just a solid skin-coloured smudge while the GoPro Hero 9 looked "normal" and captured the details properly. It's not a case of digital (ie. post-process) sharpening, the details are simply not being captured by the Action 4 AT ALL (also, the DJI was set to the sharpest mode just to be sure). It's like the Action 4 is in some insanely low bitrate mode or something - I don't know how else to explain it.
That could be shutter speed and motion blur. If the GoPro has to run with a higher shutter speed it will have more detail in movement, but this is not pleasing to the eye or cinematic. You could get that level of detail by turning up the shutter speed on the Action4, but more natural motion blur would be the goal.
@@theamateurguitarist6187 no, it is not the shutter speed, its software compression to fit 4k within camera's max bit rate. DJI chooses low contrast areas and removes details. Particularly noticeable on sequences with fast moving background. No matter the shutter speed low contrast objects closer to camera have some detail, but anything further away changes into mushy patches.
After I sold my GoPro 11 and waited for the 12 to see if it will have at least a 1 inch sensor but it didn’t. So I bought the action 4 and can’t believe how trash the GoPro is now. Never looking back
Im a kiteboarder and mostly using action cameras for shooting my kiting videos. Most important feature for me is horizon lock. Somehow DJI cameras resolution is very low in this mode (2.7K only) compare to 4K for Gopro. Very strange than none of the reviews mention it. It is important not only to kiteboarding but for many other board sports. So for me DJI not even the option to consider.
@@StrucaSE I'm mostly using it with kite line holder. In this case I actually taping myself, not surroundings. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O1VG206NVco.html - that's how it looks. I switched to the insta360 lately. Gives a freedom of POW but quality is not as crisp but still acceptable. @@papimt09 I'm actually making 1080 videos in post-production 4K give you the way to "zoom-in" without losing of the quality (for full HD). Just read my comment carefully. I'm using it while doing kiteboarding, means camera is attached to the lines and 8ft away from me. It is not like you can do closeup shoot while doing skating or something like that. So bro didn't called 2.7K very low. It just if you can choose one of two cameras which cost the same and one camera have significantly better resolution, why do you choose the other one, bro?
4:39 As someone already mentioned the 12 captured the concrete well, while Action 4 did not capture any detail. I assume that's unedited. But if you can't bring back the detail the action 4 looks usless int his scenerio.
I've been using Gopro two generations hero 6 & 10. My hero 10 was half dead and half alive after I used it one year. I just bought insta360 x3 and I will wait until DJI action 5 comes out to buy it. Thanks for the review. I am not regret to say goodbye to Gopro products. 😊
Straight standard out of the box DJI looks great and has more dynamic range organically, but when you switch to GoPro 12 HDR mode, that is where the GP12 hands down beats DJI A4. Both solid cameras and comes down to preference but I give slight edge to GP12.
I will switch to DJI in a heartbeat if they bring out a media mod equivalent with embedded external mic. I currently use a combination of media mod, the DJI Mic and a Sennheiser external mic, but the convenience of the media mod for a vlogger is invaluable.
@@bradleyolson1087 It didn't take me long to switch to the Action 4 (with the DJI Mic) after my last comment. 🙂 I've just got back from my first photography trip using the Action 4 so still need to do post editing, but my initial impression is really good. in 4k/30fps, standard.
@@BrownianMotionPicture Action 4 - I love it. For my use case, vlogging outdoors when hiking/landscape photography, it ticks all the boxes. However, I can't say it is better or worse than the GoPro 12 and I know that they both have pros and cons over each other. I upgraded from GoPro 10 which was inferior in many ways (low light quality and image stabilization were awful) and I just got tired of the fath of those finger mounts.
@@john_norris great to hear. After seeing how pleasing the image could be I've got one on the way to fill the gaps between getting my pana s5 out on trips. Did you get the mic 2 or original dji mic?
@@DonGivani He is very biased. I have never purchased either of the brands, but it is clear that GoPro's footage has more detail, which is not mentioned in the video. Also the higher resolution is not counted as pro for the GoPro. While the action 4's better color correction is mentioned. Compare ground at 4:39 or the sand detail at 3:29.
Your comparsion was very thorough and well represented. I bought a brand new Go Pro 8 Black 2 years ago. I only used the camera a handful of times. I went to turn it on from being stored in a closet and it wouldn't turn on. No damage to the camera itself. I'm going to make the switch for sure.
Just sent my action 4 osmo back, 30 mins before either battery runs out or camera overheats is no good for me! Not impressed for my first action cam...
I recently switched from a Hero 7 to an Action 4, and two things really stand out to me on the Action 4: The quick record button is way faster and works every single time (My Hero 7's sometimes would do nothing and require a reboot - missed many shots because of this) and the magnetic mounting system is FAR superior. I actually had two Hero 7's so I didn't have to switch mounts often because it took forever and was just simply inconvenient. With the Action 4 I only need one camera and I can switch it from a selfie stick to a tripod or suction cup in seconds. Never going back.
I’m going to wait until next year‘s releases before upgrading from my GoPro hero 11. In terms of the magnetic mount though, GoPro has the snap mount, which I am a huge fan of. Congrats on the 100k subscribers, great to see that progression over time.
I just got a dji action 4 but I think it’s defective, it doesn’t produce clear video, it has a lot of noise even in perfect lighting conditions 🙁 I’ve tried all the settings, nothing seems to work.
I do think the image quality is actually better on the GoPro, outdoors it seems to handle dynamic range, shadows, and skintones a lot better. But the DJI is more usable and reliable it seems... Ahh, i dunno.
I’m so confused now. I had action 4 for almost 2 weeks. I returned it because it would over heat after 10ish minutes. Maybe it was just a bad one but I have the GoPro 12 now and no Over heating 🤷♂️ I did like the user face or DJI tho. Felt easier and way more responsive
I had the DJI action 3 and water leaked in and broke it when i went snorkelling. I think either DJI has a quality control problem, or these YT videos are just hype
Gonna be honest the GoPro looks better to my eye in all your footage, particularly the colour. If it was about 30-40% cheaper I'd buy a Action 4 just to try it out. Haven't been that impressed by the Action 2.
Even DJI 3 won against last Gopro in my opinion. I decided that i will secrefice a little bit of quality but i wil gain recording time and less overheating. Now with next gen DJI, i wont even lose quality of recording, its absolutely perfect.
DJI Osmo action 4 is my pick, ease of use, quick charge time, no need to worry about having to go through all the settings to get the best possible results. Straight out of the box, after charging it up it just works.
@@hanoitripper1809 I can't speak for above-water experiences, but it never over-heated when I was using it for scuba diving. Probably because water functions as a giant heat sink, lol.
You mentioned the Action has GPS but I'm pretty sure it doesn't. Not my one anyway! They sell a separate GPS Bluetooth remote if you want GPS. I also think your GoPro is faulty because even my Hero 11 (with GPS) seems to outlast the battery and over heating on my Osmo Acrion 4. What nobody is talking about is data rates. My Hero 11 (basically same as Hero 12) gives me about 150mbps over about 90mbps on the DJI. I find that colours crush much easier on my DJI and attribute it to the data rates but maybe that's just me. I do prefer to user interface and frame rate options on the DJI though. It's both more simple and gives more shooting options at the same time
Just ordered mine as well, mostly because parts like the waterproof case weren’t available locally for the dji and I needed it for a trip.. I’m sure it’s great
Dji Action 4 I can actually use this when I video model railways shows, it just works so well. Colour and stabilisation are very good. Thanks for a great video…
DJI is taking over even on action camera segment. Impressive! If GoPRo doesn't wake up, it could mean the end of the line for them. Having a 1.1/9 sensor in 2023 is nothing but a joke.
Great comparison... one important note. Action 4 DOES NOT have GPS either. What Action 4 has is the ability to connect to a remote control with GPS sold separately that allows Action 4 to record the GPS data from the remote (not the camera, the remote... so it won't help if trying to record the speed of a drone etc.). There is no internal GPS in either the GoPro Hero 12 or Action 4.
I think the Action 4 is a better camera - more contrast in lower light - more color detail - and the grading comparison was night and day! - I wonder how long it would run on a USB powered source before overheating? does 1080 allow it to run cooler, or does it matter? will it run 2hrs stationary continuous I wonder?
How is the DJI better when it completely doesn't even capture what it's filming and instead just makes things look like a solid coloured blob? Look at the ground at 3:10 for example. It's just a grey solid smudge with the DJI. I saw another video of the Action 4 being compared to "just" a GoPro Hero 9 and the same thing was happening to a portion of the side of a man's face. It was just a flat, solid, skin-coloured smudge on the DJI Action 4 while the Hero 9 actually captured the face normally. It's got nothing to do with sharpness settings, the DJI is simply not capturing the details at all. It's like the DJI is set to some insanely low bitrate or something. I have no idea what's going on but NO ONE is talking about it.
Having both, I find each of them to excel in different situations. I think the GoPro does a much better job handling skin tones and creating an overall more cinematic image. The resolution is also helpful. In regard to the DJI, it's good, but the ecosystem isn't as diverse or wide as GoPro's current eco system. The addition of LOG profile, the ability to view on the app while recording, and the built in 1/4 on the bottom of the GoPro might not be the jump people wanted, but I do use every one of these features every single time I use my GP12. If you are already in the GP ecosystem, it's an easy upgrade, if you are new, DJI might be the better choice.
Totally agree. I have both and find myself reaching for the GP more often, primarily because of its superior (IMO) image quality. Both are very good, but if I could only keep one, I would keep the GP.
@@bigmikes901adventures I think the GoPro might be a little better in terms of stabilization, but the DJI is still very good IMO. I forget the channel name at the moment, but there’s a RU-vid guy from Norway who uses the DJI while riding his motorcycle and the footage looks great.
Enjoyed your video. I did a lot of research last Spring and pulled the trigger on the Action 3. I'm a hobbyist photographer and videographer and using the DJI along with my Sony Rx10 IV has brought a whole new dimension to my presentations. I couldn't be happier.
Can you horizon lock the Osmo Action 4 in 4k? Does the Osmo have time warp or night effect settings like star trails? How about the file sizes between the cameras?
As I live in the UK I have never had a gopro over heat lol. Once I have my presets I dont have to alter anything on the back screen if my gopro is mounted and the inclusion of the quarter inch thread means it now attachs to all my camera kit. I think the gopro looks sharper and the slow mo has always beat Dji (and yet ive owned both). Also the Gopro is cheaper and with my max lens mod 2 it is soooo useful. I like the Dji but IM still sticking with my Gopro for now.
Solid review, but why not have the Action 4 in the Low Light mode in the test? I've also seen videos w/ the Hero 12 in HDR mode in low light... the Action 4 is still better, but the Hero 12 is a lot closer.
Seems like a pretty bias review to me. At least a couple of points that detract from the Action 4 are omitted, like the front screen being unavailable in some configurations...
Have the hero 11 and got an action 4. Both are good but the action 4 audio is way better however I think GoPros menu is more clear and more information. For example I get conflicting information on action 4 are both color options 10bit or only d log? The way the menu has it I would assume only the d log which would then be a win for GoPro since you can have 10 bit in all color modes but then I hear others say both dji are 10 bit and even hear dji has hdr on all the time but then other say no only the 3 has hdr. Dji specs are not the clearest in terms of what are the actual settings. Functionally the camera is great and I’m liking it however the record button is much harder to press especially with any kind of glove on (we’ll see how it goes with a snow glove). I think go pro wins on better textile feel of buttons (something I’ve heard others complain on the action 3 and didn’t get fixed in the 4), GoPro wins on a more clear settings menu, GoPro wins stabilization having an auto boost feature. Dji wins on boot up and responsiveness, FOV, Audio, white balance and low light. On the FPS menu I kind of think it makes more sense to split them by region otherwise you may find yourself with an odd outcome if you don’t know the regions use, not everyone understands😊 what or why to use what FPS. I know I don’t so having it broken down as 30/60/120 eliminates me from messing up accidentally. Both great cameras but the low light in the woods, better FOV and better audio has me using the dji more.
Great review, watch the entire video..... I have a gopro 9 and i was thinking to upgrade to a gopro 12 or maybe an insta 360, but ive seen lots of good reviews about DJI action cameras, so i might get the Action 4 Adventure Combo!
Greetings to everyone. My friend is deciding between DJI and GoPro 12. I use the GP 10, where I love the function with the GoPro subscription, automatically backing up my videos and photos to the GoPro Cloud. For me, it's a feature that would make me choose GoPro for sure if DJI doesn't have it. I searched on Google if DJI has such a cloud, but I couldn't find any mention of it. Have you looked into this, or does DJI really not have this feature?
Hey Jason love your videos, got the Action 4 and never looking back. Would be awesome if you could do a comparison of using audio wireless solution on it like the DJI mic against the Sony ECM-W3 and the Rode Wireless Pro. Your unbiased opinion would set me to buy which ever you advise 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Actually thinking about maybe going back to a Gopro. Have the 'Osmo Action 4' and its pretty good but the background is blurry in the corners on mine although the face is in focus. Also have the new 'Insta Ace Pro' and my face is not in focus but the background is pin sharp. Think it is all to do with the new larger sensor size that those two cameras use and the issue with the optics. It can either be aligned to get your face sharp or background sharp, also a bit like the issue that 'Insta' had with the 1" sensor camera as well where face wasn't in focus unless you held camera over a metre away. At least with GoPro and the smaller sensor the optics seems to have everything sharp. Some people are not really fussed but for myself when vlogging out in the wilds I want everything to be sharp and show my environment clearly. Have a fix for the Osmo in Davinci Resolve where I put a rectangular mask on the outside area of footage to sharpen that up separately. Have done that as well with the Ace Pro where I have a tracked oval mask to sharpen just face.
Action 4 is tempting for several reasons. But in the underwater shots it looks too magenta and contrasty compared to the GoPro. 5K is useful for cropping/zooming in post/editing or getting screen grabs that can be printed at a good resolution
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema thanks for the info. I've only played around in Davinci an hour or so and watched one video on LUTs, not anything but a dabbler at this point.
@@Hat_Uncle the GoPro seem to have more details in the shadows. Less contrast, so probably closer to the way it was. It seems the Action 4 over corrects the green cyan cast that can happen underwater. The dark part of the rocks looks very dark, which would be fine as a final look, but maybe it makes it hard to correct when editing
EXACTLY. No one is talking about this. It's like the DJI Action 4 is in some insanely low bitrate mode or something. At 3:10, the ground with the Action 4 is just a huge, solid grey smudge blob while the GoPro shows the ground much better. I saw another video of a guy comparing the DJI Action 4 to "just" a GP hero 9 and it was the same thing. There were parts of the side of a man's face that were just a solid skin-coloured smudge with the Action 4 yet, with "just" a Hero 9, the "information" on the side of the man's face was actually captured properly (ie. showing all the details). It has nothing to do with sharpening settings, it's like the Action 4 isn't capturing the information AT ALL (sharpening has nothing to do with it.
I live in New Zealand and own the GoPro 12. Extremely happy with it till I went for a trip to Fiji with it at the peak of summer. Alas it overheated multiple times in the Fiji heat (around 32 Deg C - could have been higher or even slightly lower). I was extremely upset with missed opportunities to capture really precious occasions where family & friends met up after many years. Extremely lucky I had the Lumix G9, granted not an action camera didn't miss a beat recording 4K for extended periods and in even hotter conditions. But of course the G9 is obviously quite bulky in comparison. Back in Auckland NZ the Gopro is mostly working fine but it did overheat in Rotorua whilst shooting 4K (once again in fairly warm ambient temperatures. I still like the convenience it offers in terms of physical size and portability. Would have been nice if the battery life was slightly longer but not a deal breaker. I'm not upgrading to anything else until i either sell off the Gopro 12 or it fails completely. If and when that happens I might give the Dji a go. Thanks for the comparison.
Insta360 has the best low-light capabilities. I own the GoPro Hero 10 and it does a great job but it will shut down when you least expect it. I am constantly having to check my video before moving on to film something else. So I think that I will either switch to Insta or DJI but not until GoPro Hero 13 comes out and I see some major changes.
What about using the cellphone with the Bluetooth to change the settings on the GoPro? It’s a thing and comes easy when using it for MotoVlog. What do you think?
I have ZERO experience with any camera or any type... I do think about buying one as I ride a little mauntainbike. My only input on this is that i think the picture and color looks better on the GoPro when there is good lighting. (the other way around when its dark/bad light) But what is best on a MTB when you often ride in a place with lots of trees and its bright sun, dark shadow, bright sun dark shadow, shifting many times often within seconds?
I don't know what it is about GoPro but they have never addressed reliability and heating problems. These have been around through several iterations. GoPro 9 was probably the worst action camera ever made. Images on all GoPros are great but the ease of use and reliability of the devices is terrible. The physical design is ridiculous and the added media mod just made things worse. The GoPro is great at recording action but there is nothing 'action' about using the camera.
Here is the reality. In the mid to late 70's, My uncle and father were pioneers in the in car camera scene out in SoCal. If you saw what was required for that(Camera, batteries, beta machine etc. roughly 90lbs......ALL IN THE CAR) You would realize that neither of these companies are the winner......WE are the winners!🤙😎🤙
I've had GoPros from version 5 to 7, of which the 5th was their last reliable. Thanks for sharing your experiences with both brands! I now made my decision and ordered the DJI Osmo Action 4. Have a great day. Carl
Thank you for your question! Yes, it works perfectly. I also got an aluminium Smallrig case to mount some accessories on it. I'm still waiting for the microphone, but I have the Godox R1 for lighting. The battery on the Action Four also lasts well for the recordings, and I have not yet needed an extra battery. I only shoot with manual settings.@@JohnBooysen-s8v
I own a GoPro Hero 5 and Hero 8. Guess which one stopped working? I'm switching DJI soon, it's coming an Action 3, as it's more affordable and suits my needs.
Thank you for your comment. I have owned three versions after the fifth, all proving unreliable. Now I look forward, and DJI's products have been reliable.@@SamXDesc
If the Hero 13 will beat the DJI Action 4 i would go for the Hero 13, Only because i have all the accessories from GoPro. I had the Hero 9 and it was good but died last week in Croatia underwater.. The DJI here hast better lightning.
So, I've had a GoPro since the 6th, and this week I bought the hero 12 at BestBuy, I put it to film in 5K, and in 20 minutes it heated up and turned off, really the GoPro has been a disappointment in recent years, the touch on the screen as Sometimes it doesn't respond, and now it overheats after 20 minutes on a 5k, I've already ordered my DJI Osmo 4 and I'm very happy with everything it delivers, especially being able to have two screens that work with touch, this helps a lot when vlogging
Who is everybody that said it was going to have a 1 inch sensor? The guy by the package store drinking out of cup sitting on the curb. These are action cameras not camcorders. Use as intended. Heck half the people watching this don't have computer or the knowledge to shoot in LOG and color grade the footage.
I'm just getting in to creating content and so far have just been using my iPhone 14. I'm in the market for an action cam to get some better footage and like many other people, GoPro is all I have ever really heard of. This was super helpful and has sent me on a journey to do some more research to find the best camera for MY needs. Thanks Jason!
I am using GoPro 11 mini but now I am going upgrade to the model with screen so can you please suggest me which one should I buy GoPro hero 12 or Dji Action 4
I'm going for the new DJI Action 5 coming out in a few weeks. I can't believe the GoPro 13 has the same smaller 1/1.9" sensor vs. DJI's larger 1/1.3". GoPro probably kept it smaller because of the risk of overheating issues.
the GoPro menu is a joke. trying to configure the shooting on dusty roads with full sunlight is a nightmare ...and 3-4 times I pressed timelapse by mistake because the menu is too small and not responsive.
I recently got the OA4, after my old GoPRo7 died on an epic waterslide. Thanks for the analysis - I think you hit the use case scenario well. Like anything, it's how you use it. For me that means helmet mounts on motorbikes, cycles, snowboards, family outings. In these scenarios, the magnetic mount and front face touch screen I thought would be a big help - and yes, it's been great, also being a little smaller is good, and that low light sensor ability is great at dawn and dusk, so for me, the OA4 has been the right purchase so far. Not really any disrespect to the GP12 - still a good camera, and if you swap orientation of footage a lot, especially in post, that might well be enough to justify that camera choice. Sad to see the GPS go on the GP12 - I never did the overlays but it was nice to know where the picture or video was taken.
And what about with HDR on, on those scenarios presented? I understand that is where the 12 shines 🤔 only seen that comparison with one reviewer, everyone else seem to not compare the DJI with the 12's HDR 🤔
I appreciate your perspective, and I understand that many action camera enthusiasts have already made their choices. While the timing might not align with everyone, I hope the comparison can still be of value to those who are seeking information or looking to make informed decisions. Boredom is a matter of personal perspective. I invest time in traveling to different locations to create videos that aim to be both as informative and as engaging as possible, tailored to individual subjective preferences.
It so funny. Every video is different. The GoPro looks better in colours and sharpness. But the Action4 has better Lowlighti think. But let me tell you somethung on the coloursensor. The Coloursensor allows you better colours, but i think that the GoPro has a more stabilize picture, which will be more important as you will pass by different light and shadow environment
Professionals ALWAYS, always... film with shitty settings on the cam to make cam work hard to get a decent picture. Then, in post, the film comes to shine. You live, you learn... ;)
Honestly, I have to go DJI just because of how much more pronounced the fisheye effect is on the GoPro. In the side-by-side walking through the house, walls and doorways are bowed and weird on the GoPro, while the DJI has relatively straight lines. It makes the scene feel more realistic and the movement is less dizzying.
Have you installed the lastest firmware? A new one came recently. It improved linear mode on lensmod. Not sur eif it improved regular linear mode, but worth a try.
I only read that the action 4 does not have a star trail photography option. This is on the gopro 11 very nice. I also have used the night time lapse to catch northern lights on the 11. But my 11 is less than 10 months old, so I will stick with using it and not upgrade now already. ;)
Thanks for the great review. It's strange-every comparison I've watched prefers the Action 4, but despite the usability difference (HUGE, I know), the GoPro visually has better dynamic range. Not crushing blacks, you can see into the shadows, minimal over-exposure. Color science seems to be more appealing (even if the LOG isn't as flat). I don't think low-light performance should be a deciding point for an action camera... I really like the Action 4, but I went ahead and ordered the GoPro 12 because the output is what matters to me most. Thanks for another great video, Jason!
The GP takes the edge on specific dynamic range scenarios, not all. The output doesn’t not matter the most if you are fumbling/fiddling to get the shot. -Magnetic mount -presets & QS button -fast charging When your using the camera on the go (travel/action sports) those things make a huge difference
