Are the any (major) downsides to the H4S vs the H3+B? and secondly are there any recording settings that are available in one but not the other? I should mention I currently have the Hero 3 + black.
New Photo options is one of the big advantages in the Hero4. Protune as well in photo mode. I'd also argue the focus could be a big advantage but that's more personal choice. Other then that most of the visual differences and audio are covered here.
Hey Mark, I wanna thank you for your nice comparisons. it really helps me to decide which GoPro to buy. i've been watching many of them and now im pretty sure im gonna spent the money for the Hero4Silver. i think it will be worth it's money. you really deserve more subscribers for your fantastic work!. :) thanks!
Hey Mark, nice comparison! i think i buy the hero 4 silver for the next season. in view all your videos and my conculsion is the hero 4 is a little bit better than the 4 black. whats your conclusion? :) best regards from germany!
I think the Quality of the Hero4 Black is best but areas like low light worry me with it's inability to degrain the footage as well as the Silver. Even in matching settings the Silver down do a better job producing a more appealing picture. I also love the LCD screen a lot more then I had originally thought. While I think the quality of the Hero4 Black is the best out there, the Hero4 Silver is the one I enjoying using more. just wish it had 1440p at 60fps.
Hey dude, this comparison is really awesome, really good work, like they said, gopro should have it in his webpage :). I have a doubt; in the last pictures the gopro hero 4 Silver has a description with PROTUNE ON GOPRO COLOR, and the Gopro Hero3+ does not have that description, why?, the hero3+ black cant have protune for photos or what?. Hope you can answer me.
Dude only 6k subs?!? You deserve way more! I subbed cause the quality of this vid and the time you put in to help us out is awesome! I have a question, would you suggest upgrading from my 3 black to the 4 silver? The night lapse setting just blows me away! I currently have a hero 2, and 3 black
First off thanks man, means a lot to me. Tell all your friends especially any that are famous athlete's on twitter ;) The second part is tough. I think the Hero4 Silver is a fantastic camera. It's OLED screen makes shooting pretty fun and doesn't take a noticeable hit on the battery. The image is notably sharper over the Hero3+ Black minis 3-4 feet or closer. Everything beyond that is fantastic. The new photo options are great and changing settings at night is easier and faster with the screen. The one big downside for me is the $100 price increase along with completely new batteries. If that part doesn't sway you, I'd say go for it. It's a great camera and one I assume will have a nice resell value comes GoPro Hero4+ or 5.
Your comparisons are amazing. I would love to see one involving the Replay XD Prime X. I'm trying to decide between that and a GoPro hero 4 and possibly a Sony action cam :)
Mark, i have to ask you something again :D i still wanna buy a Action Cam for skiing but i dont know which two of them what you mean Hero4 Silver or Hero3+ Black? I use them also for a little photography and some other sports liek paragliding which one you prefer you said at the end that the Hero4 Silver is better but is it really better???
After doing some filming with it last weekend, the Hero4 Silver looks fantastic. It's depth of field and sharpness all around is great. The way it handles contrast over the Hero3+ is fantastic. Is it $100-$150 better? For me it is but honestly this video is a good reputation of what to expect. I'd say go with your gut.
+MarkHawkCam Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think I've caught you red handed. I can see at the beginning of the video when you showed the supposed "3+ Black Edition" packaging how you added the "+". Is this footage we're seeing really of the 3+ or the 3.
+ChinaLake100 just using the B-roll I had for the intro, nothing evil. You are seeing Hero3+ Black footage in this video vs Hero4 Silver footage. You'll have to trust me or come over and check out my archive of content. That being said, you can check out my video history to see all the cameras I've used or follow me on Instagram to see pictures of the rigs I use. (instagram.com/MarkHawkCam)
+ZombieCrusher I'll say the Hero3+ Black is better for extreme close up but if you have the money, I love shooting with the Hero4 Silver. The added photo options and LCD screen make it a blast :D
Is there any way to get the silver to look more like the 3+ in underwater conditions? Yea I know you said the silver is more natural but the 3+ just looks beautiful. Also, you said that the 4 silver has a flat lense? does this mean that there is less distortion in underwater filming? Does the housing have anything to do with distortion effects?
Steven Craig They both have flat lens's but the Hero3+ will be better at super upclose focus while the Hero4 will be better at mid to a distance. You can use GoPro Studio 2.0. (free) to adjust the colors in post. They have a lot of presets and its fairly easy to apply it to a batch of shots and export it out.
Awesome videos Mark! Spent a couple hours going through some. Not that impressed with the Hero 4 over the 3's…audio sounded noticeably better but other specs and image quality weren't anything to get excited over...
To be honest, I'm still not convinced the Go-Pro Hero 4 camera quality is going to be worth spending $400+ and be THAT much better then my iPhone 6 camera. What camera do you use when displaying the items you are doing the unboxing etc.? Looking for a small a somewhat compact camera but with better great quality to upload gym videos etc to youtube without that iPhone quality look. Thanks!
I use the Canon5D Mark II but you might be interested in something like a Canon T3i. I use to love the Canon 60D but I know there is a newer version. Not sure if the newer one is the 70D but it could be. There is also the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 which I've been debating buying if you really want to drop some serious money on cameras/glass. I did buy a mount to test the iPhone6 against the Hero4 Black/Silver. I do wish the prices remained the same as they had last year. Hard to not panic every time I drop one of these now knowing it'll cost me almost the price of what I paid for my phone.
I have a Hero3 white and was looking to upgrade to a newer camera which one do you think is better for hiking, lacrosse, biking and swimming? thank you
Do you think it is worth paying the extra money for a Hero 4 silver or do you think I should stick with the Hero 3? And I really appreciate you responding!
S reilly that's a question you should be asking yourself. Is the extra cost worth a better performing camera for your person needs. He can't do everything for you
Should I sell my GoPro Hero 3+ Black and get the GoPro Hero 5? I know it's hard to determine since the Hero 5 hasn't released yet. But what do y'all think?
what do you mean by the silver 4 cant take RAW photos near the end of the video? Im looking to get one and take photos so is it a bad thing?? thank you :)
+Jedd Turcotte It's still compressed but no LUT/Color Grade is applied. It's better then the 4 though and quality is pretty good. Just isn't a RAW DNG file is all. It'a a un-lutted JPG.
Congrats on taking the time and effort to put together an intelligent comparative video. Admittedly, I'm one of those "gotta have the newest version of my favourite toy, even if I have last years model that works perfectly fine!" kind of people! Now, if we can get you to swim without pinching your nose.......;-)
Francesco Trudu Each camera can be better depending on the activity. AS200 can often be sharper and have a better color grade but the lens distortion can lack of resolution options can be an issue. Hero3+ great for up close objects and offers a really clean image but is poor with low light and things at a distance can appear soft. All depends on what you plan on doing with your cameras that can be a big help in recommending which's image is better for what you need.
Nah, the OLED screen doesn't really have a noticeable impact in the field. The battery life being hit by the processor for higher frame rates or resolutions hits the battery much harder. However the auto power saving mode on both when the camera is not in use can last 4-7 hours depending on the settings and usage on and off.
+Less Than Productions It's the same as a digital zoom. You're just scaling up the center portion of the frame causing. There is a offical term for it that escapes me but you are simply degrading the footage in doing so.
+MarkHawkCam ahh ok that is a perfect way to put it. Makes complete sense now thinking of it that way. So I'm assuming shooting "medium" would be the same, but not as bad?
sir, may i know, the difference between hero 3+ be and hero 4 silver is, hero 4 have lcd at back, and more clear pic. it just little different right? have any different? 😀
+areef faisal Focal difference is a little longer on the Hero4 (Better at mid to far) while the Hero3+ is good at close to mid. Hero4 offers lots of photo options including shutter speed control and more ISO options. Hero4 also has a better UI system and new battery design. Also some new timelapse features that take the shutter control into consideration.
Thanks for the good video. I do mtb and need some battery life more than that of what go pro offers. So, I am not sure if hero4 sliver goes with tehkron cage pro or not. Could you help me out. Thank you.
I don't see why not. Also Butron has a extended battery coming out for the Hero4. You can also charge while recording so with a long enough USB cord you can have a battery backup charging it while riding. Either way there are a lot of Battery options out there for the Hero4 and a lot more on the horizon.
I need some help. Besides the lcd screen and protune for photos, I really like the Hero 3+ Black. I am trying to sell my GoPro Hero+ and pay the difference for the Hero 4 silver, but I may not be able to sell it(eBay). In this case, I want to get the Hero 3+ Black, but with the Hero 5 coming out in October, this might not be the best idea. What should I do if I can't sell my other camera???
I'd personally hold out for the H5 when ever it releases. I have a suspicion it'll be a worth upgrade. Been awhile since the H4 hit the market and competition has only gotten bigger.
MarkHawkCam OK. I just purchased a Garmin Virb basic from Amazon for $105. I already have a Gopro 4 Silver. So I'll get to do my own tests and comparison. I'm only interested in putting them on a pole and shooting under water when I go bass fishing. I'm not so sure I want to put that $400 Gopro under water that much.
MarkHawkCam I bought the basic (non GPS) version. I found it for only $105 on amazon. Someone online said Garmin is discontinuing their basic version. So I grabbed that one before they were gone. I figured $105 is a good price. I have no need for all of the stuff that comes with the Elite - GPS, wi-fi, etc... The optics and sound are supposed to be the same. What attracted me to it is the fact the Virb is waterproof (some what) without a case. I figure with a case it will be great to put underwater and if the waterproof case fails, there might be a good chance the Virb will not be damaged since it is already waterproof. I've really not seen any bad reviews of the Virb. Some so-so reviews but no bad reviews.
Hey Mark! No, I understand that, but not everyone has the time to watch all your great videos that you've been making. Sometimes you it's good to watch the conclusion first and then if needed you can watch the whole video.
Thanks for the comparison!! It's cool you take the time to film all of this to help out. I might go for the 4 silver now! Would you mind checking out my vids and leave some feedback?
No worries, thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. I'll check some of yours out later this week. Sounds like a cop out but it's late. I'll follow up. Bug me here if I don't.
