me! I'm looking for travel drone and despite loving all high tech inside mavic direct purpose of this drone will be to take shots of my travels. And gopro here is much more advanced than dji: gopro been in cameras business much longer hence more knowledge how to make good cameras + most importantly for travel they give the choice of 5 fovs while mavic has just one narrow fov which is pritty much useless when trying to capture beautiful panoramic views. Equally as important is the fact that mavic is just a drone, while gopro is full solution for all kind of shots, 80-90% of which happens on the ground or in water. Gopro for the same price gives solution for all of it, not just for 10-20%
GoPro has no flat colour curve like D-log. so colour grading is far worse. I travel with a phantom 4 and a Sony A7r2 at the moment and colour grade everything, Also the FOV change on action cam is basically a digital zoom. you may as well leave it wide and crop in post. Unless you get a mechanical element in a lens there's no fov change getting the same quality. The stabilizer is a great option I'd agree, being used to the DJI software saving my drone in many scenarios (See a recent vid i posted) when you use these a lot you have experiences where you could easily lose it.
"color grade is everything" said who? I don't make movies for Holywood, and doubt they would accept such funny thing as mavic anyway. For everyone else, including biggest sports channels, gopros and their colours ARE good enough. As they are good enough for most of best professional sportsmen, who used, use and will use Gopros because of their versatility. And it definitely will be good enough for me and my friends with whom I want to share the best moments of my trips, coz they as 99.9% of viewers care about how interesting are the views, not how precisely someone colorgraded their material
Darius M it is one option to get more footage mate, not blown out or under exposed, this is a huge issue with water, snow and shadowed mountain scapes. Aerial footage is different than closei n footage and it's that where you'll notice the bent horizon distorted lens the most. GoPro will add a flat colour profile, they are already adding colour tweaking in the studio software, Also they'll probably advertised better fish-eye correction(than what's already in the studio). All i'm saying for an extra what $400 you could have the gorpo for usual, a 3rd party gimbal with a lot more than an hours battery and the smallest 5th gen drone with a camera lens designed for shooting aerial.
Brian, I very well understand the reasons why some, or probably a lot of people WILL buy mavic. And thats great. But the question by some narrow minded person was why someone would buy Karma. And as one of many whose needs will be better served by Karma I tried to explain that. I currently fly phantom with gopro and the main reason I never updated to phantom 3 or 4 was their limitation of fov. So mavic with even smaller fov is absolutely unsuitable for MY needs, even if it would bring the quality of red epic. Different products satisfy the needs of different people. I understand it well, the problem is that some dji's fanatics have way too narrow fov of the World to understand that too.
I so wanted to get the Karma in the worst way but in the long run, I ordered the Mavic Pro. hope i didn't make a decision that I'll regret in the long run. This will be my first drone :)
Great video very useful. I think it conforms that GoPro remain well behind DJI is all aspects. The fact that you had so many issues does not bode well... I wouldn't touch one at present....
good review. didnt hear about the issues mentioned here with other people's reviews. Other youtubers make it sound like the Karma is perfect out of the box.
GoPro has a lot to answer for with the Mavic, i guarantee GoPro engineers went back to the design dept to design the Karma2 with many design cues from the Mavic they can without breaking any patents
I was excited about the Karma whe it announced. Then came the Mavic one week later and my excitement for the Karma turned into disappointment. I'd just simply keep my Gopro Hero 4 Black with my Lanparte D3 gimbal, sell my DJI P3 Pro and get the Mavic Pro.
Some questions and some thoughts: Did you see any jello in any of your footage - I didn't see any in what you selected to post? Can you turn off the front lights like you can with the Phantom 3 for night filming? What is appealing to me is: the props will never show in your captures: larger motors than the DJI Mavic mounts (thinking smaller motors will fail more easily); abundant spare parts. Would like to know what the maximum height above take off is, and is that 2.4Ghz for video and 5.8Ghz for control? Another thing, obstacle avoidance may not be all it's cracked up (pun) to be, nor are flight times all they're purported to be - Karma's 20 minutes may be close to Mavic's 27 minutes. I'll bet GoPro includes a follow-me mode by Oct 23.
Its actually hard to pick which one to buy karma or mavic. Mavic is the superior drone which i like so much but the good thing about karma is not the drone it is its versatility in one package. Note: i still dont have a gymbal and 1st time drone flyer. And those 2 things are what i really need gymbal and a drone thats why karma is still a contender for me against mavic. But im still leaning for mavic because of all the features it have that karma dont have even if im just a first time flyer
Do you know what harness comes with the karma. I noticed that gopro sells the harness for the hero 4 and hero 5. Is there and option on which harness when you buy the drone? or do i have to buy another separate harness to use my hero4.
We haven't confirmed this, but we suspect that the Wide FOV because of the distortion makes the footage have exaggerated wobble. We experienced this a bit with the 3DR Solo and the HERO4 Black. We will test this fully when the KARMA is here for review. Best!
Looks pretty bad. Even EIS will create distortion when dealing with higher frequency drone wobbles. This shows poor PIDs on the UAV systems, and issues with vibration in physical design.
Nice video. You really see the distortion of gopro lens with those scenic shots. I guess thats what makes people think they are going fast like a hero with the extra wide fov. :)
Maybe they'll bring out a camera for more scenic filming in 4k. I used to film with a Sports drone and a 4k sony action cam strapped to it and this was a similar problem i had. I was doing a lot of anti-fish eye correction in post,.
So what happen with the "No Video" ? was there video on the screen in flight? was there a record button showing " recording" ? , it would be disappointing to fly and "Think" that you captured great footage , only to be disappointed when downloading to computer that there is no video??.
Everything looked to be recording and when returning to view the footage, all we had was the audio from the flight. GoPro says that the units we were flying were pre-production and that production models do not have this problem.
Mavic blows Karma out of water with stability(very important and basic for a drone), longer battery life, more than double the range, more compact size, lots of smart modes...there is just no competition.
I’M PUTTING MY MONEY ON DJI PRODUCT!!! I KNOW WHAT I’LL BE GETTING PLUS DJI HAS A CARE CENTER IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG WITH THERE EQUIPMENT….. I FEEL IT’S TOO EARLY TO SPEEN THAT MUCH MONEY ON THE KARMA WHEN GOPRO IS NEW TO THE DRONE BUSINESS.
Last time I checked, the Mavic pro doesn't come with a detachable gimbal (nor camera) that attaches to an "included" hand held stabiliser. They are two different audiences for these drones, Karma is for an all round jack of all trades solution with the drone, handheld gimbal, and removable action camera that can be used in many other ways on its own. the Mavik just does 1 thing good, Ariel footage, thats it. Put the price of the mavic pro with the separate dji osmos, then compare price.
