How to use your GoPro camera to film SCUBA footage can be tricky. Using a red filter and proper camera settings makes your edit and color correction much easier. Adobe Premiere CC is featured in this tutorial however you can follow along with any software that allows you to adjust RGB curves. Filming smooth footage will prevent you from having to use stabilization effects which not only takes time but many times will distort your video clip. These quick tips are the most common things people ask me about when they see how my SCUBA videos have evolved over time. If you have any more questions or comments then let us know in the comments below.

Thank you very much! I know time is limited for everyone these days so I just want to get the info out there and get you back to doing what you love! If you can help others see the video by sharing on social media that would be a huge help. This way I can get an idea of what else other people want covered and I will do more videos just as quick and thorough! I really appreciate your comment! That's what motivates me to make more videos! By the way, huge announcement coming up for the channel - very soon! Major hints on my Instagram account ;) Have a good day! Thanks again!

Thank you! You're totally right! It's taken me a long time to get the quality video I have today. I still have plenty of improvements I can make. But if I can help speed up someone else's learning curve that would be cool too! I just try to learn at least 1 new technique during each project I make. Thanks again!

concise and substantive. Other videos on RU-vid will drag out much longer while providing less content. Thanks for the great advice! Would love to know more about your settings other than fps when shooting underwater. Protune on with flat color and native white balance seems like the best for editing in post.

Thank you very much! I try to keep my tutorials short and to the point so you can get back to doing your thing! I have a lot of Race Car videos (using GoPro's) and tutorials coming very soon! You're right about pro-tune; however, I don't use it for SCUBA because it generates a ton of heat (worry about fogging) and eats up batteries and memory like crazy! Being that I get good footage with regular settings and I'm only filming for fun it's good enough for me. If you can deal with the hassle Pro-tune comes with then I'm sure you'd get better quality footage!

Thanks for this tutorial, it's made really good, but I think you missed a few things you should have talked about on the start. The first is the use of PROTUNE. Do you use it? Second is the recommended size recording, 1080, etc. Thank you for a reply. Chris
@HazardSports
@HazardSports 8 лет назад
Chris, I didn't cover ProTune because it is more universal than just SCUBA. I planned on doing a ProTune specific video. But being that you asked I only use ProTune for short planned shots for specific segments; but, never for SCUBA. It eats a ton of data, crushes your battery quick and generates a lot more heat as a result! All three of those things make me worry that I may miss something epic! For that reason I'm committed to 1080/60 for SCUBA. Great quality, ability to play half speed - yet not too intense on the battery/data/heat(fogging lens). Thats just my preference but others may be better at planning how to manage these issues better than me. When I SCUBA I am in vacation mode and I prefer to relax and not worry too much about my camera gear.
@Enorme81
@Enorme81 8 лет назад
+HazardSports thank you for the fast reply. I understand your point of view but mine is always to get the most quality videos for my gear, so I think protune is the way you should use if you want the best. With stuff filmed in protune you can then change everything you want in post production, but for sure it takes more time to work on the videos and, as you said, there are all the other "bad" points on using it. I personally always film in Protune, as said, just to be sure I filmed as the best I could, and then I can do what I want:-)

+Chris Sepu & +HazardSports - great points from both of you. I think a lot of folks are not aware of ‘Protone’ and for that reason it deserves a mention along with a demo of the benefits and short-comings. HazardSports - really great job here, so much better than the other stuff I see on youtube!

Great video buddy, but where is the link to the grading video that you promise at the end, I can;t find it on your channel?
@HazardSports
@HazardSports 7 лет назад
+Abdul Aleem Shekhani Thank you. Unfortunately I haven't uploaded one yet. I most likely will next month depending on what I film next. Usually I wait to get footage that needs a bit of enhancement so I can show how easy it is to fix it. Lately my camera settings have been pretty good and the footage doesn't need much adjustment. But, I will keep it in mind if I get a clip that is a bit off.

Oh boy...this may be too technical for me! lol
@HazardSports
@HazardSports 9 лет назад
The basic Color Correction is not that bad once you play with it. But the main thing I wanted you to see is the most effective way to use the collapsible pole! People think that you can't get steady footage with it but you really can! It's very versatile. But, it takes a light touch and a steady hand for those few seconds you're framing the shot. I'm sure you can handle that ;)
@SharShar059
@SharShar059 9 лет назад
I'll try...lol
@HazardSports
@HazardSports 9 лет назад
You'll do great I'm sure! Just don't be obsessed about recording EVERYTHING! Just film what you like best and you will be proud of the video!

Fundamentally disagree with the suggestion to use a red filter - by definition, you're bringing less light to the sensor. Works in bright environments like the tropics but for those of us in darker temperate waters, we want as much light as possible to just make it to the sensor, and reduce the graininess... Same technique still works in post-production, so why even bother with the filter.
@HazardSports
@HazardSports 7 лет назад
+Tim McClure The footage I have without a red filter is totally blue and green. Comparing that to the beautiful colors I could get with the red filter was enough to make up my mind! Seems to be enough light and to me cuts down on post production yielding better results! I know each person has their preferences and their own work flow so I understand and appreciate your purist approach to capturing the video!
@TimMcClure
@TimMcClure 7 лет назад
Certainly works in the tropics, I'm just saying it's a non-starter for those of us who can't afford to get on a plane to warm water.
@HazardSports
@HazardSports 7 лет назад
+Tim McClure Where do you do most of your diving?
@TimMcClure
@TimMcClure 7 лет назад
Started in the Salish Sea (Howe Sound/Strait of Georgia/Puget Sound), now I'm on the North Coast (Humboldt Cty) in California... Puget Sound we were stoked for 20+ vis, here we're stoked to see our fins and making road trips for 10+. I need to bring as much light as I can with me (for close-up macro), and likewise capture as much as I can back at the sensor, otherwise it's grainy green trash. Of course, its probably time for me to upgrade the Hero2...back to that part about affording a plane to the tropics....
@HazardSports
@HazardSports 7 лет назад
+Tim McClure I went diving in Georgia once. It was more like a navigation dive because visibility was around 4'. Was after a storm but based on my schedule was the only time I could go. I actually had the Hero2 on that dive also. The video was sharp but again not much to see.
