Him not carrying his own snowboard already told me he shouldn't be doing shit. Second hint was when he went alone. Then was the hesitation as to where to go, he didn't scout out where he was going or if there was any practical path through.
I plan to upload my GoPro footage of me making a cup of tea, in which I nearly leave the teabag in too long. At the last minute I managed to save the tea.
@@thmc6499 only safe if you know the terrain. This Is clearly sidecountry outside of some ski area in France, but that doesn't mean you don't take rescue gear and atleast another person.
Made all the wrong moves, took all the wrong lines, way out of his depth, on a hire board that couldn't hold an edge. he's lacking skill, mountain awareness, the conditions are blown out and cruddy AND it's nearly nightfall - not the best time to get in trouble or even be off piste......this is an educational video on not what to do...muppet...hope he's alright though....still, muppet.
I saw that and was like oh boy here it comes. Although if he made that fall strapped it probably would’ve gone a lot worse. Idk if he could have unfucked the situation
Theres usually never a place where its gonna be safer to try to go down on your feet than on skis or a board. In boots you're basically just letting the snow decide where you go and have 0 control. Trust me. I know from experience.
This was painful to watch, going over those rocks over and over... Always scout your line before you drop in, especially in terrain like this. Everyone out there be safe! This guy is extremely lucky
Lol “before you drop in” the only thing this guy has ever dropped in was the toilet, get this muppet off the mountain and bring him back to a green run! Faaaaack🤮
There was nothing but ice! The avalanche had clearly already happened. This was just the dumbest choices I’ve probably ever seen. Conditions like that are not only not fun, but absolutely miserable. Conditions like this is when you go get drunk at the bar and don’t even put your skis/board on that day or go somewhere where the wind hasn’t blown every flake off powder away. The only lucky part is that because of that wind, he luckily landed in probably 2 feet of powder. Just dumb. You’re correct about trying to start an avalanche with what he was doing and he damn sure would have if the conditions were there for him to trigger one. But bro was literally ice skating down a mountain in a snowboard
This is a very important video. It shows you what can happen if you think you can do what other professional boarders and skiers do, when you can't. His first clue should have been the snow blown conditions resulting in thin to non-existent powder and lots of ice.
agreed so many other signs he missed or didn't even know to look for i been snowboarding for 30 years and a mountain guide for 10 years he is lucky to be alive plus where his airbag and mountain gear for self rescue and if your not a good boarder why he not with some one like me that would know the area what safe routes to take and whats the snow pack like it make me sick to watch
Dude. I have snowboarded once in my life. I was butt scraping down a mountain just like this guy (except there were no cliffs and it was a clear hiking trail when the snow is gone). But when this guy first got on his board and you could hear his board grinding against the hard ice pack snow I was thinking that there is no way he should be trying to ride down this. Just turn back.
+Greg McLean heh, maybe, maybe not : ) If you fail to check the conditions, to know the terrain and map, to prepare your skills, to go with partner... I dont believe you can change to a wise planner. My advice for him is either to switch for playstation or to buy good insurance.
Some people grow up. I've done some pretty stupid shit while younger and thankfully nothing serious has ever happened. Now wouldn't even consider going out in the backcountry without checking Avy Reports, having a knowledgeable partner (makes it easy when it's the wife), and at a minimum having a shovel, beacon, and probe.
Matt Wiszynski i'm 19 and even i know that. This is basic common sense. People forget that mountains aren't just a pretty view. If you don't respect them for the threat they can pose to you, you're almost certainly a goner. Guy was lucky, but also a complete moron
The gradient was too steep and icy for snowboard boots to have any grip. Did not look like he's a guy carrying climbing/ice gear for his boots either or he would have wore them going up.
I worked in a rental shop for 10 years and that is the Burton Progression LTR board. "LTR" stands for Learn To Ride. Straight rental bindings but people do own these. Most likely this board was rented that day. That gave me a chuckle as long as this lad is alive and well...physically.
wow.. ok rental board.. rental bindings.. and why would you take off your board and start walking on the ice sheet? so many things wrong. jerry of the day
I don't understand why everyone is punishing him for these mistakes....... we should be thanking him for posting a video full of calm beautiful mountain scenery, with the climax of him falling off the cliff at the end. somebody's got to entertain us.
Maybe if you are going to do a skill sport . Then you need to show respect that you are a beginner and should remain in the boundries of abilities. Those are winter snow covered mountains. Every ski school I evey joined would not allow a beginner to the top of a big mountain. They are slippery things in winter. They are not punishing him. But some real advice is what he needs. It is not his fault he is only a beginner. But tragically it would be his fault if he died. A mountain may have gentle slopes as well as lethal areas. Off piste has a far greater potential for entry in to the danger zone. Off piste at lower levels is one thing. But in the high mountains it is away from resort security and may have been considered too dangerous to be open for most. So you are on your own. So you need the expertise for the level of terrain. The more experienced can see he is out of his depth. In one resort I observe tonights expected temperature is about minus 25 Celsius. Enough to freeze a novice or experienced person half solid before morning. So inexperienced skiiers skiing over an edge in to a valley can take them in to uninhabited Valleys in dangerous conditions. By the time you realize you are in the wrong valley you may have a 10 hour climb to climb out. If you lack basic mountain skills it could be spring before they find the frozen remains. So they do the novice a kindness by telling him he is a f'ing idiot to be trying to ride the back of a great white shark. The wildeness is not holywood. Where the film editor says: Take two.
The dude had no idea what he was doing. People need to respect the fact that part of doing anything is being a beginner and having to know what you can and can’t do safely. He made a bad decision that he is 100% responsible for and if he can’t see what he’s done wrong and posts it to RU-vid, then criticism is going to come.
He did not have the experience to go there, you don't EVER sit down on your ass if you lose your edge. Stance was narrow, too much toe, those edges weren't newly done, ALONE! I felt scary just watching you begin since it didn't even looked like u had a plan. Glad you're ok tho, you were lucky!
What are you supposed to do if you lose your edge? Also could you like define what losing your edge is, i've only been snowboarding once. For me whenever I would fall or feel out of control I would turn heelside and fall backwards to sit down basically how you're saying NOT to do.
Peracetic if you lose your edge you want to get back up and put weight back on your snowboard as fast as you can because if your sitting on your ass there is no pressure on your edge meaning you have no control so if youre ever in a hairy spot and you lose your edge you get back up and try to regain control
@@declanmercer2587 not to mention if you cant get an edge, you sure as hell arent going to grip with your boot. Taking his board off there without an ice axe or crampons was asking to slip.
I know nothing about snowboarding or skiing. The whole time I was asking myself, "this seems strange, does he know what he is doing?" I see from the comments, he did not.
I'm a pretty seasoned snowboarded and everything was indeed strange. Even the bootpack up our dude was out of his element. Honestly I wouldn't have gone up that without an ice axe in hand to self-arrest.
but who buys those, useless and ugly. and also that board is like 20 years old. if u want to buy that kind of burton board used it costs $20. u cant buy those new. my burton process flying v costs about $700 board and my bindings are $250
Just asking for something bad to happen, people are morons. He spent the whole ride trying to figure out which path was less likely to kill him, sounds like fun to me.
I thought to my self “ this fall isn’t what I thought it was.” Then Immediately after the thought heard him screen and fall off the cliff. Great fall. Glad you alive dude
That's a selfish thing to say, saying you're glad he did fall for Wasting 12mins of your life? Yes they could have skipped to the fall but that was a very cruel thing to say
Its not a cruel think to say, look how stupid this person is :D obviously would have trouble to ride a snwoboard on the piste and he goes off all alone obviously doesnt have any clue about the path and cannot even find one when he's there at least. He can only be greatful that there wasnt enough snow for avalanches, because if there was the conditions and his riding would be just perfect for triggering one.
@@nikolassmithers4870 It's a rental snowboard and is not the right equipment for riding off piste. Especially at that grade. He very clearly inexperienced and should not have been there to begin with.
@@nikolassmithers4870 I'm assuming the plastic is to protect the nose and tail from damage. It's basically useless but it's on pretty much all rental boards for some reason. Most beginner snowboard are very flexible (which helps those who are learning) but are not good for steep, icy terrain like the run he was on.
@@luimanushci2309 true. just saying that the line was seriously ferocious! I’ve conquered some shit on a board but that looks dubious. time to find a way out!
@@ryanst.pierre6700 when I was 10 or so I had a batmobile sled and fell off a cliff much like this w,ithout the rocks. My tailbone hurt for like a good 3 weeks after that. Stupid me thinking it was fresh snow so if I fell off a 10 ft cliff it wouldn't be so bad. I saw it coming and pulled my batmobile brakes on max. Robin bailed. I went flying. How I survived my childhood is beyond me.
100% if he just stayed in the middle valley, and didn't traverse over to the right as far as he did. They're simply wouldn't have been a clip for him to fall off of. Worst case he just slides on his ass over some rocks.
I am utterly terrified of snowy mountains. I immediately get a panic response in my brain just watching these videos. So much vast space, extreme heights, nothing to hold onto, just snow.
The comment section is either hating or making youtube recommendation jokes. I genuiently feel sorry for this guy posting this video. I hope he can get over the hate.
Nope just popped on my feed and I’m so glad it did hahah I feel for this guy but damn unreal I can’t believe those people let this guy go and didn’t even bother to go with him like where the fawk is this
easy to say he's stupid but its an honest mistake that can happen to anyone without experience of the mountains (taking a lift and skiing through them quickly doesn't count). Now whis to blame? Nobody but himself because everyone knows that skiing off piste carries even greater risk than normal skiing on runs. From the perspective of a mountaineer that terrian looks like some nice climbing (maybe even boring in some of the powdery seracs), but the thought of being on that icy rocky ledge without at least a piolet or set of crampons on hand is what nightmare's are made of if you've ever had the unpleasant experience of hopelessly slipping on ice toward danger.
Gabriel S. Who in their right mind hikes to the peak to do some unmarked terrain riding on rental boards. His looks to be rental from the sticker at the front and bumper guards but his friend in front is on a Button LTR board which is definitely a rental. It just makes no sense. Peer pressure can get you into those situations though but it was still his decision and when you look at how he is riding even from the beginning it's obvious he shouldn't be there. I'm sure on the way up it says unmarked terrain and had at least a black diamond but most likely was double black.
Thanks for posting the video. I think it's brave to post a video which discloses so much wrong doing, which resulted in the accident. It is therefore useless to bitch about how stupid this guy is. More interesting is to ask what caused the accident (taking off the board on an icy sloap) and why it happened. Everyone who watches the video can learn a lot from it. And although it is long it is quite interesting to see how he moved himself from minute to minute into a life threatening situation. So surely worth the time to watch and to think about the cause.
For non french speaking people, he says at 12:14 "Guys, I am shiting my pants now" just before getting off his board. Then at 13:18 after the fall "Guys [mumble I could not understand] I am still alive"
Everybody in the comments is talking about his reckless behavior, and I will too. Just something a bit different. As a hiker who has summited a few quite sketchy mountains and glaciers, I could tell just by the way he was climbing up the mountain something would go wrong. Even if it looks like there are good footholds from the person in front of you, always make sure they are deep and strong, unlike him. Also, on the scramble where there was no line, he should trying MUCH harder to get better holds. All around reckless, and thank you for your time.
Bro didn’t even have a line. You can tell they are NOT LOCAL, and just decided to go out of bounds and see where we end up. You can tell by what he was doing he has no idea where that line was taking him and yet he just kept going.
so many mistakes. NEVER venture off by your self on a mountain you are unfamiliar with, there are no tracks over there for a reason. how did he just pop right up from that???
OK, let me explain the video. This dude goes to a rental shop and rents a board, for mountain boarding. Then with no plan as to what route he is going to take he goes on a nice icy part of the mountain. He takes off his board because he doesn't know how to board and moves one foot and plummets I'd say 100ft on rock and lands in some snow.
Glad I’m not the only one who was frustrated at the lack of a planned out route. No one followed him, no walkies from what I could tell, and the constant hesitation made it obvious there was no original route planned. Glad this dude made it out alive at the end of the day but this video was rough
Guys why do you make jokes and say what he should've done he made a really big mistake going that way but it was obviously an accident when he fell down I mean like nobody would fall down a cliff for no reason unless they've made the decision to and besides this guy was obviously hurt didn't you see his bloody lip I feel really bad for the guy and you guys should too instead of making fun of him
That was nerve racking to watch. I'm do mountaineering in Canada and I've personally seen an incident similar to this happen a few hundred meters below me in similar conditions resulting in a helicopter rescue. If you are in steep, hard packed, icy conditions off trail you better know wtf you're doing, and don't go alone.
This is my nightmare in this video right here. First time on a mountain no idea where to go, no one else in sight and icy. The guy in the video knew he was in trouble though and also says that he has no idea how to make it back to the station. Hard not to panic. At least the wind didn't pick up and it was sunny. That could've made things a lot worse.
