Such a great song from 1970! The lyrics were based on Gordon Lightfoot's divorce. I loved his music & had many of his albums. One of the best songwriters & storytellers. He was a Canadian legend. Some of his hits were "Early Morning Rain", "Steel Rail Blues", "Ribbon Of Darkness", "Sundown", "Carefree Highway", "Rainy Day People", "Cotton Jenny", "Black Day In July", "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" etc.

I figured you would remember when you listened to him again. A beautifully written and sung song , his singing will truly be missed. His next big hit to consider reacting to is SUNDOWN. Great job and you have a blessed day.

The line, “heroes often fail”, always gives me goosebumps.

Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian institution, one of the great poet/songwriters. His favourite instrument was the 12 string.

I grew up in Oklahoma in the 60's/70's. I had heard some of Gordon Lightfoot 's songs but for some reason wasn't that fond of it. In '76 I married a Canadian and moved to Canada. It was IMPOSSIBLE to live there and not become a die-hard fan of Gordon Lightfoot! His music has been a huge part of my life, and even now many of his songs manipulate my emotions EVERY TIME I hear them. I enjoy watching your reaction videos and I look forward to seeing more.

On the Fitzgerald reaction, I think I said that I couldn’t remember anything else from Gordon Lightfoot, but I went looking and knew several immediately. He was so great at writing haunting lyrics and music! Thanks for sharing your insights on the lyrics, Cole.

This was one of Gord’s most personal songs, about the breakup of his first marriage. Later on if you react to his “ Sundown “ , Sundown isn’t the girl but it’s about the girl who was largely responsible for his marriage breakup. Bob Dylan called Gordon one of his favourite songwriters. He has an almost never ending rabbit hole to explore. He has been covered by the likes of Johnny Cash, Elvis, Glen Campbell, Barbra Streisand, Bob Dylan and on and on. R.I.P. dear Gordon🇨🇦🇨🇦

It's been a long time since I've heard this gem, such a poignant song by such a perfect voice for it. The pensive Gordon was the best ever, thanks for the video and commentary

The folk music and musicians of the sixties evolved into just the sort of songwriting you are hearing from Gordon Lightfoot of the seventies. He was not on my list of folk muses in the sixties, but came along just as life was pulling me away from active participation. This was my favorite of his songs, It still resonates. Thank you for reminding us that song lyrics are, after all, poetry.

OMG Cole, haven't heard this song since forever! The Wreck is just a stunning song and I loved it but I honestly adore this one. It's hard not to love it with such great story telling involved. Perhaps the message of the song is that he is a prisoner of a love that she can't see he has for her. Just a guess on my part. Whether it's a movie or a book, he's a romantic is an unrequited love. Regardless it's a bit sad. Love lost and sometimes that's just the way it goes.

"I HAVE heard this song!" I have uttered those words too, Cole. .. after realizing the song I had heard for years was "Dreamboat Annie" by Heart...... and not an Anne Murray song! 😀 I probably could have made the connection if I had listened to the lyrics.

Hiya Cole - really enjoyed your reaction to this one. I'm guessing you'll find you recognize most of his hits since they were all radio staples - back in the day on AOR and today on classic rock stations. I loved your clarification that songwriting is poetry set to music! "Sundown" is without a doubt my favorite song of his, which is saying something because I've not heard a song of his that I didn't like! I hope you decide to listen to more. 🙂❤ -Cat

I discovered Gordo while in college in the mid 1970s and just about wore the grooves through on the Gord's Gold double LP. I actually love better the songs that weren't the big radio hits. Try his Song for a Winter's Night for a true beauty, and Minstrel of the Dawn, and Don Quixote, and ... yeah, just listen to the whole album!
