Cool story. RIP Gordy. I'm a very big Elvis fan and a very big Lightfoot fan. The renditions of Early Morning Rain that Gordy mentions Elvis doing for his Aloha From Hawaii show were amazing. They (along with other songs) were done live on stage without an audience and sewn in into the show as excerpts/interludes along with the actual live concert. There are many RU-vid videos of him doing the takes of this song. Elvis' treatment of the song is so beautiful, delicate, heartfelt and sublime.
I Loved Gordon Lightfoot! Absolutely a GOAT! So was Elvis! That’s what I miss as much as anything,. The chance of seeing/hearing Elvis calibrate with All the Other Great’s!
Gordon is completely off on his time references. He didn’t play Buffalo until 1972. He only played two shows post army and those were in Honolulu and Memphis.
Elvis only played two live shows in 1961 about a YEAR after he got out of the Army. One in Memphis, one in Hawaii. He did not return to live performances until 1969 and returned to touring in 1970. Elvis recorded Early Morning Rain and That's What You Get For Lovin' Me in 1971. Elvis played a few Canadian dates in 1957. So, Lightfoot is conflating 3 different times. He must have developed dementia by the time this monolog was recorded.
