Gordon Lightfoot, (born November 17, 1938, Orillia, Ontario, Canada-died May 1, 2023, Toronto, Ontario, Canada), Canadian singer and songwriter who was known for his folk-oriented pop singles of the 1960s and ’70s. While Lightfoot enjoyed international acclaim, he was especially revered in Canada, where he was considered one of the country’s leading musicians.
Lightfoot began performing at a young age, and while a teenager he joined the first of several musical groups. In the early 1960s he found success as a songwriter. His works-typically poetic takes on topics ranging from the personal to current events-began to be covered by various artists, and this list eventually included Barbra Streisand, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and the Grateful Dead, among others. In 1966 Lightfoot released his first solo album, Lightfoot! That and subsequent recordings made him famous in his home country, and he became known as “Canada’s Bard.”
Lightfoot gained an even higher profile with “If You Could Read My Mind” (1970), which was a major hit in the United States. His other popular songs included “Early Morning Rain” (1966), “Ribbon of Darkness” (1965), “Sundown” (1974), and “Rainy Day People” (1975). Perhaps Lightfoot’s best-known song was “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” (1976), about the sinking of a Great Lakes freighter. He continued to perform and record into the early 21st century.
Lightfoot was a lifelong fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and was made an honorary captain of the team for the 1991-92 season.[80]
In mid-April 2023, Lightfoot's declining health caused him to cancel the remainder of his 2023 tour. Lightfoot died of natural causes at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto on May 1, 2023, at the age of 84.
On May 7th, a public visitation was held at St. Paul's United Church that drew more than 2,400 people. As in Detroit, the church bells at St. Paul's rang 30 times, 29 to honor the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald and once for Lightfoot.
On May 8, 2023, a private funeral was held for Lightfoot at St. Paul's United Church, before he was buried next to his parents at St. Andrew's and St. James' Cemetery.

As a young kid in the mid 1970’s, you couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing a Gordon Lightfoot song. What an amazing talent! Thanks for posting!

Yes, he was on the radio a lot. I would say to my Mom “ I think I will listen to Gordon Lightfoot “and I would turn the radio on. Nearly every time, I turned that dial, lo and behold, I would hear him singing. My Mom thought I must’ve been psychic. I would just smile and wink. He had so much airplay, that no wonder I was right so often. Lol. He was such an influential part of my growing up. How blessed I am to have seen him in concert many times. Rest in peace, sweet Gordon. 🙏 Thank you for all the joy you brought me. ❤️🇨🇦

Thanks for this upload, Scott. One song Lightfoot disavowed was "Black Day in July," about the race riots in Detroit, it's a great song but one he didn't want to perform anymore. Elvis Presley was a fan of Canadian music, covered Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray and apparently a fan of the group, BTO. Scott, I hope you will add the "Dionne Quintuplets" on your "to do list" for future videos, the two remaining sisters turn 90 in May, 2024 and your sensitivity is needed to tell their story.

I think I'm going to plan a trip out here next year. His music just touched and still touches my soul. Thank you for doing this video with your friends Brian and Kevin. I've been waiting for this one Scott!!! Fantastic job! I was born in 1970 and growing up my father was a Gordon Lightfoot super fan!!! That said my dad would also build miniature log cabins and sell them in craft shops all along the east coast. (we're from east Tennessee) anyway just a few years before my father's death he went to see Gord in concert and actually got to meet him! They became friends and my dad built him a cabin and sent it to him. I remember Gordon actually would call the house from time to time. Anyway that's my connection to Gordon. I never met him myself but I'm greatful he was such an awesome human and was kind to my father! Rest in peace both Gordon and Pop

Thank you Scott for another awesome video. I was a young kid when I first heard Gordon Lightfoot's song "If you could read my mind" and I have not heard it since but I always remembered some of the words of the song. So years later I looked it up online some of the lyrics from the song and I was so surprised that I found it and played it and it brought back so many memories of my early youth. It even made me misty eyed because my great grand-monther passed away around the time I first hear that song. It was such a soothing and relaxing song to listen to even at that early age I was very moved by his song. I am so glad I finally put a name and face to this wonderful masterpiece. Thanks again Scott for sharing.
