The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Gordon s interpretation of the song is magnificent and serves as reminder of why I don’t turn the television on anymore.

Until a couple of weeks ago I was oblivious to Carousel, and after listening to some recordings, then watching the movie, and not knowing who Gordon MacRae was, I have to say I had made the presumption that his vocals had been overdubbed. Being proved wrong can be a lot of fun. This is classy TV.

Gordon Macrae was a fantastic singer. Like many Richard Rodgers sings this is an extremely difficult song to pitch. Gordon’s intonation was spot on. He must never be forgotten.

My Broc Bill passed away last night. He was as tall and strong as a tree to his birth family and to his own children. A philosopher and gentle soul. This song always reminded me of brother Bill who was protective and gentle with his own daughter.

Gordon Mac Rae had a beautiful voice here, and acted through a variety of emotions during the song, even emphasizing certain words and showing slightly different expressions from those he displayed in the 1956 film, which was of course a bravado performance. “Soliloquy”was filmed at Zuma Beach in Malibu rather than New England due to temperamental weather conditions, and the rest of “Carousel” was filmed in Boothbay Harbor and other Maine locales as well as Fox soundstages. Mac Rae is about 46 yrs old here, giving full justice to the role, just as John Raitt (who originated the role in 1945) would sound equally effective at age 48 in a 1965 stage revival. There are so many clues in the song to the character’s ambivalence regarding his impending fatherhood, and ironically Rodgers wrote the music swiftly but added the second passage when Hammerstein reminded him that the baby could actually be a girl! This was and is today still considered one of the greatest examples of extended musical comedy arias which show a character’s full range, emotionally and vocally. 🎠🎪

what a tragedy when Sinatra backed out of this role ....all one need do is listen to him sing this song as he did routinely in his concerts to understand the screechy screaming of gordon is enough to drive musical lovers into a deep depression...

He's projecting his voice. Sinatra would never had been heard in the back rows of a theater.

That's a little unfair. I think Sinatra did a wonderful job with this song. His version on "The Concert Sinatra" is a great track. And he wouldn't have needed to project anyway for a movie. Sinatra did several musical films quite successfully. He would probably have been very good in the role. But I also quite like Gordon MacRae's performance! @@JohnnyAngel8

@PeteThePrick : Different style of singing. MacRae had a wonderful voice but he wasn't subtle, which is perfect for the stage and for the way he played the roles in the movies. But Sinatra was more intimate.
