Yes china has been consistent. And that consistency is violating international law specifically the UNCLOS law which china signed to conform voluntarily on Dec. 10, 1982. Salute to Sen, Gordon on his clever and dexterous views. I share his perspective that if the U.S. bases were here, china would think twice in constructing those artificial islands. For me it was a misplaced sense of patriotism for our leaders during that time when the senate decided not to renew the U.S. bases in our country. Since the U.S. bases that still exist in Germany, Italy, Turkey, Japan, Kuwait, Britain, South Korea….etc. did not diminish their patriotism in any way. A false sense of pride on our part that we have to overcome.

I admire Senator Gordon. I admire him being a man of action and just being positive. He might have disappointed me at some point but I truly understand him because he is very goal-oriented and that is something a leader must have.

I agree with Senator's Gordon's analysis that china would not have dared to encroach in the WPS if the Americans didn't leave. Some Americans think that we drove them out but in actuallity it was the volcano eruption that made them decide to leave amidst the ongoing negotiation. The negotiation was tight, the cold war was over, US economy was not at its best and the eruption caused a lot of damage to the bases that it would cost the US tons of $ if they rebuilt those bases. In fact, they were cutting down during those times that they eventually closed the naval base in Long Beach, CA. So, in my humble opinion, we lost the Americans by their own doing. It was sad, but I'm glad they've decided to come back. It's not too late. There's still a lot that can be done with US and Philippine partnership. And with Japan willing to help out, the situation looks brighter. It's time the Philippines enlarge our own armed forces as well.
