As an asian, I can fully understand why Akira just nodded and kept quiet when Gordon was scolding him, it was a way to show respect. In most asian countries, nodding back when being scolded, especially if the one scolding you is an elderly, is a sign of respect. He kept his composure, he looked like he had a lot to say but he didn't.

The wife scolding him saying "is he doing enough?" at the sushi bar, while doing literally nothing herself except eyeball him. Christ, no wonder he got so ground down until Gordon came in.

Akira is one of the only non toxic restaurant owners I've seen in this whole series.

The man is depressed... burnt out. What he needed was emotional support and a big, big vacation, far away from the restaurant.

When Akira and Hana hugged I bawled. That little girl had so much love for her dad and could see him suffering. She is too precious for this world.

This episode was actually pretty damn heartbreaking for once the owner isn't a ignorant moron who thinks his food is amazing he just needed a kick in the right direction props to his kids raised so well

I could tell that Akira has a very Japanese culture. When Gordon was telling him the mistakes he made he’s just looking down and listening and not saying anything he almost looks like a normal salary man getting told off by their boss

The simple fact that Gordon used Akira's sons pictures on the wall means so much.

This was the most emotional episode of kitchen nightmares that I've seen

I can actually understand why akira just nodded his head and listened to gordon's scolding without saying anything back. In most asian households we're taught to nod, accept and agree with them since childhood, the silence is to show respect to the elders, talking back or even giving opinions is often seen as rude.

Akira = Sincere + Talented + Humble = Deserves all the help he got from Gordon and all other good things in life.

Akira’s face seeing those Traulsen refrigerators is just priceless! The pure joy on that man’s face!

The mood in the kitchen when Akira was cooking again was actually great for once. No shouting everyone saying please and thank you… I’ll work there anytime of the day

For anyone curious; unfortunately, Sushi Ko is now closed. They closed on the 8th of August, 2009. A year or so before the episode even got to air. Lisa says the relaunch may have come a bit too late and the business was already going under. Sammy's blog had a rather large statement on it but some key points are how the areas economy may have something to do with it and how the entire family went from incredibly excited to devastated as the closure happened mere months after the episode was wrapped. His wife says he's weak, i think he's strong. Who can actually listen and own up to their mistakes.

I didn't expect to get so emotional during an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. Akira is a wonderful, genuine man. Watching him light up when he heard about the fridges was so sweet. I really wish him and his children the best!

Akira is a perfect example of a Japanese man, polite, kind, down to earth, humble, golden hearted...

Akira is a good man. He was depressed and needs his family's support.

Akira is so humble and kind... He takes criticism in a good way... He deserves whatever good things will happen to him in the future and these is the kind of person who deserves to be help... He is down to earth

How is Gordon a therapist, chef, and a critique, and never ceases to amaze me

Akira didn't said a word in early minutes but his eyes tell so much.

Gordon is not only a Chef, he's a family counselor as well

BEST EPISODE! I cried, I smiled, I laughed, without having a tension caused by an arogant owner/chef. Akira is an awesome man, he's like, finding treasure, smiled ear to ear, when having the counters & fridges. I love this family.

Let's be real. The wife was 100% the problem. While it's important to acknowledge that she absolutely had to struggle for 4 years on her own, it's also clear that she does not take criticism well. She also believes herself to be corrected all the time.

This is probably the only episode when the owner is deserved to be in the kitchen

The biggest problem is his wife. Not that she doesn't support him, she destroyed him mentally. See how Akira has changed back to his old self, he got his passion back, energized, motivated, corrected his little mistake, he smiled and happy but then Lisa just sitting there, waited her chance for him to make a mistake and blame him. See how she said she think he doesn't work hard enough and "worried" about he is not gonna ever be the chef that he should be? that is a legit toxic and strong negative thought which can cause him to demotivated and feel bad. Akira didn't blame her anything or angry at her at all as he truly loved his family. A true gentleman he is. Lastly, his children's are beautiful and kind hearted.

The look of pure joy on Akira's face when he heard about the fridges, I can't, like it was truly pure happiness, so whole some to watch 🤗

UPDATE: Akira and Lisa were said to be looking for another location with a lower rent. Instead, Sushi-Ko closes in 2010 and Akira left the restaurant business behind, now working as an importer. You welcome ❤

I feel like Akira's wife is roasting him more than Gordon himself. Its sad honestly.

Akira: *Works his arse off* Lisa: "I don't think he's working hard enough." Akira: *Makes a single mistake* Lisa: "Now's my time to shine!"

Once Akira got his mojo back and started running his kitchen you can tell straight away he's an experienced professional chef. Lovely family. I hope Lisa continues showing her husband some warmth. A man needs to know his woman is behind him.

Its amazing how basic communication can help a family & business thrive. That daughter & Son have great morals.

Can we just talk about Akira’s posture? Look at how straight that back is. Goddamn.

It's people like Akira who deserve a second chance at success.

The scene at home where the son, then daughter, then wife speak to Akira's soul, then his admitting to his responsibility in causing their suffering is VERY touching. Beautiful to see. Redemption can be powerful and real, and it takes getting to the bottom of the truth to do it. Thank God for Gordon in bringing truth, spine, empathy and hard work to turn the chapter into new beginnings in failing restaurants.

how they displayed the sons art is unreal so sweet

Bless Akira's soul, that guy is authentic & caring. Probably why the kids are so loyal as well. But his wife is very fake and condescending

I found it dumb that Akira's wife is like 'its so sad hes lost his voice now' - ofc he's lost his voice u dont even give him 1 breath where he can intervene and say his opinion! She's constantly talking all over him and he's too polite to say anything! How are people like this it's so damaging to someone's self esteem T.T

I think every father will dream to have children like that! Such supportive and responsible kids!

A japanese person must be in a dark place thinking sushi pizza is a good idea.

Generally, Japanese are very reserved people. They would rather keep their emotions inside than to act it out which is the opposite of Americans. That is why Akira is not speaking up and it is very stressful to watch him go through this.

Wow at 29:42 what a class act guy. Just wow. I got no words. He's got soo much respect. Like he's easily the best chef on this show. His attitude and his food are fantastic. What a fantastic guy. I've got soo much respect for him it's unreal. He deserves success. Him and his family. I really really don't like his wife but his kids and him deserve all the success. Akira I salute you!!!

I've watched and rewatched almost every episode of Kitchen Nightmares. Love love love this show.... I've actually gotten teary eyed watching certain episodes and hearing certain people's stories. But this one really touched me. Ended up crying with the family. You can just tell the father was truly lost, truly had given up and carried alot of feelings of guilt and feeling like a failure. He takes himself away from his family because he truly is embarrassed. The change in him was sooooo beautiful to watch, his smile is lovely and its like it never went away after that talk and all of chefs gifts and the renovation etc etc. You can tell he's a very bubbly, kind, goofy ,sweet soul. Uhhhh when he was behind the sushi bar it was like he was at home. Absolutely loved it. I sincerely hope the restaurant is still doing well til this day Bless them all, and Ramsay as always 🙏🏾 ❤️

Akira seems like a broken man with a good heart. He just needs uplifting and supportive people around him. His wife seems to constantly bash him and bring him down

He married the wrong woman..... Its clear she doesn't love him anymore.. Look at the kids expression when their dad is in stress or problem and then look at his wife.... Yes. Exactly.

I love Akira, he’s actually such a good chef and it was sad to See how broken he’d become but it was so nice to see his passion come back

This episode hit hard, everyone was really nice/down to earth and genuinely tried unlike 90% of the other eps. Wish them all the best

I feel like Akira is one of us Asian kids who always get scolded at so we just kept our mouth shut.

Why is no one talking about his kids. They are such lovely souls. Not like any of the brats pretending to own a restaurant or leaving their parents behind during their hard times. Them doing the best role as a son & daughter👏👏👏

This was such a good episode, Akira really was just so broken down. And even when Gordon was scolding him he wasn't even fighting back. You can tell how much the daughter just loves her dad, she misses his happiness and just wants him to be okay. Honestly I think the wife was the problem! During the relaunch when she said "I still don't think he's working very hard" dude WTF?? She wanted a successful business owner as her husband, even if he was miserable, not a happy chef. Gordon should add family therapist/counselor to his resume for real. I just hope his family continued to support him after Gordon left, and the wife cleaned up her act.

best episode ive seen. The man didnt just save the resturant. He saved the entire family from going apart

I genuinely felt worried for Akira's daughter... She couldn't talk without tears, single time... I hope she felt better ...

I feel so satisfied when Gordon " scolded " Akira's wife like that for real , she doesn't literally realize her attitude till somebody points it out to her

When he shouted the name of the fridges, thats when you know he stayed up looking at that exact fridge when his broke 💔

I love that Gordon has proven himself in so many cultures food, in just kitchen nightmares alone. He’s gone after Italian, Greek, Mexican, Japanese, Southern/Soul, Arabian, and that’s off the top of my head.

No one is really talking about the kids, but i just wanna say they’re absolutely amazing and so supportive. I wish them the absolute best wherever they are

It almost feels like the wife was trying to mirror Gordon, in a desperate attempt to be noticed or liked by him. Everything from mercilessly going at Akira (which doesn't work when you're in the same hole as him, as well as having no prior achievements to show for yourself.) to spitting out the broccoli or that embarrassing dance she did at the beginning. I just felt bad for Akira throughout the whole episode. Hope he's doing good now.

The scene at the end was lovely. Really felt him there. Akita is such a great man. And even a greater chef. I'm seriously impressed. Kudos for this amazing guy!

This show always slaps when eating while watching

One of the best episodes ever made. The owners and their kids seem so lovely, i was really sad to see them crying and struggling..

Japanese "Kouha"man do not talk much and express himself, that was one of virtue. He must have been seriously stressed and upset that he did not do well. Financially supported and feeling love from his family, regaining confidence, I am sure he will be really successful there!

Bruh the wife has some nerve saying "hes not working hard" when she just standing there complaining. Its like she wants him to fail

Can’t deny the fact that Gordon is more of a therapist in this episode

I really want to hug Akira he's got such a warm, caring and down to earth personality. He's such a cool guy!!!

Her saying is she thinks he’s not working very hard when he is putting himself out there. Making sure his customers are happy despite probably feeling like shit is absolutely horrible

The fact that Lisa was getting excited and smiling when Gordon was criticizing Akira was hideous

Protect Akira at all costs Its agonising to watch how his wife is treating him.. The verbal abuse in front of Gordon Ramsey was so uncalled for

I'm not joking when i say i was emotional the entire video! Seeing how broken the father is broke me! He has the talent but his light was dimmed! Great seeing him and his family happy and successful!

When Akira said “Traulsen?!” It melted my heart 🥹😭

It seems like Akira just wanted to rest and retire, but his wife forced him and put more pressure to him which cause this new restaurant failing

Despite chef Ramsey’s harsh criticism towards Akira, unlike other chefs, I like how Akira was so polite, he was listening and accepting the criticism without taking it to heart but is also keen to change for the better, props to him! ☺️

Akita immediately getting excited and asking “Traulsen? Traulsen??” He had big plans for the restaurant at some point but gave up. Top end appliances are something he dreamed of

When I saw Akira speechless, it was devastating from inside. A man who lived so happily aeons back, was shattered totally. Chef Gordon Ramsay, is not only a Counsellor for kitchens but for the family too. He's not aware that he's a Doctor himself!

You can tell that this guy literally died inside because of the wife, also she let her kids believe that their father was a lazy ass jerk..... Mannn.... You can see the passion and fire in his eyes

I bet Lisa is the the actual reason why Akira become depressed.

this episode literally made me cry, that dont happen often.. but the pain in the mans eyes, he was so lost, i know the feeling

Liza is toxic. A bright person doesn't just wake up on the wrong side of the bed and lose all his confidence and self-esteem.

I feel like this is the only time the owner wasn't rude.

I just watched this and damn. I never cry; this had me teary- eyed. Poor guy, and his kids are amazing.

This might be my favourite episode. Never though I would almost cry in an episode.

I feel Akira. Not because I'm Asian or some other stupid reason but because when I'm getting scolded I become speachless. I think speaking might make things worse. I have anxiety of when I'm being asked to talk I don't know what to answer because it might be wrong and make me look even dumber than I already am. He's on the verge of shattering. When you're being scold and you feel really guilty about it, when you try to talk you just start crying. Same with laughing, if someone tickles you and you talk you suddenly burst into laughter.

The son and daughter were raised well. They are amazing children who have so much love for their family.

dude I dont usually get emotional watching shows like this but the whole section at their house had me bawling fr this is such a good episode
