It’s been six months and this Carlsbad garden is thriving!
The client added some contrasting “bark wood” 1/2 inch rock on top of the Cali gold 3/8 and I love it!
It softens the look and creates another layer of interest.
The boulders, honey onyx, Grand Canyon, Jasper Purple and Baja Cresta are some of the most stunning we’ve ever used!
Remember to provide shade, not water to your succulents in hot weather.

The tip about not watering in the heat was super helpful. Pretty sure that’s what happened with mine when they got hit with the morning rain and then blasted by the 100 degree temps a few hours later. 😖 learned the hard way on that one.

Laura, Something you and your followers should be aware of regarding systemic pesticides is that the pesticide remains in the plant for it's life. Therefore, any plants that flower should have stems removed before they bloom, so that pollinators do not consume the insecticide and perish. Just trying to save the bees!

Wow, I haven't heard you say "resist the urge to water" in a while. Lol.... I remember you saying that when I first started getting into cactus and succulents, because I was an over-waterer and would always hear you in my mind saying "resist the urge to water" 😆 and I would hold off. Lol

I’m in Tucson and have been a follower for 5 or 6 months. I’m hooked. This is such a helpful video. I love when you point and say the plant names. I’ll watch this multiple times. Greg is so good and smooth with the camera using wide shots and close shots. I like to watch your older videos too and am learning so much. I’ve had some of my succulents survive and even thrive here over the summer. I knew there would be losses but that’s how I learn. I didn’t even try the tender plants you grow there near San Diego except a few in a semi shady spots in pots. I’m on my third succulent “mounded” garden now. I probably shouldn’t plant this time of year but the nursery plants are accumulating on the back patio. Thank you all.

Thanks for the tip about not watering during high heat. I'm so tempted when I look at the poor babies.

I live in Sacramento and starting this Thursday we will be in triple digits. 104 up to 111 for a full week. I have not watered for about 10 days so I was going to water everything this evening and cover tomorrow. However, I just heard you say DON'T water. Yikes, I thought I was supposed to water them. Good thing I watched this video when I did. Thanks for saving my babies Laura

Don’t do it lol, regrets and mistakes were made with mine just recently. Didn’t even take weeks for it to rot and burn, took less than 6 hours!

@@Simply.KiraMarie I'm pretty sure that is how I lost a few plants. Thank you for sharing because I now realize I am the cause of rot with about five plants. I watered a while back in preparation for the high heat. I never considered the plantsvwould go dormant during the extreme heat.

I think I know the Aeonium answer. Probably the plant got sunburn from before it acclimated, and now that has the new leaves, it can handle all the sunlight from the day and won't get sunburn again.

YEP! I learned this lesson the hard way with a pot of Sedum nussbaumerianum that got left in the deep shade behind my hedges during my home "nursery" move. I moved them into the sun with the others and forgot them AGAIN! The leaves burnt to a crisp in one day, but they still felt healthy to the touch, so I moved them to morning sun/afternoon dappled shade to see what would happen. The new leaves are beautiful, and the burnt leaves just fell off. This was not the kind of stress they were looking for.

Getting folks to not water when it is hot is so difficult. We are in Zone 9B and are getting ready for 5 days over 100. I have posted in our garden club about not watering when it’s so hot. It’s amazing how much flack I get. One member is running her drip 15 minutes morning and evening every day. 🤯😱😢 This garden is stunning.

This garden looks amazing. Could the homeowner maybe swap locations with the etiolated longfingers and the stressed-out crassula & cotyledon? Also, gotta say, Greg is the best cameraman!

A real dilemma for us. Here in Long Beach we are going to be on all outside watering restriction from Sept 6th to the 20th. I was going to water everything throughly just before the restriction….but it’s also going up into the upper 90s & even 100 next week. What to do???

Could the Farina powder be fading as the aeonium gets older and that's why it burns ?

Looks amazing and I also love what you did and your new home. I have a question about your use of trees-I am wondering about MANZANITA TREE. Detritus minimal since it’s not deciduous, and white flowers in late winter and berries in spring and summer. Could it work in a succulent garden?

The new growth is after the plant gets burned then acclimates so therefore the new growth is going to be acclimated to that amount of sun. Also..older leaves r weaker.

The sunburn I would imagine is due to the length of exposure to the sun, old growth has longer exposure? Not sure, just guessing!

I have noticed that succulents with grey foliage are prone to scale as is the cancer mite on the small aloe.

shade them to try to prevent dormancy when the plants will not be able to use the recent moisture. The spun fabric row cover etc work great!
