Bio
"This Quebec, Canada-based death metal band, formed by Luc Lemay (vocals), Sylvain Marcoux (guitar), Eric Giguere (bass) and Stephane Provencher (drums), promised great things on their 1991 debut, Considered Dead, which featured guest spots from the Death guitarist James Murphy and Cannibal Corpse vocalist Chris Barnes.
The Roadrunner Records label had signed the band on the strength of the impressive ...And Then Comes Lividity demo of 1990. However, The Erosion Of Sanity failed to make an impact in the midst of the black metal explosion of 1993 and band and label parted ways. Gorguts then fell silent for five years, and many fans assumed that they had parted ways permanently, but singer Lemay returned in 1998 with a new line-up (guitarist Steeve Hurdle, bass player Steve Cloutier and drummer Patrick Robert), a new contract with the Olympic label and Obscura, which lived up to its title by exploring progressive, almost avant garde areas to an uncertain response. From Wisdom To Hate, featuring new guitarist Daniel Mongrain, was similarly difficult, but Gorguts are nothing if not persevering.
In the summer of 2008 Luc decided to do a new record to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band. The idea for the new line-up came together after the suggestion from my longtime partner in crime, Steeve Hurdle. One evening after a NEGATIVA rehearsal, Steeve brought up the fact that 2009 being the 20th anniversary of GORGUTS, it would be nice for me to give to the fans a new record!!! I immediately loved the idea, and not long after, I started writing material for this record. Then I got in touch with John Longstreth (ORIGIN, DIM MAK), and John said yes right away! John and I have been writing to each other for a few years, and we both had back then the intention of doing some kind of musical project together. Then I knew from square one that I wanted to have Colin Marston on bass. Big Steeve showed me some DYSRHYTHMIA videos.... that's how I got blown away by the playing and musical style of Kevin Huffnagel! At my big surprise, they both agreed to be part of my next record!!!!
A new record is expected in 2012

Which is interesting since other bands were writing and releasing avant garde death metal at the time (Demilich). Weren't Gorguts signed to Roadrunner in their early days? It would make sense that a major label like that wouldn't think that Obscura was very marketable, even to metalheads...still, in a way, I'm glad it was released when it was, since Obscura's recording quality is some of the finest in the genre imo.

Well, I don't think Roadrunner not thinking it was marketable was the reason they dropped Gorguts, they started dropping nearly all of their death metal bands in the mid-90s, IIRC to gain more popularity and make way for more contemporary/nu metal bands. I'm also glad it was released the way it was, but I wish they had done a slightly better job marketing it. Same thing goes with From Wisdom to Hate, another awesome, forward-thinking album.

Yeah, apparently the band had a hell of a time getting this album released. They'd worked out all of the songs by I think 1995, but they couldn't find a label to release it for a long time.

You're probably right. I forgot that Roadrunner had dropped all the other DM acts as well. Sometimes it's hard to imagine that so many extreme acts were signed on major labels and even got some MTV exposure...

in 1993 I was 5/6 yrs-old playing Sonic Spinball for Sega Genesis and starting kindergarten (first school). I was watching a lot of Nickelodeon (Rugrats, Doug, Ren & Stimpy, Pete & Pete, etc.) it wouldn't be until 2003 til I started my own metal band
