That's great . Sometimes we have to take care of it due to your safety in the water.

wish kayak companies put thick delrin strips on keels and bottoms...would last forever and could drag them over volcanos
@AFishingGeek

Agreed. I guess it would eventually wear out though and need to be replaced. The Gorilla Tape is cheap and functional - two words I like a lot. :)

I did the same thing to my kayak and it holds up great!

My experience: it only protects the hull from minor scratches. If you hit rocks or concrete, the tap gets ripped easily, and you will need to replace it; the hull will not be damaged as bad as if it was not taped. Not try to discourage people doing it - I do it too, just want people to have the right expectation.

Good Idea, will have to put it to use with the roll I have!

Try Keel Eazy adhesive backed plastic strips to really armor plate your wear spots. They make a product for plastic boats and fiberglass/Kevlar boats.

I 2nd Keel eazy. you can also make your own bow keel cap out of irrigation pipe. just cut it lengthwise, heat with heat gun and form to your kayak.

I've thought of doing this exact same thing, and I already have a roll. I think I'll try it. It's a LOT cheaper than the keel tape you see advertised. Thanks for the video!
@AFishingGeek

You are welcome. I still have the tape on from last season. A little worn but still working on the keel. I've pulled tape off the back as I don't think it's really needed. Good luck!

Thank you. I think it should be better to cut tape with scissors ?

Seriously, HDPE will give you superior protection and for many years. HDPE is everywhere (plastic barrels, etc) Cut a strip, put it in an oven or use a heat gun, when it is melted and pliable you can form it to any spot that you wish to protect. A little trim work (possibly) and the adhesive of your choice (silicone works well for me) and Bob’s your uncle, Superior scuff protection, and the same material that most kayaks are made of. Don’t want to knock this vid but if this tape job is giving you adequate protection, , , , , , ,, you probably didn’t really need any in the first place

What type of silicone to use? Is a marine type one.
@AFishingGeek
@AFishingGeek 4 года назад
Yes, I used the marine type silicone when needed. This video was just gorilla tape though. Works great!
@pa1264

@@AFishingGeek so gorilla tape works fine.
@sweatshopjesus
@sweatshopjesus 2 года назад
Silicone won't permanently to HDPE any better than Gorilla Tape. You need Sikaflex 291i, marine goop, JB weld (marine) or a similarly functioning adhesive.

this is a awsome video..very cheap and i build and fix all types of stuff..$ for $ its the best..and for the ones that are saying that there is better out there...of course there is.. always will be but this is cheap easy and a roll will last many years ..some people like to do stuff and have to do what they can.. and there is better but with everything it will and can be broken or were out..taken care of what you have is a most..my stuff aint much but its mine and i worked hard for it.. not much diffrence than changeing your own oil in your truck..cheap oil or top dollar ..its better than no oil

i have the whole bottom of my lure 13.5 covered in this stuff. its been a life saver. hit a stump full speed with my trolling motor and it banged up the tape but the hull was just fine. also i recommend putting it on like scales so like tapered towards the back it reduces drag and keeps water from forcing its way under the tape

I tried that. Used the yak 3 times and decided to take it all off. Really didn't do anything for protecting the areas needing protection.
@fishonkayakadventure
@fishonkayakadventure 3 года назад
exactly what I was going to say. first time you touch an object the outside of the tape grabs it and just gets ripped to shreds. wasted 20 feet of excellent tape trying to do this

I think a layer of Flex Seal Paste in key areas of the canoe or kayak would protect much much longer !!

Well you make it look so easy, I've found a leak on my new kayak after I took it out on the water the other day water came from where the screws are drilled into the kayak that's Chinese made yaks for you.

You might get a little better adhesion using a heat gun. First clean the surface with alcohol. Next, heat the surface you will cover... get it good and hot, to the point the plastic is shiny indicating start of melt. When you put the tape on this clean, hot surface the tape will conform to the surface. Press it all in, then use the heat gun on the tape and continue with a bit more smoothing.

It does not hold, loctite, nouthing holds on polyurethane. I have tried it all. Vut straps out of plastic containers and used heat gun at 1100 degrees f. Worked in with flat of screwdriver and the plastic know end of screw driver. Not very pretty but will only ware down in time from gravel just add more straps with heat gun. Belive me.

Kydex probably would work to

cookie246 I know this is over a year old, but found this while working on my ‘yak. I literally just put 3mm Kydex on the keel. Hopefully it’ll work on the ‘yak as well as it does with my holster.

what about using some thin sheet metal and a waterproof adhesive to make skid plates?
@prairiecracker214
@prairiecracker214 4 года назад
JeepJeep234 , really the best and cheapest is HDPE, it’s everywhere (plastic barrels, etc) Cut a strip, put it in an oven or use a heat gun, when it is melted and pliable it will form to any place that you would like protection. A little trim work and silicone adhesive or your preference will give you superior protection

prairie cracker you are a legend my friend I’ve been looking at different was to add some keel protection to my 5.4m aluminium boat. It’s getting old & beat up around the keel welds from trailer & giant wave jumping 😅. Your way is best coz I can make them as wide as I want then I can spray the whole bottom of hull with truck bed paint so she will be solid & sound proof
@thebluesmatter9689
@thebluesmatter9689 7 лет назад
So I've tried this and the slightest drag on a rock just goes right through. I am now trying some none skid tape used on outdoor stairways. I just installed it today. 3M I'll let you know how it works. Another thought. What about spray on bed liner???? Rostoleum makes it in a can.
@AFishingGeek
@AFishingGeek 7 лет назад
There's a great Feelfree FB user group that the discussion of bed liner came up on a while back. I think the consensus is it all gets torn up and needs to be replaced at some point. I have a follow up video that I still need to complete that shows how six or so trips look and what wear areas are the worst. Stay tuned.... Oh, and there were some pictures circulating on the same forum of someone who cut a Lure down the center line due to an accident. The keel is pretty thick up front. Even so, I'm doing everything I can to make it last longer. Thanks for watching.
@CyberYaker

I used the spray in bed liner from a can. They kind you can purchase at Home Depot. It scrapes off very easily.
@illduitmyself
@illduitmyself 7 лет назад
wait....... you have a wheel in your kayak??????????
@AFishingGeek
@AFishingGeek 7 лет назад
Sure do. The FeelFree Lure has a wheel-in-the-keel. It makes life much much easier on the boat ramp. And that's not even the highlight of the kayak. The Gravity Seat is awesome and the sonar pod makes it easy to mount a fish finder. The wide beam means I can stand and fish comfortably. If you're in the market, it's worth looking at a FeelFree Lure.

Looks good to me! Hope you get a season out of this job!
@AFishingGeek
@AFishingGeek 6 лет назад
Depends on how much you fish with your kayak and how rough the boat ramp and bottom of the area you're fishing are. My boat ramp is like sandpaper and if I just drag it around it's rough on the Gorilla Tape. I got maybe a dozen outings before I figured out I needed to pay more attention to how I'm landing, etc. Regardless, it's a great way to save the bottom of your kayak.

Don't seem like the tape would stay on there very long in the water.
@AFishingGeek

You'd be surprised. I spent a lot of time in the Lure the later part of the Summer and into mid-Fall and it did start to fray a bit at the end, but the adhesive is pretty solid. YMMV. If you try it out, let me know how it worked for you.

Fishing Geek Just bought my Feel free lure 11.5, was going to ask how well the tape holds up. Think I'll do this before my first trip out in it.
@AFishingGeek
@AFishingGeek 7 лет назад
I was surprised last year when I did it for the first time. It takes a beating but the best part about it is it's pennies/nickels vs. the $70+ for the commercial stuff that, from what I've read and heard on line, doesn't stand up any longer than the tape. I haven't been out yet but will post an update once I get some more miles on the first application. Let me know how it works out for you as well.

Fishing Geek I do appreciate the video. It's a great idea, and makes sense. Good thing about doing this now is not having to wait til it's scratched up. I already have the tape, so why not??

The FeelFree Lure Keel is 5/8" THICK! I have pics... Tape will do nothing but add weight, drag and a sticky mess. you do NOT need tape.
@caryverhalen
@caryverhalen 4 года назад
Agreed I've used it and it was a peeling sticky mess at times and lasted 4 or 5 outings. I was dissatisfied. Gator patches are awesome but way Way! Overpriced.
@Leonardd6133
@Leonardd6133 5 лет назад
Why not put that tape over the wheel and let the tape take the beating?
@AFishingGeek
@AFishingGeek 5 лет назад
Great idea! Might try that next season. My guess is that it will get pretty worn out quickly whereas the tape on the hull less so as it's not as much in contact with hard surfaces unless you start dragging it as it tilts. If you try it out, let us know how it works.

Anything that's going to poke a hole in your kayak is going to go right through some duct tape.
@AFishingGeek
@AFishingGeek 6 лет назад
True. I'm worried less about something poking a hole in it than the repeated wear. That being said, the Lure has a pretty tough hide. I'm just prolonging a future investment in a replacement kayak. I'm cheap like that. :)
