He insisted that this was done in one take and his dad hadn't heard it before. They are both military men and his dad is an old school 'don't show you emotions' man so him just placing his hand on james arm was lovely ❤

According to Promonews and another source (but I just can't seem to remember if it was something in print or an interview on a daytime show) he said it took them "a few takes" to get it and about "half of a day of filming it with his father". But his father didn't hear the complete song/video until later just before it was released. I LOVE this song and the video is probably one of the most raw and emotional videos I've ever seen and the fact it's also a real and true event that was happening in his life at the time makes it even more amazing and it really shows on camera. It's just such an amazing song because I think it's very relatable to many....the 1st time I heard it was just a few months after finding my son when he took his own life and even though the "players" aren't the same it was his raw emotions of the painful possibility of him losing his father that got me. The lyrics just build up with every word and they don't let up. It's an amazing song.❤

James and his Dad Charles are both former British Army officers who both saw active service. (James a Captain, Charles a Colonel) Charles was dying from stage 4 kidney failure at the time of this filming. Thankfully a kidney donor was eventually found for Charles. James sang this as a tribute to his Dad. For a soldier to show such raw emotion and vulnerability is very brave. This song was recorded in one take. All proceeds from this song were donated to veterans charities. So much respect for James. He does a lot for veterans charities. You should also watch his song "Carry you home" inspired from his years in the Army. That's really sad too.

He wrote this when his dad was nearing the final stages of chronic kidney disease. Thankfully, his dad was able to get a transplant (after James recorded this song) and is doing well now.

not having a real relationship with my father i thought this song wouldn’t really hit me the way it has most ppl. but then as it played thru it hit me that NOT having that connection with him will probably be our biggest regret when our time comes to a close. i still haven’t given up hope that things can change after watching this vid it reminds me of what we could’ve had and still can.

I still tear up listening to this song 😢 when it first came out I could relate it to losing my Dad .... The circumstances with his father really hit home in my own life as my father had a kidney transplant when I was 5, he passed from heart disease while waiting on heart transplant list. My younger brother is currently awaiting a kidney, he's 4 years into dialysis and the waiting on the call is the hardest part... Anyway I just thought I'd share how this song touches my heart ❤️

I think, this might be a message to you from the Lord, that although you and your Dad are not close and your memories of him may not be wonderful, you might want to find your father and say what needs to be said before something happens. That way there are no regrets for you both. Bless you.

@@TrevandErin I'm so sorry. My husband's father was like yours and although I encouraged my husband he never made contact with his dad so they could express their feelings. Well, my husbands father passed on and it caused my husband a long period of depression (years). He regretting not having met with his real father and spoken to him. He did attend his funeral, but it was bitter sweet. My husband passed of cancer a few years back and it was so very sad that he kept returning to what he didn't do with his relationship with his real father. This world has deep sorrows and I'm sorry your dad and you had no chance to face one another. God Bless you.

James's father was dying from stage 4 kidney cancer. After the song dropped, At the last minute his dad got a kidney transplant from a distant relation. They were both British Military and his dad apparently said the 'You're not my son, I'm not your father line when James was stationed to Kosovo.

I don’t mean it like that. I just mean he’s an artist. So he’s evoking an emotion with the song. The video behind it and everything. That’s what I meant. He could write the song about his dad but the idea behind the video is to evoke the emotion

😂 No. No one wants to stare at someone watching a video or listening to a song all the way through. That's just creepy and lazy reacting. You seem to misunderstand the point of music reactions in this space. I'd suggest trying other types of reaction videos to fill your weird needs.

What part of you is Christian? The man's Father is dying for real, he wrote this song for him, his recording company wanted him to redo it without his Father present so he would not be so emotional, he refused. He wanted his Dad to know how much he was loved before he passed!

ALL you RU-vidrs need to learn how to edit! There is so much difference in your speaking sound and the sound of the James Blunt video youre playing ! Edit it in a way that the volume is equally loud! SO ANNOYING !!Whats even more annoying is the stopping all the time ! Why cant you listen to it fully and afterwards react ! ALMOST ALL YOU RU-vid REACTERS keep pausing the clip and many times at the most important emotional part of the song !

hes not trying to show sadness his dad was dying with stage 4 kidney disease this song was to show how much he loved his dad and they both come from military backgrounds and they are british, stiff upper lip, he was telling his dad how much he loved him and how much he would miss him, HE WAS NOT TRYING TO SHOW EMOTIONS THOSE TIERS ARE REAL!!!! sorry to say but when you have lost someone you love, hopefully not for a long time, try watching this video again I promise you will shed tiers because you will understand his pain. I lost my Dad my last words were " i love you" a few hours later he died I miss him every day ..................................
