Understand the idea behind passing tones and how to create them on the fly...use this in Church, to spice up boring songs, etc.

ImprovPianoTips I have been looking everywhere so I could watch someone play chords and change chords in r&b/gospel/neo soul. I just can't listen with enough discernment to get all the notes that are played

I hear ya on that! It is SUPER difficult to listen to gospel chords and try to discern what they are... glad you enjoyed the video!

Yea me too, the piano players that can play like this don't often teach. This is a very rare scene, someone who is truly skilled at jazz but can break it down and teach the rules of harmony. Like gold!

Those that dont know and need theory... At 8:25 hes doing a 1-3-6 progression in the key of B Major.. using B Major =1 andddddddddddd A Flat Minor Dom 7th/Add 9 =6 chord and using E Flat Major Dom 7th Sharp 9/Sharp 5 as a passing chord to get from the 1 to the 6...Good to know theory.. :) ............ Think of it as point a to point b u need a bridge to get you over to your location and the E Flat Major/dom 7th/sharp 9/sharp 5 is that chord to get you there... ......... Im guessing a 2-5-1 was to follow after those chords but you can go anywhere if you know your chords

It's remarkably incorrect to use B major and Ab minor in this context. It's G# minor!

Very good teacher. Only one thing, those are passing chords no passing tones, theoretically passing tones are ornaments for a melody (passing tones and accented passing tones), harmonically is a chord the one that precedes the target chord.

This is a great video but what's happening here is a secondary dominant. You just add a dominant 7 chord with the root a fifth above your destination chord. It works before any chord you'd want to go to, not just the 6 chord. For instance if you want to go to an A minor chord, play an E7 first. Add alterations like the #5th if you want for more tension.
@jonathanflores2302
@jonathanflores2302 6 лет назад
You are a 100% correct but I think his explanation makes it easy to begin using in any key without understanding the music theory

I'm a drummer but i also sing as well and I love playing some chords on The piano and singing at The same time specialy Gospel ones.. I don't have any kind of technic or what so ever but I do try to figure out positioning The fingers to the following chords on the keybord! Regardless, Great lesson! I may take quite sometime but I'll end up to menage somehow! PS: sorry if my writting is kind of bad I'm portuguese and I don't know much of proper writting
