I bought a mango wood concert from Caravelle Kitchen a couple of months ago. It sounds amazing, and feels lovely to hold and play. Best thing uke I own (I have 7). Mine has dots at 5, 7, 10, 12, 15 and side dots too.
Thanks Baz, totally surprised by volume, had to turn my headset down, nearly blew my head off. Lovely finger picked and could hold itself against many concerts. Nice construction. Thanks for the great review, have a good week.
What a beautiful instrument. It chimes like a bell! The cost is nothing for a luthier made ukulele. It's an amazing time to get the uke of your dreams! Thanks, Baz!
I have an artisansal ukulele by Koalition ukulele of Cornwall and I think that the slight imperfections make the instrument. I am pleased to have supported a domestic craftsman.
I'd stumbled on these (I think) a while ago on Etsy and thought the prices surprisingly good - and yes a selection of very interesting instruments. Lovely to hear this - a very lively sounding instrument! Thank you for the review!
This really tickled my fancy. For starters,I LOVE sopranos and when they're as good as this one looks and sounds, I'm basically smitten anyway. Volume - incredible and whether strummed or picked sounds so clear and unmuddied. The price - embarresses some much better known brands. Love the thin body too. It's an absolute delight! Thanks, as always for the great review Baz. Stay well my friend 👍
Such a wonderful ukulele! After seeing your review and looking at his website I couldn't help myself. I ended up ordering one of his mezzo sopranos for myself. I love everything about it. Great review!
I really like this one. I don’t mind the hand made marks at all. I think the whole solid body is strong and helps the instrument to vibrate evenly I would think. I like the sound as well as it is bright. Yes but not tinny if you follow me. The strings may need looking at to get a little better sound or to make it less bright. A good one.. Thanks Baz …DOC
Glyph Ukuleles, a ukulele luthier that used to work out of Maryland in the States coined the term, "Mezzo Soprano" back in the oughts for a scale between soprano and concert. Beansprout Ukuleles also make this scale length and they call it an "Alto Ukulele." This one sounds ab fab at least over my computer. I'm sure the finish will get better as he practices making more and more. This one is right up my alley. Cheers!.
Lovely, very nice to look at. I liked the tone; a bit bright on the single notes when tuning up, but for me, it warmed up nicely on your usual stumming demonstrations. I liked the scale length, speaking as a natural concert player with a soprano preference. It looks like a lot of value for the money. Good review; thanks for introducing it.
Thanks a lot for a very nice review! I fell in love with this wonderful uke. There is only on problem, to me. The lack of position marks on the side. Those are even more important than the marks on the fretboard, in my personal opinion. The idea of carving it all out from one piece of mahogany is superb! Like it. Like it. like it ❤
Enjoyable and as usual a thorough review Barry. I understand that Ukuleles are sent to you to review but also you buy them. What Ukuleles do you own that are keepers? It would be great to know.
Not as many as you would think - Kanile'a K1 Tenor, Magic Fluke Flea, Magic Fluke Fluke, KM Ukuleles dreadnought tenor, Dave Morgan vintage soprano, Anuenue Color Concert, Flight Aurora baritone
I’m intrigued by his construction method. The only thing I don’t like is the headstock. I’d much prefer he used a standard closed shape there. It certainly has a lot of power, and sounds better than most sopranos. I’d bet that the one piece carved construction is the cause of its power. The neck surely helps its resonance. Don’t you agree?
Side dots are more important that fretboard dots. Kills me when some new luthiers don't include them or make them very small and dark. Strings by mail sells decals... for the side markers.
Agree! I had a uke with nice coloured side dots but too small and the colour didn't stand out enough. May seem a small detail but is important. Also better to have extra fretboard position markers than not. Concerned the wooden nut would wear down over time but I suppose the zero fret prevents this. Not mad about the black ebony strip but I guess it may be useful. I remembered from GAU's other reviews how he likes flat neck profiles - I would really like to have ones like that, plus wider necks, radiused fretboards, proper action..
