I think it's a stunning uke 😀 Obviously the ebony wood create good sound, with high volume and a good sustain. I have a cheap but good tenor uke from Hartwood. Also ebony, but with no stripes. The sound is very much like the sound of this Kala. I think Hartwood is a British brand, but it's made in China. Thanks for a very nice review of a very nice uke ❤

Great review, Baz. I love your description of it being "perfectly pleasant!" Kala always gives good value for the money spent! I subbed to Patreon for you...about time I paid a bit for this great content!

Ultimately, yeah - that's what it is. Not earth shattering, but also not wallet shattering and a good old ukulele for most people.

Hi Baz, When I see a notification pop up for another review, I can't watch the video with sound when I am at work, so I have got into reading the full written reviews instead. I love them! Your forthrightness often makes me chuckle. Thanks for this review. Enjoyed reading it. By the way, I was just looking at your website to buy a T-Shirt. I can't find them. Have they sold out?

I have the same model of about the same year maybe a bit older. my board and bridge are a lot darker than yours. maybe mine was the last of the rosewood. lovely instrument though
@josequins9099

I actually really like the lighter wood for the fretboard and bridge. Most ukes have them darker so it's a unique contrast.

Hi Barry, i have been following your reviews for quite awhile now. Gotten myself Kala KA-C back then after watching your entry level uke comparisons, have not regret a day, good value for the price. I'm now considering getting a tenor. Just wondering how does the EBY-T fare against the Baton Rouge V2/V4-T Sun? In terms of sound and quality of their built. Both brands cost about the same price here.
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 4 года назад
Both very good - can't comment on sound comparisons as I dont have them side by side, plus my view would be purely subjective. But equally well built. Same sort of volume. The Kala probably edges it on the overall finish and look, but the BR from memory has better sustain and is lighter.

Sounds just like the Kala KA-TE that I recently sold when I got solid mahogany to replace it. Do all the Kala laminates sound the same?
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 5 лет назад
Generally speaking yes, all very similar. The outer veneer doesn’t do enough to impart tone of its own. That said, different laminates can differ, but that’s just variance in construction inside.
@nickiemcnichols5397
@nickiemcnichols5397 5 лет назад
Another great review, Baz. I've noted over the years that certain makes of laminate tenor Ukes lack volume and punch in the low ranges. This is one of them, so it seems are the Ohanas. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I hearing things?
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 5 лет назад
I know what you mean, but I don't think it's a brand things as such. For me, it's that I think laminates work better on sopranos, possibly concerts. When you move to tenor laminates they seem to lose all character. Weirdly, baritones work well as laminates, but I think that supports my theory as the lower tuning helps. I don't think it's just this brand or Ohana that sound a bit lacking on the low range in laminate tenors is what I am saying.

Which tenor ukulele do you prefer between: "Snail SUT-M1 Tenor" and "Kala KA-EBY-T Striped Ebony Tenor"? Thank's

Sorry - never give choices on comparisons - very subjective. The Snail scored slightly higher though.

Listening to your review I think you should title it "the Honda Accord of Tenor Ukulele". It's not earth shattering, it's not flashy, it looks a but dated, but for the money it will reliably get you where you want to go for a long time.

I got this as my second ukulele after my first rather cheap soprano one. But I experience the sound to be very loud and sharp, actually a bit unpleasant for the ears. I sonder if this maybe is a thing with ukes? I'm rather new to them and I would love a uke that is rich, deep and clear in sounds but maybe that is just a dream. Or maybe I just got the wrong one for my taste? I find myself playing even less now since I got this one which feels a bit sad.
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 4 года назад
No - it's not a thing with ukes. We do all, however, perceive sound differently. I personally found this one to sound nice to my ears. Your perception may be different. You will find some solid wood ukes are deeper, woodier and darker sounding. Some are bright and sharp. Strings can make a difference too. But.. the uke is not designed to be a deep sounding instrument.

@@GotAUkulele Thank you so much for your reply! This makes me understand it a bit more and know what to look for. I'm hoping to be able to go somewhere I can try a baritone and see if that might be more in tune with my ears :)

Thanks for a nice review ❤️ I get the impression this is a very decent good sounding ukulele, but with a look nasty as h-ll, because of that wood...😉
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele Год назад
I rather like it, but wood looks are divisive of course. The reason brands like this went with these exotics comes from a good place I guess. When I started out - 99% of ukes largely looked the same (all koa, all mahogany or spruce on a mahogany back) - brands all were putting out the same things just with different logos. Nice to have more choice I think. Being laminate of course there is no tonal signature here to thing about - it's all about looks.

I was looking forward to the baritone ziracote coming to the UK, but it came with a walnut fret board to me it spoiled the look, so I didn't get one dam u cities 😢

I hear noises that the restriction is going to be lifted - not sure. We may see a return to rosewood!
@Bob_Amaral_Photography

Not to bad, but you lost me at a 34 nut. That is a soprano/concert size. Even that is small. Many companies are doing 36 and 37 on their smaller ukes. Like you said, they don't include any extras. I just bought an Enya. It included a beautiful gig bag, strap, extra string set, capo, sand shaker, picks, and a polish cloth. Plus the Enya was cheaper and better sounding than this Tenor. Kala better up their game. There are some other brands that are slowly catching up. Thanks for the great review Baz. Looks like I will be saving some money this week. :)
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 5 лет назад
The narrow nut thing is something I don't think I will ever understand. Original Hawaiian ukes are simply not like that. I think the 'trend' started when instruments started coming in from Chinese production lines in big numbers. Somebody must have specified it though!
@edwardpetersen4309
@edwardpetersen4309 5 лет назад
I think Kalas sound great but every one I've come across are too narrow at the nut as well as the bridge. I like the new fingerpicked tune.
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 5 лет назад
Yeah, it’s a funny choice now clearly a bit dated. Strangely, Kala need to take some of the blame for the fashion as they were one of the first to go the Chinese factory route. Still, I get that for some people the width isn’t an issue. It is for me though!
@partyontheobjective
@partyontheobjective 5 лет назад
I always hated those huge wings on Kala's bridges. I agree the fingerboard should be dark or black, but that neck... Hm. When you reviewed the Breedlove, I commented saying they should've stained the neck black, but seeing this, I reconsidered. I really don't like it here!
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 5 лет назад
Yeah - I don't like wide bridges myself either
