Great review! Kala seems to be standing still lately with their offerings. The uke itself seems alright, not outstanding, and there are plenty of options for an entry level uke for around the same price.

Thanks for the video. My daughter received one as a gift. I filed down the nut slots and the bridge (got it to 0.010" at the nut and 0.040" at the 10th) and put a set of low G Fluoros on it and the intonation is actually pretty good on this one. Yes, it's a bit boxy sounding but this one seems a little better sounding than the one you have in the video. It is certainly a durable instrument and was worth an experimental salvage for the price,

Hi Baz, I'm after another entry level (sub £100) uke to add to my list of possibilities so was looking forward to this review as a chance for Kala to redeem itself in this sector, and still they fail to inspire me, so they don't get on the list, again. I'm afraid they may become the Golden Wonder crisps of the ukulele world if they continue to seemingly sit on their laurels. Enya and Flight are the ones to beat for me. Thanks for the frank and honest review as usual.

I agree with you about the slot bridge idea, and not just for beginners. They do look neater on a soprano, and they are easier.

The Kala learn to play series was one of the first ukuleles I found when I was researching getting started. But as you said, the tie bar bridge was intimidating and scary to me as a total beginner and I went with a slot style beginner model instead. It seems like a small design change to seem more "accessible" to other new players like me.

I totally agree with you, Baz. Kala has lost their edge as the competition has really upped their game. There are so many other better choices in this price range and even less. Kala really needs to work on updating their line. Otherwise, Kala is only going to lose more of their market share and end up going from a past leader to a future has been. Kala, you getter fire up that quality control and sharpen those pencils!

Youre spot on. Flight, Snail, Enya (and what was that thing last week? The Bee?) et al must all be sniggering at Kala's recent 'affordable' output. Such an inconsistent brand that can't seem to make its mind up on prices, build quality, availability, purpose, and more! I think it would be a great idea if they rebooted the Dolphin (as they recently did with the Waterman, to some success too) as a Learn to Play instrument.

Ohana has some nice options for beginners. Also if someone is OK with the $250 range for their first uke, that will open up a lot more options to get an instrument that is many times better than what most people choose for their first one. Snail, KoAlana by KoAloha, Islander, aNueNue, Kai, Flight.

Great review again. I agree with you Barry Flight and Baton Rouge are the ones to watch both looks and intonation. Cant knock Kala for encouraging ukelele learning.

I don’t like their sales techniques, but I’ll say this. Kala helped us kick off our Library Learning Program. It does seem that they are losing their edge in quality. Smaller brands are gaining popularity, and Kala could soon get knocked off the top of the heap.

Yeah, I completely agree about this instrument. I used to own it, and it was good enough for the start. Then it drowned when I took it sailing. How very sad... But not really, because it wasn't expensive and it allowed me to look for something better. And for sailing trips, I got a Flight TUS, which also ended up in the sea, but is still in top shape. Couldn't agree more about Kala stagnating, too. They didn't make a new model in years and years, the new lines are the exact same ukes they're making only sparkly or with tops painted in garish colours. Oh, and Mandy Harvey is one of America's Got Talent singers/songwriters. What makes her stand out is that she's deaf and plays and sings from memory.

It almost as if they dismissed hiding the the neck joints and made them a design feature. You also bring up a good point with nut and string width. I get the tradition of those that came before but it's time to move on. My first uke was Kala KA-C and for me it was a great first uke. My 2nd uke has a wider nut and string width and it's just easier and more fun to play. The app stuff is helpful, I guess, but is it really that useful when there is so much beginner content available... on this website alone? Again, keep up the good work, your kill'n it.

Thanks for your reviews. I’m a newish player but thought Kala was typically a decent quality. On a whim I took a chance on a Kmise off of Amazon and I assume I really lucked out. Mostly looks nice. Sounds nice and after $ conversions is half the price. Little sad for Kala.

as always good review. Yea soundboard looks thick its a bad sign. It might be a good startkit for kiddos :P but I'd rather add extra 80$ and buy sth better, but its just me.

Enya is eating Kalas lunch. There carbon fiber soprano was on sale here in the USA for $59 with strap buttons tuner xtra strings much better deal!

That 2-tone neck reminds me of those black-and-white "saddle shoes" of the 1950s--IOW, intentional but what were they thinking? BTW, I have 2 beginner concerts that look and sound better... and were cheaper!

Seems like it has the potential to be a great starter but….. I’ve never owned a Kala, they don’t seem to be good value but they have the potential to be great.

I'm always baffled by the tie bar bridges on beginner ukuleles. Why make it harder than it needs to be?

If not kala, what's a good not too bright sounding beginner level uke ? Anyone?

Seems meh… I’m a bit disappointed with Kala here. I’ve been pleased in the past with their Ukes. It seems like they’re slipping a bit with their product line. Hopefully they’ll take your review into consideration with their quality control and design suggestions.

Great review as always enjoyed it. I really didn’t like this ukulele. To me it sounds plastic like as if the strings were cheap plastic and the tone started changing from the 5 or 6th fret up… I think there are better ukuleles for the $80 American. Enya Nova Saprano, even the $45 Vangoa which is in itself hit or miss sounds better and keeps in tune up the fret board. Thanks as always… your yank friend….DOC

Great review of a not so great Uke.

This reinforces my feeling that Kala has leadership issues. One hears horror stories about how they treat dealers and, except for Kala Elite (essentially a separate brand), they seem hellbent on making things on the cheap and spending money on marketing.
