In case the text near the beginning isn't readable, it says that you can use styrofoam takeaway boxes and meat packing trays for the same effect. You just have to wash them first. 😁

Ingenious idea! I love the rustic look of this. . . and so easy too! Thank you, Helen, for another nifty idea.

Thank you Sandi, I'm so glad you like it. Rustic is definitely the aesthetic but it looks really great and if course you can mix it up with different inks and different papers.

I'm so glad it was helpful Marina. I'm not sure the video really does the prints justice. They look lovely in the "flesh". I'm glad you like the idea!

Hi Helen: Another creative project. Love the idea of using stencils. Kind of reminds me of fiddling around on a Gelli Plate. Will definitely try your technique with the egg carton. 💜😎🇺🇸

Oh this is great! I've been wanting to make my own stamps but the thought of carving out a design on anything has stopped me. But this is so easy! No carving, so buying anything to make it from, just reach in the recycling for that empty egg carton and draw away!!! Thanks so much!

These look fabulous! I love prints, but never thought of using eggboxes - I will now! For lettering, which needs to be drawn mirror-wise to come out the right way on the print, you can flip a stencil over. I have made stamps using corn plasters, which already have a sticky side and can be easily mounted on a piece of cardboard, or an old cork gives a good handle (or makes an interesting stamp in itself). Elastic bands wound round a pencil and used like a rolling pin also work. The results are a bit unpredictable, so they are best for background papers. The little erasers you get on the end of pencils are great for dots, and a cheap pair of flip-flop sandals cut up with a craft knife gives you no end of patterns (get the largest size for more bang for your buck). I haven't done this for a while, and you reminded me of how much fun it is!

Oooh thanks for all this. The egg box was a surprisingly good substitute for craft foam. Thanks for flagging about words needed to be flipped over. I meant to mention this in the video and clean forgot. I have tried quite a few of the other techniques too and love the marks they make but holy moly that flip flop idea is inspired!! I'll definitely look out for a cheap thrift shop pair to give that a go. ❤️

@@journalingplanet Got the flip-flop idea from a book, Traci Bunkers' Print and Stamp Lab, which is excellent, and still available. She's all about DIY and re-purposing, and it's full of good ideas. I tried the flip-flop one, and it worked out well. Don't think you'd find them in thrift shops (would you wear someone's used flip-flops?), but they're really cheap new, and you want them clean. You can use every bit of them, and get larger stamps for backgrounds out of them too, so worth considering.

Oh you are terrible to enable my craft book buying habit. 🤣 I will definitely check it out. In terms of the flip flop my local thrift store gets seasonal new stuff sent from Amazon. Must be some kind of charitable tax write-off. I should have made that clear before letting you imagine me stamping with somebody's old, used flip flop. 🙈😂

@@journalingplanet Ah, that makes sense (about the flip-flops!)! Sorry about the enabling 😂 I'm really strict about what books I buy now (didn't use to be!). This one is all about seeing the potential for using everyday/cheap objects as stamps and stencils, and includes both flat and 3D projects, such as bags and shoes as substrates. Another good thing about cheap, temporary stamps is that you can also use them with paint, without worrying about ruining them. As these things go, it's pretty good, with lots of detail and examples. You might find a second-hand copy online, as it's not a recent book.
