I'm really pleased by how many of the plants recommended here are native to North America. Yeah, you've still got a few invasives in there, and that's pretty risky, but the ratio has changed pretty drastically over the last decade or so. It's fantastic.

As always Mark, you've provided me a wealth of information to help my wildlife pond. My local nursery has pond plants and they only sold floating hyacinths plants and water lettuce plants for ponds. Well just today I noticed the hyacinths have now flowered, so lovely! The water lettuce plants have been chewed and played with by the black bears while lounging in the pond, guess they like the taste. However the water lettuce plants are continuing to grow, despite the abuse. I will definitely mention your beginner plants here to the manager of the nursery with hopes they'll bring them in for next year's season. Thanks you!😀🌿🍀

Thank you for sharing your experience, water lettuce are very tough growing from the smallest heart, we are currently not allowed to grow them both in the UK due to a European Ban hopefully that will change as I love growing them!

Hello, I live in North Dakota and I have a water garden tub and was wondering what I would have to do for the winter as well as what plants would be best. For more information I live in zone 4 and kind of don’t want to restart my plants every year, though I understand if that is the only option
@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor 2 года назад
Depends where you locate the container water garden and how thick the sides are. As your in America you have lots of options, I would enjoy the water garden, we have tougher plants that are the back bone mostly grasses and reeds. However the colour come from the annuals. Their are plants that will come back every year but they might not be the ones you want to keep!

Hi Mark - I have a small goldfish pond in London (250 gallons). I have circa 10 medium sized fish in the pond, which is plagued by a heron from a nearby lake, so I have to have a mesh cover, which is not ideal for border plants, as they grow through it making it impossible to remove. What plants do you suggest? Lilly perhaps?

Great video. I am going to build a pond for my turtles, Do you have a recommendation on what type of plants will survive their attack, they eat everything. Love your channel.
@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor 2 года назад
Growing fast growing plants will be the best idea. Building an Aquascape ecosystem pond will give the turtles plenty to interact with, a lot of the time I hear turtles or fish have destroyed plants is that they are kept in a tank or pool set up, with not much going on so anything become a toy or food. I don’t know what pond you are building or how many turtles you are going to keep.

My question is fertilizing plants. I understand there are tablets you can add to a container which contains soil but what do you use for floating plants? Is there a liquid you can use and how will it affect my Koi. I have a very good filtration system and the pond isn’t that big so I’m not planning on a lot of plants. I have a few but want to add more. I use barley straw to combat algae and it works great. My water with 11 Koi is pristine . Thank you for your help!
@ThePondAdvisor

I don’t do any fertilizing of our floating plants (the fish do that) but you can add liquid fertiliser (if you wish). If your plants are struggling then give them time move them in to a stream or filter bed.

Hi Mark I introduced 4 Water Chestnuts (Trapa Natans) into my pond in the spring as an experiment to see how large they got and how much shade they would offer the koi in my small pond. As promised they popped to the surface when the plants sprouted. I was just wondering that now autumn is almost with us, I'm expecting the foilage to die off but what happened to the actual chestnuts? Is that the end of them or will the plant produce more 'baby' chestnuts? Will the dead plants clog up the water pump? I have tried introducing dwarf water lettuce (pistia stratiotis) from my aquarium (which I have to thin out in my aquarium each week) but they have simply went yellow and faded away to nothing. ( I introduce CO2 into my aquarium) Is the pond variety another variety?
@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor 2 года назад
No the pond pistia is the same, they don’t like wind or yellow due to shock. The Trapa are tropical so keep some of the chestnuts indoors and regrow or simply buy new ones next year. Remove the 4 ds to stop the filtration problems.

Hi Mark You said that Pickerel Weed was a deep marginal. How deep can it be planted? What would you recommend for planting with a depth of 18 inches/45 cm above the pot?
@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor 2 года назад
Pickerel weed love up to a third of the foliage under water. So depends on the size of the area and the size of plant you want. If you have a 18” section you can grow it on top of another pot (a stage pot) to start with and as the plant gets bigger remove the stage pot.

Mark, I'm a keen follower of your videos. A couple of questions.... My pond plants did really well the first year but my water soldiers failed to float and basically appear to have sunk and died ( they haven't reappeared anyway!!). Cheered yesterday however when I spotted a tiny bit of frogbit appearing. Also my water lilies look weak and with poor growth even though I repotted into large containers ( washing up bowls) in April and fertilised them and put them in shallow water in the greenhouse to nurse them along. My husband says I fuss the plants too much. Water Hawthorn typha milfoil and marsh marigolds going great guns though. What am I doing wrong?? I love my plants and hate it when I don't see them thriving!! Thank you!!
@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor Год назад
Water soldiers can get trapped in blanket weed. They sink in the colder months. They also take everything from the water so you might have used treatments to control algae and the floating plants did not like it. Repotting water lilies is good 👍🏻 stable condition, I would keep them in the pond as they might get to hot in the greenhouse in a small container

I have bought two bull rushes it is the root plus around a six inch stork. I have placed it in a large pot with aquatic soil and gravel and submerged it about a foot underwater. The entire plant is submerged. It is a large pot and the rim is higher than the top of the plant although there is around 10 litres of aquatic soil etc the pot is large. Is this ok? Thanks

I am guessing yes however if the stork has not reached the surface in a week put something under the basket

may seem a daft question but i bought some underwater plants in a pot and wondered do i leave them in the pot with the soil ?

Great question, personal preference, if you keep them in pots they are easier to manage, if you have fish they might knock them over. If you have under water planting pockets or gravel then plant them. If you are planting in a pond full of water. Wash all the media of the roots first.

I don't recommend add soil in the base of the pond unless you want a large aquatic plant basket. Planting pockets yes, containers yea, bare root plants yes 👍🏻

Hi Mark. We bought a second hand preformed pond and we are hoping to keep it going without a pump just with plants. However this pond was a fish pond before hence it doesn’t have enough shelves for the marginals. Is it ok to create these shelves with rocks? Are there specific rocks recommended to use inside the pond? And finally, do we use any other material at the bottom of the pond (inside) such as building sand, alongside rocks? Thanks.
@ThePondAdvisor

Yes, absolutely you can make shelves from rocks. I will post a video about which rocks we use

If you’ve done such a video, I’d appreciate seeing the link, but I’d be interested in knowing which plants are, or might be harmful to pets? I haven’t noticed anyone refer to that topic, but before adding a likely enticing water feature in one’s yard, this would be important to know. I am aware too, of the need for safety concerns about small children, but that’s a different item to be mindful of. Thank you!

It strikes me that, a feature large enough for one’s dog to go in and out of might have certain filtering needs similar to water features used for fish? 🤔 Curious to hear about that.
@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor 2 года назад
Yes you can build a dog wash as I call them lol. Over filter these types of pond as they will bring waste in from out of the pond. Hair, dirt, plant material, it’s like a swim pond. Lots of filtration. 20% of the pond at least.
@ThePondAdvisor

Not done a video on toxic plants as it’s a big subject and people have different experiences. You can find lists on the internet but the lists are names only and not why they are a problem. I have had no issues with a lot that are listed as toxic. Stay away from big trees, or lots of waste. Walnut and horse chestnut are very bad

@@ThePondAdvisor re: toxic plants...as I can see, water hyacinth seems to be something to avoid, but I'm glad I looked this up, I know to lean towards water soldier and water lettuce instead. But also, no cardinal plant! Which I had planned to try ar some point. I do expect now, if I add any iris, to put them in the bog filter, which won't be as accessible as the barrel tub.

Can you have to much oxygen plants in a pond
@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor Год назад
Yes and No, oxygen is produced during the day. Oxygen is also used by plants at the same rate, but during the day they produce more than they use by a long way. If you have too much as the fish can’t swim, sometime the surface of the water is covered but just under the surface it’s clear. I would recommend up yo 3/4 of the pond surface covered. Anymore than that you might start having problems. If you have the correct pond circulation then oxygen levels should not be a problem (still water ponds and pools can have problems)
