It's about time I finish up the roof on the Camphouse Shed after almost 2 months of only having about half of the roof up. I'm also going to get all of the trim and siding put up to get this thing completely weather-proof and ready for final finish.
Working alone can be tough and doing it in the freezing cold is even tougher - but it's possible! Next up will be paint, final touches, and the big reveal...
Be sure to catch up on this shed build series and keep an eye out for the next one! Thanks so much for watching.
I'm currently powering the shed with this: s.zbanx.com/r/...

This is the best channel for ever! I just love your passion, honesty and humbleness. Personally why you’re not at or above a 1,000,000 subscribers is beyond me. I know building what you’re building can be trial & error. Like everything else you do, it’s machine shop quality to me. Happy New Years Travis! See you in the next installment.

With another $1,000 or more in finishing stuff (paint, etc.), having a COMPLETE 'tiny house' (minus plumbing and electric) for around $16,000 is not bad.........
@krehbein
@krehbein Год назад
Two things…. Schmoodging all that caulk is not the way to go. With a little time practicing (back wall) you would have learned to lay a nice bead of caulk. So much faster. Also there’s a company (cortex?) that makes a drill bit and plugs for pvc. Very nice.
@tnewberr
@tnewberr Год назад
Moderate tip, do the verticals first so you can get an exact width for the top boards with an even reveal to the window. 1/4" is typical. Pro tip, measure for your reveals, cut the boards, pocket hole jig together, then attach around the window. Keeps things flat, square, and even. No more crooked boards that moved due to attachment forces.

One thing to consider if you are doing a good amount of caulking is the Ryobi Battery Powered Caulk Gun. I use mine all the time, and simply does a great job. Why keep pulling the trigger, when you can empty a whole tube with one easy trigger pull. That and the speed adjustment works awesome to set your pace.

I know it's a little late now, but why not rent a bucket lift to do roof and high steep spots that are dangerous to do off ladders?

Here’s some fun facts, after the fact: Z-channel is customarily used between sheet siding, say on a gable end, where the 8’ sheet meets the angled cuts in the gable. Hardy siding should be pre-primed AND PAINTED WITH TWO COATS, before installation within 30” of grade. This includes the bottom edge AND the back. Because it will wick water and it WILL rot. Your warranty will be no good because you didn’t follow the manufacturer’s recommendations of installation. This includes siding edges up the wall. And no- nobody does this. Why no zip tape around the entry door opening? It was done around the other openings. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Your struggle with Hardiplank is an easy solve. Clamp a 2x4 to the length of your skinny cut plank until you get it in place.😊

Dude, wear a mask when working with hardie plank. That shit causes pulmonary fibrosis.
@mjpyro2458
@mjpyro2458 Год назад
Nice job but you have to wear a mask preferably a respirator when cutting hardiplank with a circular saw. It contains silica. What’s done is done though so this comment is more for people watching this thinking of working with it. If you are going to be cutting a lot, consider getting one of the drill attachments that snips the cement board and doesn’t create dust. Also, those screws you used aren’t made for hardiplank siding, they are made for cement backer board you put down under tile or on walls. Yes you can use them but Im sure they were a total pain to get started in those planks.

Caulking tip: buying a battery-powered/cordless caulk gun not only saves you from hand cramps, but it also gives more consistent results. Most major tools brands offer them (Milwaukee, Dewalt, Makita, etc) but they can be expensive if you buy from one of the big brands. If caulking isn't your full-time job, the Ryobi One+ 18V model is cheap and seems to work well. It has a dial to set the rate at which caulk is delivered, then you pull the trigger and it delivers caulk at a nice even rate. All you have to do at that point is concentrate on moving the gun at a consistent pace. I thought the idea of a cordless caulk gun was ridiculous when my carpenter friend showed me his, but now that I've used one I can't argue with the results!
@thomasfouts2700

awesome work, but that black paint on the PVC is going to crack and look like antiqued paint when the PVC expands in the summer. PVC is so dimensionally unstable ... if you butt it you'll have 1/4" gap in the winter when it contracts, and it expands like crazy in the summer months.

I spent a winter setting up Christmas decorations and we had a hook ladder like that for tall peaks, only it was made of metal and was extendable. As far as I am aware, something like that is the only way to climb high angle metal roofs safely. I remember the boss complaining about how expensive it was, I think you saved a lot making your own.

@murphymmc
@murphymmc Год назад
Installing the trim around windows that have the typical nailing fin, I do a relief cut using the table saw. The trim sits flat and tight to the sheathing. Siding looks better when the lines fit the building, not necessarily level. If "level" doesn't look level, it will always be seen. This is the time for the "fool the eye" application. You'll know. The roof ladder trick works on both sides ;-), build two. Rent or buy some scaffolding, cheap investment for preventing an event that could change your life. When caulking, keep a damp rag at hand for wipe down when you over do the bead, (cut a smaller piece off the tip= smaller, more control).
