its actually because of the korean new year... you guys might have heard them celebrating lunar new year around January... JB was born before the new year started , so according to koreans he is a 93'liner... whereas people born after the lunar new year ( like JAckson & JInyoung) are 94'liners... so JB asks JAckosn to call him hyung.

wah... i was wondering why JB insist jackson to call him hyung when they are just 1 n half mth apart. i always find those tradition hard to follow. when the koreans have to find out each other ages on the first visit so that they can do the proper greeting.

Honestly I think it's necessary too and I'm American lol simply it's because they are in Korea and it's a Korean custom. If they are in another country or speaking a different languages from Korean together which doesn't require it then that's okay.

coala fofinho In Korean culture you must speak respectfully to all of your elders even if they are only one year older than you. Koreans use the Lunar Calendar (if I'm not mistaken) which means that the new year begins sometime between January 27th and February 28. Because of this, even though Jackson and JB were born less than two months apart from each other, Jackson has to call JB 'hyung' and speak to him formally. Which of course would feel strange if you're a foreigner in Korea I'm sure. lol

i know, i'm korean myself, i'm friends with someone who's similar to jb in that i'm only a few months younger but i still have to keep the respectful tone or else they'll call me out on it lol. it's sort of annoying to me because i wish i could just talk to them like regular friends but i respect that some people take the custom seriously, sometimes it's just off-putting to me

JB can just call him by his name. It's all down to the Lunar cycle I believe and because Mark was born late 1993 him and JB count as 'same age friends' so they can address each other by name. Jacksons birthday falls just after the cycle ends so he counts as a new year. That's why Junior can call Jackson by name because they're 'same year friends'. That's how my Korean friend explained it to me anyway lol x

In Korea those who were born before the end of February are considered to be born the previous year, which is why JB is considered a 93-liner along with Mark (and why JB and Mark call each other just by names). In a similar fashion Winner's Seungyoon was born in January 1994 but is on first name basis with Mino, who was born in 1993. Same in Red Velvet, where Wendy and Seulgi are considered noonas/unnies to most 94-liners because they were born in early February of that year. Personally I think JB's argument of "keeping things strict" is a little weak as he could just allow Jackson to call him "Jaebum" but ask him to call his 93-line friends "hyungs". This kind of "pardon" takes place if someone graduated school the same year, but since Jackson didn't graduate high school in the same country, I think the lines are more blurred; though it's also an argument JB uses FOR these terms. Anyways, I stan JB, but he's REALLY conservative when it comes to culture so it can't be helped lol

Come to Indonesia. We have tests that allows student to skip a few levels in school which makes all the age system wonky. I have a senior who is two years younger than me and I have to call him "older brother" as he skipped two levels in high school. Because that is the tradition that confused me way more than Korea's age system does. But I embraced it anyway, we should all embrace traditions around the world, not point it out and compare it with other traditions. Its a tradition, respect it even if it is foreign to you.
