GOTH 101: How To Sew On A Patch

a quick tutorial on what i consider a goth essential: sewing on a patch! not everybody learns a basic whip-stitch in school, so i thought i'd do my best to help out anybody new to the subculture, or new to DIY. i'm not always the best at explaining things, so if you have any questions feel free to comment below!

every video i've seen about alt/diy patch sewing does it differently, which helps me internalize that there are no true rules here and whatever works works

i also highly recommend getting a thimble-saves a lot of wear and tear on the fingy tips

@@Vampryn I am a terror for wanting to get up and speak to a crowd so I am the opposite! I did teach for a few years but although it was very rewarding, the admin was too stressful. I like being retired!

hey, i was wondering, what am I supposed to do with the short end of the thread? I know i'm supposed to tie the knots on the long end, so is the short end supposed to just be lose? I assumed so since you didn't really explain what to do with the short end but every time I try to do this the thread ends up going through and off the needle before the first stitch is even done. also, how do you manage to make the knot twice in the same spot without ending up with 10 different ones in different places? :(

you leave it loose, and pull by the thread instead of the needle when you're pulling your stitch through so the end doesnt fall back out if that is confusing you can always tie both ends together and use that as your knot, it just wastes thread because youll be doubling up on every stitch, if it helps though it doesnt matter! when you tie the knot you hold it down with your finger while pulling it tight, if you end up with a bunch of knots and keep holding your finger on the base, eventually they will knot together hope that made sense!

I had a few patches sewn on with a machine but now I want to add some stitching like this that is more visible and adds a bit of color. Could I add to the existing stitching or is it best to remove patch and start over?

@jeffreyblack6611 if you add to the existing stitching it'll help you get a hang of hand stitching without having to pin the patch down! Plus it gives it a different look with both stitches--- but it still looks so cool!

hey!! i was wondering, how do you secure the thread to the needle? is the short end tied around itself in a knot? 1:41

i just fold it over so i can use as much thread as possible!! the more you do it the better you get at not having the thread slip back out of the needle
