I'm an Elder Goth and I don't hate the newer Alt styles. I think they're quite flattering and something unique that sets people apart from the drab "normie" fashions that are too commonplace. 🙂

I was as "goth" as I could be in the late 90s while living in a rural town and a few of my male friends wore trench coats. It was a very difficult time. My English teacher asked us to write an essay about the incident. I decided to write about the false representation and impact of industrial/goth during the incident (especially by media). I am an avid KMFDM fan and I watched a news station do a report about the band and their influence while playing a song from Nihil while showing the album art for Drug Against War. It didn't help that we also would have Quake and Unreal tournament LAN parties. Yes, I am that old. Either way, thanks for talking about how "edgy" and "murderous" persona by goths/alt subcultures don't help.

In some parts here, the US, the goth community still gets crap. I moved from a city to a rural area and people here legit would follow me around the store asking if I worshipped the devil and killed puppies (I would never hurt anyone). It came to the point where I died my hair back to my natural color and I just wear "normal" clothes. I hate it though. I want to be able to express myself the way I want. I'm going to start doing whatever I want and they can mind their own business. Sorry for the mini rant 😅

There are a lot of gatekeepers in the new “Alt” world and it’s really discouraging me from calling myself “Alternative”, I fall under the grunge subculture (90s and early 2000s not the aesthetic version mostly used today, I look more like a hobo/stoner than a tiktoker) but some people are rude as shit about my personal morals and I can’t stand it. I’m here for the music and the style that’s it, they are making it super political(the US especially). I get that some of it is based on having alternative views hence the name but please let us chill, I stay away from politics as a whole due to my family and the internet’s views because everyone is very elite about it. the bathroom TikTok's are in school bathrooms it's one of the few places you can be without getting your phone taken away by a school supervisor or interrupted by other students most of these TikTok's are made by girls and most girls bathrooms don't have many people in them especially if they're out of school most girls I know only use the school restroom if it's absolutely necessary

there are still "dress codes" in the U.S., but they aren't set to a specific outfit you have to wear, rather what you can't. christen schools have even stricter ones.

This is really like super uplifting in a weird way. I grew up always wanting to get into these styles and never had the means to back in the day because of where I lived. So it's super nice to see them resurge so hard and be able to get into them. But it's always been a worry that I wouldn't do it right or that its off beat. It's nice to hear from someone who's been in the style a long time say that not matching and not being top dollar is kind of the point. IDK it's just nice.

i only use alt for music because i listen to alternative music and i don’t really define my style or fashion with alt because i can be a certain kind of goth or be cottagecore another time i’m not just using alt for everything or using it as a way to define how i am
