Gothic 3 : Spell Review

I'm listening while at work, usually come back to playing this game like every 2-3 years

Terror is one of my most used spells. It allows you to steal stuff. It allows you to beat up and kill many enemies outside of town provided they have weak will, you just need to put them to sleep so they stop running. if you use Terror on a strong willed enemy like for example Kan, it will agro only that enemy and others around won't do anything provided you put your weapons away. Then you lure the guy outside and kill him. Terror works great combined with thieving skills too. Combined with knockout which is only 40 thieving points you can kill most any humanoid enemy without any trouble. Terror also works great if there is a room with a target you want to assassinate and there are a few guards. You can make them leave and stab the target. Telekinesis is easily S+ in the entire trilogy and in all the total conversion mods. All veteran and experienced players always have that spell on hotbar in order to see all objects that they can loot inside rooms or on the ground. It works the same way as offensive spell or ranged weapons highlight enemies from distance. Telekinesis is useful even on a pure warrior as long as you have a single scroll. You do not even need to cast it for it to be useful. Sleep is good, it also works as a way to stop someone from whatever they are doing, allows you to disarm people if they have a weapon out. Combined with knockout and sometimes pickpocket so that you can talk to any NPC to wake them up, allows you to easily win any arena fight in a single hit without actually fighting Amnesia is pretty decent as you can also agro enemies in town using failed pickpocket attempts to lure them out. Bless weapon is a great spell for a warrior. A warrior or a paladin. They try to get the max out of their blades, usually by adding self forged, sharpened, poisoned and blessed. If you happened to do that you get +30 dmg and poison dot by adding those effects together. Additionally, you ranked Fog as C+ when really it is S+. What you say about how you can use fog is actually correct and it is gamebreakingly overpowered. You cast it once when you cast it you need to stay still and make sure the animation is finished. It is one of the longer casting spells. Once it is in effect enemies can't come close to you and their projectiles will not pass the fog either, magic or arrow alike. You can easily clear any orc army or camp or city using this with rebalance on hard. It goes like this: Fog before fighting starts, then use 1 or 2 AoEs depending on what you use and how much mana you have, I managed to spam 2 flamewaves while it lasted, drink potion, recast fog. So Fog > AoE > Potion > Fog. And I was playing as a Paladin Build. I ended up with only 154 ancient knowledge and didnt invest in double damage from Fire, Water or Dark Mage traits. I did have a lot of scrolls for meteor and lightning strike, fire rain and hailstorm and I learned the ice explosion too. Fog is combat only spell. You can't use it to hide yourself when you steal or commit crimes. It is effectively a barrier spell. If you cast it too much you will need to move a little bit inside the barrier to target more people with spells as fog will also block your own vision. It makes a round barrier around you and if an NPC is locked in with you they will be able to attack you. Only person who can leave the barrier is the nameless hero. NPCs get stuck there until the spell is dispersed. If you cast it too much you also won't be able to shoot bow through it. So yeah fog spell, instead of looking for a place to confuse AI and instead of being hit by arrows and magic breaking concentration and wasting mana, just cast fog and own the game. Again, this is mainly for the hardest difficulty as on easy you can beat the game with any playstyle without any kind of investment into anything Also, Flame Wave is better than Ice Explosion DMG to Mana Cost ration so overall amount of times you can spam Flame Wave in a single sitting is always more. Flame Wave costs 90 mana and deals 400 fire dmg + fire dot. Ice Explosion deals 600 dmg at the cost of 150 mana. It is harder to unlock requiring a quest, it has no dot. It requires more ancient knowledge to learn.

transfer disease is actually a spell that aggroes enemies withouth making other enemies storm at you , for example you can use it far away to lure bandits one by one , and if you have goblin companion it will attack the enemie because you aggroed him that way you dont take damage urself at the beginning of the battle

Fog is an S rank spell. You use fog and you enemies cant do anything yet you can kill them with anything you want. What mod gives you three skeletons?

Soul Travel might be good for exploring but i've found that turning into a Meatbug the superior option for stealth, nobody challenges you on where you go and monsters/undead ignore you. And unlike Soul Travel you can turn back into a human at that location instead of your body being left behind where you cast the spell.

I love videos like these. You certainly did a good job explaining all the nuances of each spell and I applaud you for that.

Finished Gothic 1/2 for the ~10th time and finally got myself to play the third part. With all the mods it's very much enjoyable. I'm playing a mage because close combat seems to be the toughest part about Gothic 3.

Transform into dragon snapper is probably the most broken spell in early G2. You can buy it from an achemist and then wreck half the map. So saying that transformation magic is meh in all the games is just wrong.

I modded / updated G3 according to the Sinitar Gaming's guide. Flame wave works as targeted spell. However i can only summon 1 basic goblin which is too weak. Can you please pinpoint exactly what mod affect magic in your video ?

Flame and Ice Wave being modded to hit enemies around the target is just incorrect. The spells were intended to work the way they are in vanilla. The character is at the epicenter and the spells hit around him, so have to time them correctly - as shown by the animation of the spells. If it's modded to change epicenter to the targeted enemy and work like Ice Blast then that's pretty much cheating. As for Fog, works as an alternative to slow bubble for setting up aoe, not as great but works. And Meteor and Summon lightning - Lightning is just straight up better. Few enemies are resistant to it unlike Meteor, it has slightly faster cast time, eats less mana and most importantly - doesn't rag-doll enemy bodies all over the place so you don't have to run around and look for them to loot.

I can pretty much agree with you although I was sceptical at the start. I didn't even know that mods changed so many things like for example how for flame wave and ice wave your target will be the center. Good job.

Also something about summon goblin spell. Ogres and goblins are often grouped, right. Apparently, there is a faction system with alliances, or something. Basically - summon goblin - get an ogre to kill it - and it counts as a traitor and other ogres will attack it. Wonder what weird system does that. Situational but helps.

In Gothic 2, animal transformations are absolutely overpowered by the way :) You can clear the whole map without stats.

over a year later and yes I watched this whole thing. I never played this game but I have it and im currently planning to play it to really experience what its about. I typically play a paladin type character 1st time around. Is that possible in this game? like heavy armor sword and shield and a bit of magic, maybe healing, a bit of lightning or fire

there is a slight con with ice explosion (your favorite spell in the game and mine) it doesn't work on skeletons, and other such creatures that have bones. well, that's where the fire wave comes in.

Guys does anyone know which option to change in .ini so when i open inventory enemies do not attack me again? because the update pack i think changed that and now they attack me.

Hmm, I like a good knowledge video about Gothic 3, but there are a few things here that I believe you didn't address. First up, you're missing separate chapter markers for Meteor, Transfer Disease, and Poison. Think you could add those in? Flaming Sword is indeed not that great of a spell. In the original unpatched version, it would set enemies on fire every time you hit someone with it, but in the patched version, it only sets enemies on fire with every hit once they're near death, which is not very useful. If only had a flat chance of setting enemies on fire with every hit instead of being dependent on enemy HP, it would be more useful. The spell might have been more useful if the Flaming Sword's melee damage scaled with the value of your Ancient Knowledge stat. At least you get a permanent version of the Flaming Sword from Innos after you commit to his endgame path in the patched version of Gothic 3. Banish Evil also works against Demons, which are creatures of Beliar. I don't believe you mentioned that spell being effective against them, but it is. I liked Flame Wave and other "damage in a radius around the Nameless Hero" spells the way they originally were, instead of the modded versions, because you had to time it right to pull it off (for maximum damage it has to go off just before the enemy gets to melee range). The modded version looks too easy to pull off (it acts like "Summon Lightning" in that it can deal damage in a radius at a distance rather than just around the Nameless Hero) and thus too overpowered. I believe the "Bless Weapon" spell is stuck at +10 damage because it's supposed to stack with the +10 damage you get from using the "Hone Blade" skill on an edged melee weapon, along with the "Self-Forged" bonus of +10 damage for weapons you make yourself, which means a blessed, self-forged, sharpened weapon you could get up to +30 extra damage which is nothing to sneeze at. Of course, given that "Bless Weapon" is locked behind the Innos Path in the endgame, it could stand to give +20 extra damage instead of just +10 in my opinion. Telekinesis is useful in two unconventional ways. You can use it to steal items that are under observation by nearby NPCs; if you can sneak by and cast it so an item comes to you, you won't be blamed for the theft. You can also use it as an item detector of sorts; just have the spell in hand and the Nameless Hero will be able to see the name text of items further away than he would normally. This is actually useful for certain scavenger hunt quests, especially the "Explore the ruin fields of Al Shedim!" one. Animal Form really could be the worst spell in the game. The animal forms are not very strong in battle and they are lacking in HP. Sometimes it's useful to transform into a Bloodfly like you mentioned, but sometimes transforming into a Meatbug is useful for getting past hostile enemies (no one will attack you when you're in Meatbug form). Animal Form is also obsoleted by Transformation Potions and the Druid Stones you can acquire in the game. Transfer Disease is most useful against humanoid targets (humans, orcs, or even Ogres). It causes them to attack in melee more slowly, for one thing. I think it causes them to do less Endurance damage when you block their attacks, too. Poison is also useful in one way you didn't mention; targets that are poisoned (by any method) take more damage from any source, so you don't have to use a consumable for poisoning enemies or rely on a poisoned blade if you use the Poison spell. Both Poison and Transfer Disease are also useful to aggro specific enemies out of a group so you need only take them on one at a time. Terror is only useful to send specific aggroed enemies running away for a time. It only affects one enemy per casting; it would have been better as an aura spell like the unmodded "Wave" spells so you could scare away groups of enemies at a time. Anyway, this is a great video and I agree with most of your assessments. Good work here!

Do you thnik its possible to make a decent Thief based on mage (sleep spell) to help him dominate the game , combined with murder skill it would be devastating but im not sure if murder does work on wild animals like you sneak from behind and stab for instant kill if it doesnt maybe the build isnt going to be that good but like on the aspect of conquering cities silently its insane , you can rob ppl when they sleep so they have no good weapons when they fight :D

Transfer disease - i had good exipirence with the spell. you can use it to slow down fast arena fighters if you use ice lance first. makes arena fights very easy. you also can use as a single target pull for groups of enemys, even in citys.. so it can be used! For me it is at least B+ / A.

which mods do I need for things like casting waves on enemies and summoning more goblins? I just have CP1.7 and don't want to add the questpaket or anything.

Hum, I tried using "heal other" on my tamed rhino, and it wouldn't let me. The game buzzed at me for trying. I've ended up staying away from tamed animals because I feel guilty that I can't fix their health. I'm wondering if you are only able to do it with the community patch (which I haven't installed because I don't want to have to start a new game. It's my first time playing the game, at level 60). I am shocked at how little information there is about the game online. Really frustrating when I have questions or get confused about something. This video is really helpful though.

What mod did you use to show the spell damage numbers in your spell book? This would REALLY help me figure out exactly how much damage I'm doing with a pure mage versus any other builds. Edit: this is added by the Enhanced Edition 1.75 patch. The vanilla game doesn’t display spell damage numbers in the spell book or on scrolls.

Important question. When you put people to sleep and steal from them, do you get accused of theft afterward?

An overall best spell in my opinion: Tame. I would get this thing even if I wasn't a mage, it's great when you are a hunter (even more immersive) or melee

So does hail storm and rain of fire dmg stacks if you cast them repeatedly ? Or just adds to its duration

Having modded the game recently, I had to start a new adventure because the Mod that Buff Magic and Summons (Rebalance mod from the Mini Mod pack, I had to search the comment section to pinpoint which mod was it) deleted my existing save files... ironic because I needed it for my Mage! :X At least I get to experience the early additions of the game with the Quest pack and Content mods which were REALLY needed tbh! 9:20 You weren't Kidding with the Rebalance mod making Flame wave (and Ice explosions) S Rank! HOLY CRAP! Long range AOE Spells! I actually feel like a powerful mage now! So much better than a Point Blank AOE 28:49 So far I only experience an issue with Summon Goblin! (Not tested Skeletons yet) The regular Goblin will die if you travel very far away from it but Black Goblin doesn't respawn because the mod threat it like a Companion with its Blue colour name and NOT a summon, meaning if I cast the summon spell again it will only 1 Goblin! The solution for this is to go back to the location and dismiss it because it will be waiting for you like a regular companion, and don't use Teleport stones before dismiss your Goblos in general! Not sure if its gonna be the same once I upgrade my Ancient Knowledge and get a 3rd goblin as well!

i see you've got that annoying "3 FPS grass animation" bug as well. I still didn't figure out what cause it. Only complete reinstall helps

What are the level requirements for ancient knowledge for example at what AK can i start summoning 2 golbins or skeletons for example and what level is required for 3 of them ?

I'd like to disagree with you on the telekinesis. learning it (spending points) is bullshit but I thanked the gaming gods for my scroll when searching al shedim. it shows you items in a 8 yard radius or so. I would've murdered my pc if it weren't for telekinesis. I never casted it though edit: lightning bolt is worth something? tbh I thought it was just the exact same thing as ice lance and fireball but without special effect. from what I tested, it doesn't do any more damage than the other ones, also, I think you can stunlock enemies with fireball aswell, I can't really see any additional stagger with lightning bolt... edit 2: I actually found soul travel very useful, if you summon any creature (or tame an animal etc.), then use this spell, the summon will follow the ghost around, you can basically send your summon into a camp/town so everyone gathers around them and then punch in spells from the side.

Making an account to say this, I'm no pro but beast form is decent because - it lets you stunlock anything (because - running out of stamina doesn't make your attacks slower, and meaning you can deal with pretty much any single target) and it costs pretty much nothing. Of course the druid stones are better for this - no need to replace the ripperbeast one you can get very early. Yes it's slow, but it's the "green" (mana-wise) way to do it. Less plants harvested, more potions for other people who might need it. Pull through to 300 knowledge and get free mana, that's where the fun starts

Night to Day is the most op spell in the game. I thought it is a light source that is great but only work outside. But no. U basicly go "f*ck of moon" and push it away and aparantely pull the Sun.

Heal other (D), because if your team mate is on low hp just save the game and load and your teammate get 100% still you can fight. Bless weapon (A)is good maybe not with mods when we can have 300 400 dmg weapon... but mana is not the problem when we can equip Adanos ring +50 mana also other ring +10 mana and amu +20 mana sooo 100 + 50 + 20 + 10 = 180 mana on warrior so we can use it easy ;))) and i am not 100% sure... but i think also we can find 1 potion of max mana. Open Lock (A) is very good as a warrior i get knowledge around 250+. Ofc you have to learn telekinesis before Open lock but still you pay 15 points. Less than thief school. Skill open all chests (with out named). You can play with out opening any locked chest so this is A rang. Mana is not problem just pick Adanos ring +50 mana and there we go. As a warrior we collect a lot of potions mana so we can used it on this skill.

Fireball wasn't great in Gothic 2. It wasn't very mana efficient for the demage it dealt. It was mathematicaly better to use ice lance as it can be obtained in the same part of the game.

Nice Vid tho. However transforming into animals in gothic 2 was super strong. You could clear most of Khorinis with 1 Dragonsnapper scroll you bought from Ignatz literally 2min after you arrived in Khorinis.
