Mr. Pete, I worked on it 1 yr. on and off. The flywheel is cast in one piece I cut groves to simulate segments and cross drilled for studs to appear that the flywheel is segmented. The base, catwalk and stairs are not part of the plan, my imagination going wild. Thank you for posting my video seeing as you have a large following. Your father got me hooked on this hobby when I made the Stuart 5A LP class of 63 I cherish the memory and knowledge your father instilled in all his students.
Mr. Pete In order to diversify my personal collection of my model making skills I feel that my next project will be a traction engine. It will take a while to determine which one. Will let you know. Craig
Wow - Great Project - I'm impressed and envious. Anyone else here the engine talking while it was running around 6 minutes and on. I could hear it say 'who wants air, who wants air, who wants air...... Thanks again Rod
Worked on it 1 yr. on and off. I have a wonderful shop to fabricate my models this one was relatively easy. Have you seen video of Corliss and Fire Engine?
That is a joy to behold. Tubelcain (Mr Pete 222) mentioned about this so had to come look and enjoy. Countless hours of work - exquisite, and congrats on the build.
wow. Simply, WOW. I can do nothing but imagine this being a full scale engine and walking around it in all its glory. Awesome work, Craig! Thanks for sharing!
You can thank Tubelcain the next time you talk to him, for recommending this video. The engine is definitely impressive and appears to be beautifully done, congratulations on the fantastic build!!
That is a thing of beauty. A master work. It made me think back to my youth (endlessly) playing with an erector set with friends and one of the projects was a walking beam engine.
I work at The Henry Ford Museum. We have a Corliss and a Beam Engine like this one. Your work is amazing. I love to watch these miniatures working. The detail is outstanding.
Charlie Horgan Charlie thank you for your comments on my Gothic beam engine. The castings and plans were developed by an individual by the name of Robert Gail. He lived near the museum and observed many times in his younger days when it was parked outside. At some time. He gained permission to measure the engine in order to create a 1 inch scale model. My wife and I have visited the Henry Ford Museum and observed the Gothic beam engine in full size. I know the complete history of the original engine. The model you viewed on RU-vid took me approximately two years to complete I am currently engaged in making other models however I am 72 years old and I have often thought that upon my death I would like to possibly see the model that I built exhibited at the Henry Ford along with the full size engine. View my other models on RU-vid unter Brigitte Trapp It would really be nice to speak with you. I would really enjoy a conversation with someone who works at the museum. Craig Stevens
The thrill is never gone. Once I completed the model the real thrill was in the buffing, nickel plating, painting, and re-assembly of the model unfortunately many model makers stop when the model is simply running. They have missed all the final details of the work my inspiration comes from the late John McDevitt and Gene Allen both my Mentors and dear friends. Craig Stevens
Well that piece is an awesome work of love and could easily be a museum piece. I've seen old beam engines in museums but they are never running. It's cool to get to see a model of one running with all of it's intricacies.
awesome craftsmanship! mr pete referred me to this and i am in utter awe to how much detail you have put into this. thanks for sharing, and i will subscribe
Thank you, I was Mr. pete's fathers student class of 63 he was a great teacher. My finale machine shop project my senior year was a stuart 5a vertical steam engine. Since then i been hooked.
I purchased my castings from Kohl’s power models approximately 15 years ago. They are no longer in business. However a steam buddy of mine named Jeff Lehn has a set of castings his phone number is 724-931-0580 Jeff is a very nice person and very honorable contact him and if you have any further questions about the project you can call me directly on my wife’s iPhone. The project is not for the uninitiated. You will need a good lathe and milling machine. If you need to contact me please call me back at 818-808-3956 good luck Pete
WOW - what a great job. It would be great to see this at a show some time. Thanks for posting the video and thanks to Mr. Pete222 for his recommendation.
Magnificent job there. Thank you very much for sharing this. You should have a brass plate made noting who built it because that is a very beautiful piece of work there. Isn't it funny how things always take 2 - 4 times more effort and time than you "think" they will. :)

Beauty! How many hours are invested here? Also, I didn't catch the segmented parts on the flywheel, are they part of the kit , or your own concoction? Thanks for the video.

Fabulous! The valve mechanism is quite intriguing. Thank you, Mr. Stevens for sharing! (BTW my walking beam engine does not compare except for the basic design. Wonder if there is any problem with the piston connecting rod rocking like on mine)
There may be some play in the cross links. When I ran it on a temporary base all was perfect. However the stone base is hollow and is possibly resonating any slight imperfection. I will probably never try to find the problem. I have never made a perfect model. I do not think anyone has, one must accept what degree of imperfection one is ready to accept in his work. If you do not then you will drive yourself nuts. But then you have to be a little nuts to be in this hobby anyway. Craig
Dear David, There exist scale model plans available from the "Henry Ford Gothic Steam Engine"? if it can Metric if not in Inch. Are they for sale, or are they free? Greetings Frank Bohez By the way amazing work what you do
Did you make the castings also or is this a kit? It's beautiful! I'm glad mrpete sent me here, I just subbed and hope you keep making videos. I'm sure we'd all like to watch if you filmed yourself milling and building these things.
mrpete222 was right. Well worth watching this video. Must take the patience of a Saint to build something like this. How many man hours do you think you have into this project?

Hi Craig, I am looking for scale model plans from the Henry Ford Gothic Beam Engine, do they also exist in Metric sizes? or in Inches and are they free or should I buy them I intend to design a 3D Printed Model of this. With best regards. by the way astonishingly handsome work from you Frank Bohez
