Gotta appreciate the fact that he will go through and do everything in a game, sometimes several times over, no matter how hard it is, just to see everything a game has to offer so he can give a complete review of the game.
I can highly agree with that he's not just doing the story and boom done he goes over everything to give each game a chance to see if any part of it is good

I hate to be that guy, but for some reason he never mentioned that you unlock the Tiny Chao Garden (the exact same one from Sonic Advance 1) at some point. It’s not a great reward and you definitely unlock it long before the final “reward” of playing as Amy, but still, I don’t think he even mentioned the Tiny Chao Garden in his first Sonic Advance video for some reason.
TheLonelyGoomba is like that one friend you stopped keeping contact, who you have fond memories of, though you drifted apart from due to the passage of time or whatever, yet you somehow keep running into each other randomly, but you hesitate to rekindle the friendship because they said Sonic Advance 1 is better than Sonic Advance 2-- which is just a crime against humanity, really, how dare they. 😤 (Kidding, of course. I've been subscribed to this funny little mushroom man for years.)
@@LupinticDream actually I do prefer Sonic advance 1 over Sonic advance 2 as well. 😅 I just like the simplicity of the first advance game and don't like the running bosses in the 2nd Sonic advance honestly. I do like all the Sonic advance games though.
Since my first experience with Sonic was Sonic Flash (and Mario Bros in Sonic World), I really want to give the Advance games a proper try now, they look pretty cool.
10:57 While the Lonely Goomba views the Techno Bass boss fight as one of the more relaxed fights, it's by far the most hated boss fight in the Sonic Advance 2 speedrun community because the boss fight is entirely RNG.
Imagine being the kid with Sonic Advance 2 who inevitably hears some schoolyard rumor about being able to unlock Amy and is then crushed by how not worth unlocking she is outside that initial excitement of actually accomplishing it.
Sonic Advance 2 might honestly be one of my favorite 2d Sonic games. I like the speed you can achieve and the many playable characters. His first Sonic Advance video inspired me to go back to this game and collect all chaos emeralds as every character. I never wanna do that ever again
Same actually... but since you could connect it to Sonic Adventure 2 Battle it was awesome. Had lots of chaos with SS Stats. I dont regret it, but only becouse of SA2B
LonelyGoomba, you have earned my respect for taking the time and making the effort to 100% this game. Getting the Chaos Emeralds in this game is a *NIGHTMARE.* As a kid, I thought this game was even better than the first. But like you said, once the spectacle of speed wore off, the game isn’t that great. At least with Sonic Rush you need to not only manually activate the boost, but build it up to even use it in the first place. They sacrificed level design for speed. Most of the game was just holding right on the control pad. It’s not awful but it is a step down from the first game. I felt like I was playing a lost Genesis sequel playing the first one. And I’m glad we all agree on getting the Chaos Emeralds. It is NOT WORTH IT. You did that for us and I appreciate that. Just……brace yourself for the sequel’s method. Don’t ask, just mentally prep yourself. You rock, Goomba.
Now I realize I've probably never beaten the game 100%. I think I kinda gave up getting the Chaos Emeralds around the Ice level or the Techno level. I remember what I found most frustrating was having to find a path to get all Special Rings in a level in one go, and that's only so you'd get to the Special Stage. If you failed the Special Stage, then you had no choice but restart and collect the Special Rings through the level all over again. I remember having to write my own walk-throughs to figure out the location of each Special Ring and how to get them in one run. That's also frustrating, because the assets in each level look virtually all the same so it felt difficult to spot any kind of landmark. All of this probably lost my motivation to finish the game. I also remember at some point the D-Pad of my GBA (the first model) began malfunctioning because there was a rip in the rubber membrane behind. I suspect this game had something to do with it, with all that time spent pressing the D-Pad to the right. Kudos to Lonely Goomba for his determination so he could make this video.
Goomba's been on RU-vid for almost 10 years now and I've been around watching Goomba since around 8 years when you had like 30k subs. Glad you're back with consistent uploads these last few months.
20:25 - I take offense to this; I was trying to unlock Shadow! 😝 Anyway, finally got around to watching this. Bosses are very subjective and generally frowned upon but I love them as you can't cheese them (except for using Cream). And Sky Canyon's boss is the best. The hand will only insta-kill you if it gets a direct hit. Love the speed this game brings and feels like what a Sonic game should be. However, like you said, this really doesn't work well with the special rings and I also had to use a guide. Overall, good video. But can I ask what emulator are you using to record this? The frame rate was pretty rough here.

The nostalgia! I loved this game as a kid. That being said I never once once saw the special stages until today, and by extension never saw the final level
Man this video takes me back. I REALLY love this game. In fact, I love all the sonic advance games so much. It’s basically what sonic is to me Ngl. I really hope they give the advance trilogy the origins treatment and bring it back with a whole bunch of improvements some day. Well, with less glitches of course
Sonic Advance 2 was one of my favorite GBA games growing up! I loved playing through the various zones and achieving very fast speeds with the various characters. Music Plant is definitely one of my favorite zones in the game. That said, I never got any of the Chaos Emeralds with any of the characters... because of how bleeding hard it is to get to the special stages... I only beat the game as Cream the Rabbit.
I literally had an official strategy guide book for Sonic Advance 2 (remember going to book stores for those?) and still hadn’t even gotten a single Chaos Emerald. I at least got one or two accidentally in Advance 1 and 3, but as for 2, simply reading about the locations of the emblems doesn’t translate to actually finding them, AT ALL. For better or worse, Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Adventure DX taught me not to become a hardcore completionist and touch grass or get a job (where the grind will at least result in a steady income) once a game stops being fun and asks too much of me. Sonic Advance 2 is the best when you’re casually playing it for the thrill of going fast, but not so much when you’re trying to unlock the (admittedly-cool-looking) final battle.
Never played the handheld Sonic games before, but this looks like a solid one! At least, for playing as Sonic. The level design does look like it focuses on him, which makes sense as he is the title character, but including multiple characters with unique abilities and not having the level designs reflect that is a shame. Oh well, can’t ask too much of the game I suppose. Great video, Goomba! :)

I feel as i did play with no guide back in day, that tails and others are great for learning the levels and location of the star rings. as you can go back with flying and climbing, sonic is a you now know them now do it in one try myself, it's my personal favorite advanced games. i still hate sonic advanced one special stages the most out of the whole sonic series the depth perception just sucks imo.
Same here. I wasn't going to go through that trouble until I realized that's how you unlock Amy. I was actually really disappointed when she didn't play like the first Sonic Advance.

I gotta appreciate that there are so many subtle details put into these videos that people may never notice, but it brings the quality up to 11. For instance, you (or someone you commissioned) redrew the boss just to flash it for 1 second at 10:06.
@ 9:50 If the hand shakes around before slapping out, that's when it can kill you it one hit. Although, the boss is likely to spend a fair amount of time off screen, so it's best not to risk it. That being said, other than the massive chore that is getting into the special stage, and the fact you are expected to do it on every single character for all 7 emeralds too, the worst part of Sonic Advance 2 is easily the bosses. They just aren't very fun, and the cliché boss rush where you have to fight them all again successively at the end of the game is just adding insult to injury.

Despite the similarities in level design, and the terrible chaos emerald collection, I still love this game to death. Though honestly, I recommend anyone just look up the correct path for the special rings on youtube. No one will judge you. Back in the day, kids were expected to pour hours into the game to unlock the secrets because they didn't have many other options anyway.
I wanna bring up that there were dog tags in the pit of shame. Implying that the lonely goomba is ashamed of working for bowser, or had another, darker military history.
Woo! the Sonic Advance 2 video is here! I remember struggling to play this game on a beat-up Gameboy advance original with no back light. Playing Pokémon or Kirby was ok but with how fast you go in SA2 it was essentially impossible! Looking forward to finishing the trilogy with you Gomba!
Great video again Goomba! Your style is funny and consistent, and you do a good job on describing and showing when the game's fun and when its not, critiquing all the important aspects, etc. I always click as soon as I see an upload. I was remembering this game fondly until you started talking about the special stage rings. I completely forgot about them, they really did suck hard. They are way too strict and spread out for a race-track game like Sonic. I remember trying to follow bland, black 'n white .txt guides on GameFAQs to the LETTER in order to get those rings. Man it is so true how we only remember the good parts of old games.
This game was a part of my childhood, cuz I didn't have an original game boy advance (The closest i got was a gameboy advance SP), back in my day. the Nintendo DS was 100% Backwards Compatible with Gameboy advance games. But i didnt have any nintendo DS games except for the guitar hero on tour games i got.
You can cheese bosses after you get Cream, and by cheesing them, I mean you can repeatedly throw Cheese the chao at the bosses whilst staying out of the boss attack range
This game certainly has the opposite problem of the first game. It's practically made for Sonic's gameplay, yet his friends are treated even more like an afterthought. Also, the reward for 100% completion doesn't seem worth it. By the way, I love how the more recent videos have the Patreon lists mimic the style of the credits of the game you reviewed!
The main difference between characters is really just the trick systems. Knuckles being a prime example because his is one of the more difficult ones to grasp. Tails also for example, his forward trick is a short hop and doesn’t go as far as sonics, making you undershoot gaps you normally would make as sonic. Cream overall has a really forgiving trick system to make jumps easier. Amy is just a better sonic in my opinion.
quite a few games hide stuff like levels or even bosses behind completion marks. Jet Force gemini is probably the most notorious offender. Forcing the player to collect a wide variety of animal friends that are able to get themself killed like literally making it so that you HAVE to replay a level over and over to figure out how to make them dumb thing not have it's head shot off by a giant ant.
The specific bouncing off objects animation and the sprites from being shot out of the wind pipe things in Music Plant, plus the slip-sliding animations in the Ice Paradise are all trying to mimick Ristar. Which is another Sega mascot and is almost the antithesis of Sonic in the most beautiful way possible. Oh, also the Egg Utopia boss seems to be heavily influenced by the 4th boss in Gunstar Heroes, another Sega Treasure. lol But this is one of my favorite Sonic games for that very reason. The Dimps team who worked on this game obviously really cared for the Genesis era as it tries real hard to be a real love letter to that too, while also trying to "feel" like it was made with a SNES game's design-philosophy... Out of hopes Nintendo fans would pick it up easier? As in an interview, Izuka explains "he knew Sonic on a Nintendo console had to feel different." Or something along those lines... Dykgaming, for sources. But yeah. Lol 👍 I think it succeeds in what it tries to be... For sure. And I really like how the Adventure 2 vibes are nicely thrown in there as well... Everything overall has a nice flow. Some levels can be more a pain in the ass than others, and man, this trilogy had me throwing my GBA across the room rage-quitting (batteries popping out and all) as a kid, ngl. Especially cuz it's style just kept me coming back for more each time because I loved Sonic that much as a kid, but I digress. I like to re-experience them more now on the SNES classic. At least this way with save states I feel I have more of a chance to "get good" at the games before getting a game over and burning myself out like back then. All in all, as a Sonic fan. 9/10. Coulda been a bit better. A nice love letter. I work for IGN now, apparently. I joke-
If the Advance games ever get a re-release collection, they're definitely going to need some tweaks to iron out their bigger problems. Namely, the screen should be zoomed out a bit and given widescreen support, and they should change how you get into special stages to make it less tedious. Keep in the option to use lives as well, something Sonic Origins made a big mistake regarding. (If you don't know about Advance 3, I guess this is your spoiler warning right now.) Advance - I'd say just emulate how Sonic 1 did it. If you can hold onto 50 rings until the end of the level, you can jump into a giant ring to play a special stage. Convert the Special Stage Springs into a new minigame you can play to earn bonuses, like rings or 1-ups or something. Advance 2 - Convert the Special Rings into Red Star Rings that you keep forever when you grab them, and then simply make entering the special stage about crossing the finish line at the end of the level at full speed. The Red Star Rings could even unlock concept art or something. Advance 3 - The Chao Rescue system can stay as something else to do, but let the player find the keys in the levels without needing to find all the Chao first. Similar to Red Star Rings, the Chao could unlock concept art or something when you collect them. Hell, flesh it out into a proper Chao Garden system where you can take care of them and partake in new minigames with them.
As someone who, for the life of himself, couldn't get into the Sonic Games when they went 'Three Dimensional', the 'Advance' games were a godsend. I did eventually get more comfortable with the more recent titles and their 3D scenic platforms...but still not nearly as much with the original 2D sprite games.
The Advance and Rush games all have an easy mode that cuts down the bosses hp making them a little less of a drag, wonder if they felt obligated to lift the 8 hits thing from the classics. I also think it tweaks some of the cheaper enemy placements like WallShark but don't quote me on that.
