Imagine your franchise player leaving for free, after telling everyone until the last moment that he wanted to stay. Tavares left the Islanders empty-handed. I understand their frustration

My god people it’s not that he left! It’s how he left! All last year he’s saying how badly he wants to stay and doesn’t want management to trade him even though we could’ve gotten a kings ransom since we weren’t going anywhere. So offseason comes and we lose him for nothing after years of saying how much he wanted to stay. I think you guys would be pissed if your star player did that too.

I'm an Islander fan and i'm happy he's home, it was the right thing to do. He was my idol growing up. He shouldn't have miss led the fans though. I've been a Leafs fan for all my life and I like Tavares on our team. But the islanders fans are well within their rights to boo him. They had to give up an amazing player for nothing. But I think in the end they are better off for it because their team went from nothing to the playoffs this year. The leafs won't go anywhere without a better defense, a good power forward and some grit. I hate to say it but until then I don't see a cup in our future.

If you're going to leave the organization, tell them so they can trade you for something good. Request that you want to be traded to Toronto. Toronto gets Tavares, Islanders get some picks and decent prospects/players. Everybody wins. Don't know why it was hard to just tell that you're leaving/signing somewhere else and leave the team you called home out on the dust.

Islanders could have kept Tavares, all they needed to do was make this change in year 5. Not year 9

I honestly think that Tavares did at some point want to stay, but when the opportunity presented itself, he chose to play for the team that he grew up cheering for.
