James Mikami This song just made him famous for sometime then people start forgetting about him, i mean it's his only song that passed more than 100m views but the other songs, i don't think so.
Clorox bleach "only song that passed 100 million" is 10 million views not enough to be considered popular. I promise you that 4 out of 5 people who listen to music know who Gotye is. Like chill out, he's not some under ground indie artist; he's one of the most mainstream out there.
i feel like most people, like "one hit wonders," is that their most famous song is their best song. Somebody that I used to Know is good, but Gotye's the kind of guy where if you listen to more of his stuff it's even BETTER than what he's known for. i love the artistic-ness, effort, and meaning in his songs
@Taylor Holloway i feel like it's still his stage name though. he's the main creator of the songs, so i'm referencing him by the name he goes by when he makes/publishes them
I agree. Gotye, Adam Young, Regina Spektor, and The Paper Kites are probably the only music artists I personally know of that really understand what the title means.
@@morriscat3 Agree 100% which is why there probably shouldn't be a music video for it; removes the context of the song whilst presenting simultaneously
Seventeen seconds and I'm over it Ready for the disconnect Putting on a brave face Trying not to listen To the voices in the back of my head But it's alright now (It's a distant memory baby) Alright now (You know you should just let it go) Some feelings have a habit of persisting Even though you wouldn't let it show Wearing me out (All this) Hanging around (It just starts) Getting me down (Till I'm just) Looking for an easy way out Brain-dead from boredom I'm led to distraction Scratching the surface of life Nothing really happens But it's easy to keep busy When you tell yourself you're traveling right But it's alright now (Was it really worth it baby?) Alright now (Was it just a waste of time?) Keep on second-guessing Use my memory like a weapon On everything I try Wearing me out (All this) Hanging around (It just starts) Getting me down (Till I'm just) Looking for an easy way out Wearing me out (But it's alright now) Hanging around (Alright now) Getting me down (But it's alright now) Looking for an easy way out Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Walter Andre De Backer
Gotye if you ever read this, let me explain why I think this is brilliant: I interpret the length of the song as life, it's too short. Your movement is tucked as if it's your duty, and not your own will. The days start to blend in and the fire could be the the build-up inside that at the end makes you say "Screw this, I'm taking the easy way out."
I love the concept of his videos. He seems like a person who has been through/is going through some rough times and he expresses himself via the art of music. Love it.

I've found that, while I'm not always crazy about some of his songs, I always adore the music videos, and in effect, almost always end up loving the music because of it.
People are always saying this guy dropped 1 song and vanished and I don’t believe any statement in this world pisses me off more bc they’re all missing out on these masterpieces.
The (sometimes....well...most of the time) crippling, dull, destructive monotony of modern life and existence. Gotye hits the nail on the head again :D This man's an underdog prodigy
I remember a couple years ago when I was absolutely obsessed with Gotye and then for some reason I stopped listening to him. So glad I found him again ")

The cat always gets me. Still years later this is one of the best music videos I've seen. It's totally simple in concept but flawless in execution and I bet it wasn't easy to film and edit. Also am I the only person to note that if you came here straight from Somebody You Used To Know, he's getting naked again. Maybe he likes it?
Happy to see I wasn't the only one who noticed the similarity between this and the Beatles Day Tripper. ('She was a day tripper - she took the easy way out") You start humming the one you end up humming the other. Bizarre ear worm
Fame isn't something a talented person "deserves" or ideally should strive for. The expression of the art in the chosen medium is its own reward. I hope that people don't think that fame is something that somehow tallies how "good" something is. I'm saying this because lots of comments in Gotye's music videos say "oh, why isn't he more famous?" and I think that's kind of.. a disappointing mindset? idk, just me?
Yeah. Fame if need be should only befall artists years after they’re gone. In today’s climate it’s a drug, a really bad one, that has you spiraling into more of a contractor than an artist. It lulls talent and artistry through market mechanics blowing up ego. It takes an intelligent being who carries gratitude for their art and talent to receive such fame and be like nah I’m good with a band and a smaller audience. I think art is more community work in the way that it’s about keeping the gift in motion and giving it back, and receiving the actual abundance in the reward you mention. commercial success is nice but it doesn’t satisfy the soul, it irks it. Commenting two years later but what is time haha
@@FSAPOJake I think it's a little bit of both. When you have chronic depression, it isn't always there, but there's episodes, it can stay for months and can lead to suicidal thoughts if it gets that bad. During these depressive episodes, you feel like the walking dead. You get no lasting joy out of things you actually like, nothing feels worth doing because it feels like there's no point. You feel like you're just going in circles, going through the motions, just to be back in the same spot you never moved from. It feels like a never-ending routine that you just want to be free from, and for some, that idea of freedom may include suicide. For others it might be running away, or some sort of drastic life change... or just sleeping life away until the depression wanes. All can seem like easy ways out.
One of the things I love about Gotye is that he bothers with real music videos when most of the industry only really make a token stab at them these days or dismiss them as irrelevant. His always tell a real story.
Geesh man, this music just never does and never will get old. This song definitely explains how life is just one hell of a handful. I can easily picture Gotye bring a movie actor too.
rumor has it if you only watch half of this video and wait 7 days, Gotye turns up to your house in the rain and yells "you didn't have to cut me off" though your bedroom window.
I remember watching this over and over when I was just a little kid who didn't know any English. I just liked the music, but couldn't understand the meaning of the lyrics and the video was the only thing I could suppose it was about... and damn, I always found it so sad, I still remember my thoughts being always like "I just don't want to end like this guy"
+pigammon I don't want him to rush his work, though. But there's a fourth album being worked on, and I predict the first single will be released July 2017 at the latest.
smart Idea but it wouldnt work because each scene has something different and you cant change scenes if its 360 there would be no way to hide the changes
I felt this, i used to work at walmart, and when covid hit, the days began to blend, my bosses kept giving me more than i could handle, then i couldnt sleep, too worried id lose my job because i was the workhorse i was being burnt out while the rest of my team was fine no matter what, i left walmart, and im ok now
Everyone likes somebody I used to know but I feel like this video is one of the better ones I have seen. Maybe because it gives off the stop motion feel. I found this song before the other one. Love the sound. Was looking up artists with the same feel as the vines/caged elephant/ect. This song hit all my marks
You can think this music video is funny and all, but holy fuck is it dark to the point that it's scary. The majority of the middle-class has such a mundane schedule and it drives people insane. Maybe not to the house burning down, though it's a perfect metaphor. The cat burning up was a little too far, but maybe that's the point. Gotye is a fucking genius. I'd easily argue that this song is better than Somebody That I Used To Know.
Atheists Are Actually Theists. Proof? "A Theist". I Rest My Case. It's definitely better than somebody that I used to know, it's a perfect metaphor for how someone's mind starts to go crazy doing the same thing every single day, the fire slowly burns away at the house until everything is chaos and he's still calm about everything, almost resigned to his routine and his unhappiness with it
every time i watch it i notice something else new and different, makes me laugh. so creative, so well done. i love gotye, one of the best performers i've ever seen.
It saddens me to think that he felt or feels this way. Artists have such a temperament that magnifies every emotion and causes them to lead with a heavy heart. It truly shows what it takes to be such a mastermind.
Couldn't be more satisfied :) Spotlight on Gotye everyone ! As I knew it, here finally is some brother/son from another mother of Pete Gabriel. After I bought your album I was very keen about your way to put that into video... Eyes wide open stunned me, and I guessed there's something coming up... I never ever would have imagined to depict Easy way out like that, but it's totally bang on ! :D All together with those tiny bits of comic guitar... just right. I LOVE IT ! Well, the message still made it to my brain ;)
I really really love the part where his newspaper is on fire and he just starts reading a little farther from that end. It's such a perfect metaphor for how people don't think long-term.
Actually if you think about it, most music that is famous, popular and played on the radio is mostly about love, feelings and emotions, and relationships and stuff like that. So once in a while a great artist that comes along that isn't about feelings and what not that has more controversial lyrics gets guess what? Yeah, they're put on the back burner(but not always like Pink Floyd for example) while more "family friendly" or "P.C." songs get put out in the spotlight. Sorry but it's mostly true.
Here I am, watching it from 2024. This song with this video is so much true of our routine lives where nothing changes day by day and nothing seems to have any meaning or value. When burning it all down seems the only way out.
