Moulin Rouge is one of my favorite movies and there’s plenty of lovely scenes to paint!

To be completely~ fair, even as an author, there are a handful of movies I prefer over the book originals. (I'm also slowly going through and finding the old versions of Pride & Prejudice myself, seeing how different editions of them focus on different aspects of the story. I enjoy the 2005 one and the 1995 BBC mini series versions the most, so far.)

My go-to for processing any media i have a lot of feelings about is to do fanart of it. It's how I got into art and it's my go-to comfort art to this day~ Whenever I'm sad/stressed/just struggling to get art out I'll just pick a screenshot from something I like and paint it.

I love that scene in P&P!! My next favorite is the one where he walks through the mist/fog

Pride and Prejudice is one of those cases where the movie really managed to capture the essence of the story while adding a ton in atmosphere and emotion that a book doesn't have access to. I think it's one of the few examples that show why people want to make movies about books in the first place, if it's done well then it adds so much to the whole experience.

The Princess Bride has some really breathtaking visuals, and infinite watchability.

I find it so interesting that cinema scenes are a more daunting paint for you than other references, I am the exact opposite! When I have difficulty painting or drawing, turning on a favorite show or movie is a easy way to be inspired to make something, I think having an emotional connection to the characters/story makes it easier to emotionally invest myself in the piece. I really need my emotions to be in the art otherwise I get too in my head. Beautiful painting, love the colors and tones of his skin and the over all mood you got with the underpainting!!!!

Pride and Prejudice is one of my all time favorite movies 😭 best believe i will be going and rewatching it after this video. As far as suggestions, I feel like any scene from Anastasia the animated movie would be so interesting for you to paint. The movie itself is visually stunning

I grew up seeing snippets of the movie (it’s my grandmother’s favorite) and then I read the book in high school. I love it, and honestly liked Mr.Darcy just as much by the end of it. He still read as possibly a bit romantically awkward (the proposal was so terrible!) and their banter was very fun and then there eventual romance was truly heartwarming to read. I loved their walks tbh

I do love the tones and colours of this one. I'd second K Antigua in saying Wes Anderson's films have some wonderfully tempmpting painterly scenes. I'd also recommend seeing The French Dispatch if you haven't already seen it because a) the visuals are to die for and I'm sure you'd find many tempting scenes to paint and b) it's just an utterly charming, quirky film.

Great idea for a series! I’ve been thinking of trying movie scenes to work on portrait painting and improving how I paint lighting. It would be neat to see some of your color mixing along with the painting process.

This is one of my favorite movies, as well as one of the best movie adaptations of the original novel. I have very little experience with gouache but it looks like so much fun to work with. I like how your underpainting really added some somberness to the finished look. The black bars at the end were a great idea. It really helped your colors stand out. As for movie suggestions The Fall is visually amazing. Any Ghibli film would also be a great pick. I'm partial to The Last Unicorn or Everafter.

I would LOVE to see more vids for this series 😍😍 I think an animated movie (Howl, as you mentioned, or something else) would be super interesting to see in your style! I think a relatively simple animation might give more space for interpretation, that would be very cool to see! Other movie thoughts: les mis? 👀 or Narnia?💕

My sister and mom are more into Pride and Prejudice, I haven’t read the book or watched any adaptations, but this was cool. My favorite movie in terms of cinematography is The Empire Strikes Back with the vast snowy wastes of Hoth, the contrasting colors of the carbonite chamber in Cloud City, the wide range of sky colors in Bespin, the spooky atmosphere of Dagobah... it’s great.

Fun to mention maybe: I loved these scenes in the rain so much too, so I painted it just a few seconds before this very scene - also in Gouache. It's scary to paint those scenes, yes but how precious those paintings become to oneself.

The Theory of Everything is a very beautiful and atmospheric film, you could also pause that one at any time and have an amazing scene to paint!

I am sooo excited for this series! I have specifically, searched up 'painting film scenes' before in hopes to find videos like this! So what better than to watch one of my favourite artists doing it!!

Any screenshot of any Ghibil movies would be perfect. But now I can say that a whole scenery of Joker is very interesting. Not only because of an amazing actor but the play of colours really inspired me. Maybe I will remember more movies that I would like to paint.

This is beautifully recreated. And I too am scared to use non jelly gauche. I think the blue under wash was a great addition and gives this scene the justice it needed.

i've been stalling my own movie scene painting project and schindler's list is one i'm excited to paint from- because it's black and white and has some really visually intriguing scenes. can't wait to see more in this series! (ps i love the crooked face)

Beautiful. Love this scene and movie sooo much. Another two movies I find visually pleasing are Jane Eyre (2011) and Last of the Mohicans (with Daniel Day Lewis).

My absolute favourite film is The Fall from 2006 with Lee Pace. The story is intricate and heartbreaking, the visuals breathtaking. There's almost no CGI in it but they visited all these actual places across the world, and it's just amazing. I high key recommend giving it a watch!

I really love all the colours used in this, I love how they’re blended and how they work together in this. As for the crookedness, I think it’s stuff like that that really give a piece character sometimes. It’d be great if we could all do things perfectly, but that’s not realistic for everybody and if you try to obsess on getting everything “perfect” I think you kind of miss the point of art. Expression should be freeing, I know how it feels getting frustrated at a painting for hours because it’s just not turning out how I wanted it to, but if I were to just let go and let myself just *be* without any expectations, my art is so much better for it!

Every time this comes on TV (even though I own the film) my husband comments, “You’re going to watch that again!?”. And yes…I do. Maybe he could learn a little something 😂, because what woman doesn’t want to hear : You have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on. Love your painting of this scene 💙.

Stunning work! I really enjoy your videos. My suggestions would probably be Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (there’s a bit where they pick up Joan of Arc and Keanu has his hand reaching out and yeah. And the lighting always seems so soft which I guess why it sticks in my head) , Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind (the end where they’re on the stairs, saying goodbye perhaps?) and The Lost Boys (probably when they’ve invited Michael to their hideout? The set is just wonderful and the colours just draw the eye I guess?). There’s just something about those films that made them jump to mind. Anyway. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work with us!

its more of a landscape oriented piece, but My Octopus Teacher is a great one for unusual environments!!! such a lovely story too watership down (1978) is also a beautiful movie too (one of my favs!) and crimson peak has some really fun color scenes and is just a neat movie in general OH! and the last unicorn. very very nice anywhere you pause (for the most part) those are what comes to mind right now!

I for one love period Movies so you can paint as many period Movies as you want and I will continue to watch 💖💖 I love the movie and I think the black wide screen lines did a perfect affect. I was thinking about doing some paintings of the show Bridgeton.

Personally, I like Del Toro movies (such as Shape of Water or Pan's Labyrinth) a lot when I want to paint screen captures. They're visually stunning and I learned a lot from them about composition.

You really captured the mood of the scene marvelously! I love the outcome! And I don't mind the slightly uneven mouth/nose/chin line at all. I came here for three reasons: 1. I'm a subscriber and was notified about the video. 😁 2. I'm always on the lookout for gouache ideas for my sketchbook. And 3. I, too, love "Pride and Prejudice". I was a bit surprised how "watercolourly" you used the gouache. I like using gouache for its opaqueness. But your choice is exactly right for this scene. So thank you for sharing! With delight I heard that you intend to dedicate your whole sketchbook to such screenshots. I'm very much looking foward to it. As for "Pride and Prejudice": I prefer the 1995 version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, mainly because I like the actors much better, but also because I prefer their interpretation of the original novel. And yes, I, too, enjoy the film (1995) more than the novel, exactly because of the wonderful actors Ehle and Firth. I love the kind, loving, intelligent Lizzy and the many layers of Darcy.

I would LOOOOVE this as a series to see how another artist handles this, and I feel you captured the atmosphere and feel of this shot so beautifully!! I used to do this all the time when I was trying to learn visual storytelling to make comics, and I'd totally love to pass on my favorites that I studied from to you if you ever wanna try them which pretty much encompasses: All things shot by Roger Deakins! I filled out sketchbooks studying No Country for Old Men and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and maybe there would be a shot in them that you'd find pretty to paint, as well! If you're up for a series, too, the urge to do these studies again was recently reawoken by Midnight Mass-- Some of the prettiest shots and compositions I've seen in a WHILE in that thing, though I've yet to get around to painting anything from it yet ;-; Also super sorry for the long comment, but wanted to add that there is a website called Evan E Richards that I used at the time that is FULL of gorgeous screenshots of gorgeous films-- thought I'd pass that on to you as well if you hadn't seen it if it would be of interest or inspiration :D

pride and prejudice 2005 is my comfort movie as well and can i just say you absolutely nailed the emotional message of this scene - the colors and the texture are so lovely and his expression is just!!!!!!!!! so good!!!! ive also really wanted to paint screenshots from my favorite movies as well but it can be so daunting like you said. really love what you did here. just absolutely lovely. really looking forward to this series

oh this is going to be a fun series, if your looking for a movie with a lot of great atmospheric shots Master and Commander would be a wonderful movie to take a screenshot from, there is a good range of subject matter from Galapagos island landscapes to some awesome character shots, The Power of The Dog on Netflix also has amazing scenery

This piece is wonderful, I love the blue undertone and overall feeling from this painting. Some of my favorite movies are Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, and Legend (1985). I love rewatching those films and there’s so many scenes that stand out to me from them.

Your videos are amazing, and have been such a therapeutic thing in this past year for me to watch and learn. I love Howls Castle oh my goodness... and Pride and Prejudice.. nostaligic to me. I would love to see a Spirited Away scene. most of Toshio Suzuki's movies are breathtaking.

I've probably seen this version a 100 times but I started out all those years ago with the BBC series that starred Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. The first suggestion that pops in my head is Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I don't know if you're familiar with that movie but the costumes and sets and people are gorgeous.

More please! My favorite movie is 'Josee, the Tiger and the Fish.' It's an anime film about a girl who was born not able to walk . She dreams of becoming a painter. It's a romance story but the story and character and their developments are soooooooo realistic and good. Even the soundtrack is perfect. I would even dare say it's so much better than 'Kimi no na wa/ Your Name'

This came out great! It still totally blows my mind that Darcy is Tom from Succession. I love that you don't replicate the scene exactly from the screen grab, you still get his likeness and the atmosphere of the screen grab, but it also looks like you painted it because it has your style and flair. I would love to see a Howls Moving Castle one! (actually any Ghibli).

I love this painting and honestly I didn't notice Darcy flaws, since his expression in this scene is of so dramatic in sadness and pain. I actually drew a sketch from this movie, the scene where Elizabeth is left alone by her best friend and she's spiraling on her swing while around her the rain is pouring. Unfortunately I never got the guts to paint it because I love that scene so much and was too afraid to mess it up xD but this video actually made me want to come back to it and just try to give it justice. By the way this is one of my favorite movies, too, I remember going to see it at the theater and then buying the DVD (good old days!). The DVD actually came with the book, and I read it afterwards and I was actually very pleased to read many dialogs that were literally represented word by word in the movie, especially Elizabeth's quirky statements, and her father's too. But I do agree, Darcy is portrayed more humanly weak and sad in the movie, which I love. Please, keep up with this series, I'm looking forward to it.

I'd say one of my favorite movies is V for Vendetta. I actually prefer the movie to the graphic novel. The cinematography and lighting in V for Vendetta are beautiful. I'm now tempted to grab some screenshot references from that movie and maybe even look at the comic I have and see if I can draw/paint some. :D

Moulin Rouge could have some interesting screen captures. And P.S. I love the fact that his features are not all perfectly lined up. I know you were striving for more of a faithful likeness to the actor because of the nature of the series, but many faces are not perfectly symmetrical, and it can be quite beautiful and intriguing.

Great job! It motivates me to do tge same and look at this movie for its colours. Personally I don t think that s the best adaptation of the book and I prefer the BBC mini serie. First movie I thought of when you said you were doing a series of movie stills was The Eagle with Channing Tatum. Honestly I love pretty much everything about this movie, but there are some really beautiful landscapes. I loved the way things were framed... The second one that popped into my head was The Last Witch Hunter with Vin Disel. The rich colors are mouth watering. The bar scene... chef's kiss. If you end up looking for inspiration check them out! Love the painting, I do think you made the right choice with the black border. And the slightly off chin adds to the emotion in my opinion. Love your content!

I love it. My sis and I watched this in the cinema when it came out in 2005 and probably a hundred more times since. It’s one of those comfort movies that never gets tiring. Probably know it word for word by now. “Potatoes… what an interesting vegetable” 😂
