In this Goulet Q&A episode, Brian talks about 'sparking joy', double broad nibs, and total pen and ink deal breakers. Enjoy!
1) mosephus_jenesin (11:27)
Everyone seems to have that one Fountain Pen quality that can instantly make a pen or ink a "no go". For me, it's bleed-through, so I tend to use dry inks, relatively dry nibs and feeds, and fountain pen friendly paper. What is your pen feature/ quality that can instantly make a pen or ink not for you? Rachel's?
2) carrkicksdoor (18:12)
What’s the best way to protect the end of a glass dip pen when not in use?
3) smurl46 (21:34)
You don’t seem to carry double broad nibs where they are available (eg Kaweco). Why not? Not enough demand?
4) taywebb91 (24:46)
I would love to know how ya’ll take the pictures on your website to showcase inks. How do ya’ll do the big splatters and how do you get so many colors and sheens to pull out in one photo? I would love to be able to play around with some of that myself.
5) @whamji182 (29:52)
If a pen says "closeout" on your store, does that mean only Goulet will not be offering it anymore, or it's being discontinued altogether?
6) imfeelingcraftytoday (37:27)
How many pens do we really need? i got hooked on fps and my collection has grown since then. the #sparkjoy movement is making me rethink the number of pens i should have since i only use one at a time and having so much has made me feel queasy.
QOTW: What's one attribute of a pen or ink that's just a total dealbreaker for you? (47:57)

Jeremy Ingram I used fountain pens since I got into school... I quit in 9th grade. I only had 3€ (very cheap) pens. I once got one for 7€ I think (1/3 to 1/2 of a Safari in Germany...) and only used royal blue cartridges. Didn’t knew that there was more than that... (knew the Safaris but never owned one). I‘m 19 now and I got back into fountain pens and did some research. Found out about inks... Yeah. Got a Lamy Vista first just to have one and see if it is good or not. I knew I couldn’t hold it but it was the easiest to get. It was good, so I got a TWSBI Mini AL Blue. 8 Months in I got my Diplomat Aero Factory 14K F. My next pen will be the Kaweco Supra.

QOTW: Anything snakes or spiders. There was an ink I liked in a neat bottle, but it had a spider on the box, hardpass. I also don't care for skinny, lightweight pens, if it feels like I'm using a disposable pen, it needs to look special or have a great feature. Re: Spark Joy, I prefer the Fly Lady system of decluttering. I once told myself IF I ever got to 12 fountain pens that would be my limit. Now I try to stick to only having 12 inked up. Seems like a good comprise, right!?! lol 🌻

QOTW... But also sparking joy and "How much would I pay to own this?": My gripe is dry writers and weirdly sized or balanced pens. I had a bunch of pens in the sub-twenty dollar range, which all worked fine, but I dreaded inking them up. I also had a friend who was interested in trying (all of the) fountain pens. The world is unjust, so she has the funds for maybe one pen, no ink, and no idea what she likes. So I packed my Not For Me Pens in a box (using packs of gummy candy for padding due to a woeful lack of goulet bubble wrap in Europe) with some inking notions I had tons of, some samples and cartridges Germany gets more easily than the US... and then realized I had to fill out a customs slip, even if it's a gift. By my instinctual estimate, I was sending at most 40 bucks worth of pens, maaaaybe 10 of notions and a shiny five euro bill worth of candy. Still, customs are famously strict about things like this, so I sat down with each thing I sent and tallied up the market price for each. Bad news: my gut was right only about the worth of the candy. Good news: I have space for six new pens, and my friend is getting a €100 pen starter pack. It includes a BB.

Overall, I think it a better business model to focus on the relationship over the sale. As a consumer, I prefer a salesperson that knows their business, and is not just a pushy hard-sell. If you can educate me, and make me feel like a respected individual, I'm more likely to do business with you in the future.

Hey Goulet Pen! I finally got my Lamy 2000 fine nib with Iroshizuku Asa-gao yesterday, and after a full day of using it, I am pretty happy! The fine nib is suitable to write both English and my native language since it need a thinner line (One of the problem with my Vista) the ink flow is nice and smooth, overall, impressive! I am considering buying a Karas Kustom or a Pilot Custom 823 from your website for my birthday from your website.

RE: the Konmari thing (which has actually been around for years, when she first published her book)--it started this whole push toward minimalism in general. It caught on because there's a lot of pushback against things like fast fashion and over consumption. Which is cool and we could all do a bit more thinking about how we could be more ethical in our purchasing. But too often (again I saw this happen years ago when the movement first started) people started feeling GUILTY about enjoying stuff, and that's the opposite of the point. I literally saw women on fb decide to get divorced because their husbands did not 'spark joy'. They similarly wanted to get rid of pets because litter boxes don't 'spark joy'. It was MADNESS and it made me wary of the whole movement. I read a cool article a few days ago (If I remembered where I'd link it) that ties Konmari to the whole gentrification thing and also that it anonymizes. Everyone's Kondo'd house would look, if you do it wrong, totally the same--bare surfaces, throws artfully on the couch. How boring! How anonymous. If you like pens, OWN THEM and maybe display them. Remember the guy with the sneakers in the show? He realized the big thing is that he needed to display and use his sneaks instead of just buying them.

What a lot of people miss is the Shinto influence (Marie was a shrine maiden for 5 years), which includes elements of animism, or the idea that objects can basically kind of have souls (think of the story of The Velveteen Rabbit). In this context, it would make sense that we are doing ourselves as well as our possessions a disservice by letting them languish unused and unloved, lost in unnecessary clutter. It's much deeper than simply "does this thing make me happy?" and delves more into being aware of why we have the things we do, and whether we are doing them and ourselves justice or simply entombing ourselves in a dragon's hoard. There are things we have because we need to have them, and there are things we have for enjoyment; of that second category, we can only enjoy the things we can find and use, and clutter is a burden physically, financially, and psychologically. If one can maintain a large collection of fountain pens in which every pen sparks joy, Marie says to "keep them with confidence," and just find a practical way to store them so they stay enjoyable and don't simply become clutter.

Follow-up question to #6 - If/when you DO decide you have too many non-joy-sparking pens (highly topical for me as I’m currently packing up my entire house to move out for a 6-8 month renovation) what is the most practical way of divesting yourself of those pens that might bring OTHERS some joy? I don’t really want to become an eBay seller, so what forums are best for posting used pens for sale at reasonable prices?

There is an easy fix to the loose Lamy Aion cap: if you cut a 3/4" strip of paper long enough to wrap around the back end of the barrel about one and 1/4 times, then post the cap on the back of the barrel and allow the paper to slip off and expand to line the inside of the cap. There is a slight lip on the cap so when you cap/uncap or post/unpost the paper stays put, and it's just enough to make up for the tolerance so the cap doesn't spin when capped and also allows it to post more securely. It's totally reversible of course, just pull the paper out with a pencil eraser for grip or a pair of tweezers. If 1-1/4 times around the barrel with the strip isn't quite and the cap's still loose, just incrementally make it longer, and likewise reverse if it's too tight when capping. But I have four Aions and that's the measurement that worked on all of them. I hoped they adjusted it for the new colors, alas, they didn't (that's why I utilized this quick hack on four Aions).

Thanks for answering my question. I'm Wham182 btw :) I was just curious, because there was a pen I had my eye on that said closeout. But I would need to save up for it. The Spark Joy movement reminds me of those people who have told me (for YEARS!) "Have you used it in the past 6 months? If not, get rid of it!" I grew up with my grandparents and too many things in my life are there because they have love and nostalgia attached to them. Would I throw out journals I wrote 10 years ago because I have filled them up and no "used" them since then? Heck no! I can't abide by those kinds of "rules" for minimalising my life. It just doesn't work for me. I turn around and go "Where's that.. I know I had a .... " Nope. Just can't do it. Call me a hoarder if you like. I don't mind nearly as much as I would mind not having my "stuff" around me. (The credit card bills I can throw out!)

QOTW: Weight and attractiveness of the pen. Having small hands, I've always used lightweight thin pens. I do have a Jinhao x450 which is a bit hefty - but the nib is so smooth and glides so well that the weight is forgivable in that situation and I've come to like it a lot.

Ouh yes... Lamy Imporium LX. Been waiting for this thing. I’ll be saving for it when I got my Diplomat Aero Factory (F). I would really like to see a review from you guys, because it would be awesome and because there aren’t many out there, especially not with good camera footage. But I would like to have it with the Rhodium trim. I’m personally not that much of a gold trim guy.

WHAT? There is a new Lamy?! Awesome. The Lamy Pur. I just found it because I looked for my grail pen... The Imporium. Is the Pur the thicker CP1 I was screaming for?! I hope so :) DAMN IT!!! I also screamed for a ballpoint version like it is! Do they know my thoughts? Because I grip it quite low and the only pen (from Lamy) that doesn’t taper too early is the Econ. Edit: Ballpoint is nice, but pretty slippery, because of the awesome smooth finish. It is a thick and heavy pen :) It’s also quite large. I quickly like it. Though I can’t say that it is the revolution. I still need to get the Pur as fountain pen... I think that it will he great for :) ...there are also no slippery sections.

I think it's a little hard to "dip your toes" with the double broad nib on a pen such as a Lamy 2000. The pen is not cheap. If someone wants to use a broad pen but not spend a lot of money on it they are kind of limited. Now with the price of a Kaweco Sport, I would love to get one with a broad or double broad on it already. It is nice to see though that you do sell the Kaweco nib units in the broad and double broad though so one could at least buy the nib separate and swap it out themselves.

Regarding closeouts, some which are not listed as limited or special edition seem so darn fast in their turnaround, so knowing if it was manufacturer discontinue or just Goulet discontinue would be cool. I much prefer to get my pens and inks and supplies from Goulet than other online retailers. My biggest disappointment has been the decrease in color offerings of the Vanishing Point. I love the darn things, and I love variety. I have to save up for each purchase and barely managed to grab the lovely metallics before they disappeared. I also only managed one of the Opus 88 Fantasias, but they weren't quite as popular for me as the VPs have been. When I find a pen I like, I like to have a variety of them to fit my moods and needs. Which also means I have a *lot* of pens. My "pendulum" swings with my pocketbook these days, though. And, no, I don't have enough space for all of them. But as I use fountain pens exclusively (and have been for over 10 years), I won't be getting rid of any of them. As for pen and ink turnoffs, hm. I really hate it if the pen does not write out of the box. It irritates me to no end. I don't like fiddling with pens and I don't like dealing with returning one or having to buy an extra new nib for a new pen. I despise metal grips. I, too, do not like scratchy nibs and I like seeing my ink on the paper; and, like Rachel, yellow and snakes are a no-go for me. With ink, I like my inks to have permanent or semi-permanent qualities, hence why I love Noodler's so much (I also like supporting USA small business). I do prefer brighter colors, but the flats don't bother me. I do not like shimmer inks or scented inks. I don't want particles to clog my nibs/pens, and scented inks trigger migraines for me (just like perfumes, tar, and diesel do). Oddly enough, scented sealing waxes from Atelier Gargoyle are kind of intoxicating to me, and I like them.
@amaryllisl8928
@amaryllisl8928 5 лет назад
QOTW: Dry anything! I hate dry pens, hate dry inks (my least favorite line of ink is the Pelikan 4001, uuurgh I can't *stand* those). Dry pens I can usually make super wet pretty quickly, especially cheap Chinese pens with not exactly stellar nibs :p I got a bunch of those lately and one of them was perfect except for the tines that were pinched together too tight for my taste. A bit of tinkering with it and it was perfect afterwards, it now has a nice juicy flow. It can hard start a little sometimes, but I prefer that with a wet pen rather than something that just won't put ink down on the page. I also really dislike slick metal grips. Metal is fine if it's slightly textured, but the slick stuff just won't stay in my hand. The only slick metal grip pen I own is a hooded nib Kaigelu pen and I only use it for quick notes.
@ChristineKrannich

After using F and M nibs from both Japan and Germany and finding them far too thin, I know I have to add the cost of a replacement nib to a pen. That makes me pause. The initial price may have been a stretch already but the extra nib so I can thoroughly enjoy the pen may be the dealbreaker.
@peterhofmann8292
@peterhofmann8292 5 лет назад
For me, sections that are made out of metal, have turned into a "deal breaker", my fingers just slip too much, and the pen becomes uncomfortable to hold. Also fine nibs (I am a lefty) as I find they just dig into the paper.
@mikew9537
@mikew9537 5 лет назад
QOTW - Inks: I prefer saturated inks, but not so much that they cause nib creep. I tire quickly with light colored inks, even if they shade. Pens: Grip (the middle of it) must be 10mm or larger, but not humungo; bats are great for baseball, but not writing. It must be long enough to be used unposted. Most of my writing is long periods, but short stints so having to repost often is a downer. I know the Platinum 3776 is pretty popular, and I tried to like it to no avail. Plus the nib had too much feedback, and I like super smooth nibs.

Several deal breakers: 1. Slick metal sections 2. Very light pens (I have a Pilot Falcon and rarely use it because while it writes well it is so light) 3. Pens less than 5 1/4 inches in length. I have Normal size hands but hate shorter pens 4. Pink pens 5. $500 plus pens with steel nibs - just seems wrong

QOTW: ink, if it doesn’t have any shading. Pen, there are a few, metal/aluminium whatever grip section and size. I can’t with big pens. 😅 About getting rid of sth that doesn’t give me joy. I realised I live my life in periods so what gives me joy cam change and will change so getting rid of something I don’t enjoy that much anymore might be a mistake.

QotW: For me it's slenderness of the pen and grip. it's something I've discovered about myself. The Vanishing Point and M200 are about as skinny as I prefer and recently gave away several pens that were sitting unused for that very reason.

QOTW - I’m with Brian on this one; anything too thin is an immediate turnoff. I usually won’t even look at anything with a grip under 9 - 10 mm. Also, anything back weighted, even when unposted - too much strain on the arthritic wrists.

The big deal-breaker for me is attractiveness of the pen, which is totally subjective, of course. I think some very popular pens are ugly (Diplomat Aero and Kawecos) so there’s no way I would buy them even though they are excellent pens by all accounts. I don’t like orange, yellow, or pink pens or inks so I wouldn’t buy them.

I’m totally with you! I’m really into the Diplomat Aero Factory. Awesome! But for example the Faber-Castell Loom... Nothing for me. The pen itself is nice. But the cap is a dealbreaker for me. I just don’t like it. Clips are the dealbreakers for me. I don’t need a damn Clip! And if it then is ugly or flimsy I’m out! The Lamy CP1 has the perfect Clip. The one on the Lamy Imporium seems to be nice as well.
@cliffordbaker4930

Herr Keks That’s funny because we seem exactly opposite! I don’t mind the Loom but havinyno clip is almost a deal-breaker for me. It’s a disaster waiting to happen and would stress me too much. They would have to come with a pen rest. So, it’s a good thing that pens come in so many varieties and designs!
@herrkeks8509
@herrkeks8509 5 лет назад
Clifford Baker That’s right... the rolling-away-issue on clipless pens is a thing that you need to be aware of. I want to get my first rollaway pen soon :) It’s the Kaweco Supra. I usually carry more pens with me (in an Eastpack case... The where you lift the top off) and I might just lay it back in there everytime. I‘ll have to see. But I agree that it would be extremely helpful if they would include a pen rest. They have these awesome tins, so thats something and you can fit another pen in there. It is a tradeoff that you have to live with, when you want to have a pen without a clip.
@MSSmith1022
@MSSmith1022 5 лет назад
For me a deal breaker when it comes to pens is comfort. I have seen some pens that have elaborate decorations along the barrel that are raised and makes the pen look very uncomfortable to hold and write with, like the Jinhao 999 Dragon.
@copperchef.
@copperchef. 5 лет назад
QOTW: I'd say for a pen, a huge step from the section to the barrel of the pen. I found a pen that had beautiful raden inlay but the section was tiny and had a huge step. It was even affordable but the discomfort from holding that prevented me from adding it to my collection. Ink: I would say an ink that is unreliable. prone to hard starts, possibly damaging pens, color not consistent from batch to batch.
@williamt.dluger5671
@williamt.dluger5671 5 лет назад
QOTW: I am not a fan of a step between the barrel and section of the pen. It mayblook streamlined when capped, but is unformfortable to me when writing. I prefer plastic/resin sections to metal becaise they are mote comfortable to me for long writing. Along these lines, the Lamy 2000 and TWSBI Eco have become my daily writers.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for? I think the ECO is the best value. But I think the 580 is the best all-around. The separate nib units make it very easily to fill & clean. If you want a Vac, the Vac700R is a great option, but it's not really necessary ahead of a piston filler. I'd go with the 580! - Colin

Depending on your budget, you can hedge your purchase. Let’s eliminate the Vac 700R for now. It’s a different feel from the others and it’s easier to look at the Eco and 580. The Eco is a great pen and one of the best for the money in quality and longevity. Does not have interchangeable nib units but the nib can be swapped easily. Easy to clean. The 580 had interchangeable nib units you can purchase. One pen, different nib sizes. The 580ALR and the othe 580s are great pens; again, good quality for the price. I’d recommend a 580 first. Then maybe purchase other nib units to try it as a broad or extra fine. The Eco-T is also a great pen if you like the triangular grip. The Vac700R if you’ve fallen for TWSBIs as a whole and want to try a vacuum filler. Bigger nib on that.

QOTW: Snakes! I hate them and I will not buy any pen with a snake, clip or otherwise, on it. Ugh! As for Double Broad pens, don't forget the Platinum 3776 white and green pens! You have them available in BB. I have a LE 3776 in a BB and love it. It's wonderful for signing things or writing notes to myself because I can't always see thinner writing. And, just to let you know, I am very disappointed that the Lamy Scala doesn't come in a B. Fortunately, I have a few extra B spares and can change it out, as the nibs are not expensive. But I will likely buy a B gold nib to put on it when I purchase the pen. JTLYK, my favorite nib on any of my pens is my OBB on my Mont Blanc Boheme (piston filler). I bought it over 10 years ago and wasn't so keen on it. But now, I love it. I put a real shading ink in it and it shows the ink off incredibly well. It's a great pen. Anyway...

A pen that dries out quickly is a deal breaker for me. I only use one pen enough to change the ink frequently, so any others need to be pretty airtight.

QOTW. A pen that makes me hold it in a specific position, like the Lamy Safari. I really want to like it (and I have one) but the tri grip thing just doesn't work for me.

Hey there! I just picked up a Conklin Crescent, and am having some difficulty getting a "complete" fill. I have the demonstrator, so I can see what's in the sac. Do you have any tips that could help?
@Gouletpens
@Gouletpens 5 лет назад
One tip is when you fill it up the first time, expel it back into the bottle/sample and fill again. This helps get rid of any air pockets that may be in sac. May need to repeat that a few times, but usually delivers a better fill! - Colin

It's a shame there aren't as many broad/double broads. I've been looking for a broad or double broad to try out.

Thin, sharp ridges where the cap screws on short section followed by sharp ridges, a pen that almost certainly will need nib and feed tinkering to work correctly, obvious knock offs. If there are vampire themed pens, those are a no go. I can be picky about textures, some brushed aluminum sends me and raw aluminum. Smells bother me, so if a pen is going to leave my hands smelling brassy, I can’t deal with it. Sadly I love to look of copper.

I got into using fountain pens in high school in the 1980's and continued using them throughout university - then I stopped. I "think" I would like to get back into the fountain pen habit but I do not want to spend over $28 for one to see if I really want to get back in the habit. What should I purchase?

Are there used ones on "Greg's list" or "testers" at a brick and mortar or pen show close to you?
@Gouletpens
@Gouletpens 5 лет назад
Yeah if a pen show is near you, that's probably the easiest way to test. Beyond that, something like a Pilot Varsity or a Platinum Preppy are good options under $5 to tip your toes back in. - Colin

QOTW: Drying up. If I put down a pen for 2 days and it doesn't write immediately when I use it again, that pen won't get inked anymore.

Hard to resist making jokes about how broads are such a problem... 😁 Dry writing nibs are my deal-breaker. I want that smooth, frictionless experience when writing. I don't mind using one for writing a quick note or two, but for a longer writing session give me a wet nib for sure.
@herrkeks8509
@herrkeks8509 5 лет назад
Diplomats are supposed to be very good. Very smooth even the F nibs. I have the Diplomat Aero Factory 14K F and it is awesome :) I like this pen extremely :) But people say that there is no need for gold nibs on Diplomats, but I wanted that little bit of softness. Maybe an Diplomat M is a good compromise.

"It's a very bumpy sort of pen." And that would be my deal-breaker! Also dry, scratchy nibs. They do NOT spark joy!

Wet gushing pens are deal breaker for me. I use my pens to write and sketch. I don't like pen that is too wet and cannot draw dry fine line in the initial sketch stage. I recently bought a Opus 88 demo in F nib.....and that is too wet for me. and I swap out the TWSBI vac 700 M nib just 1 day after I try it. I guess I can't enjoy most if not all european pen in this case. That's why all I have now are Pilot F, FM, Sailor, MF, M, Platinum M, TWSBI F. anyone know any western brand that tune their pen on the finer, dryer side ?

I've found Faber-Castell pens, especially the finer nibs to be pretty dry writers! - Colin

QQOW - Ugly pens (to my eyes, of course) The Goulet Pens website has spoiled me. I know the grip diameter, body diameter and relationships between them that make for comfortable writing. So for me too narrow, too wide, and too large a difference all are 'no buy' signals for me.

That's why I like the Noodler's Boston Safety Pen. Good price for a pen that can handle pigmented / India inks and the like (permanent inks ) Don't get me wrong I have other pens as well, but that aspect of the BSP stands out against the other pens that CANNOT handle pigmented/India inks but can handle permanent ink (Platinum Carbon Black).
