Gourd and peyote stitch are the exact same technique. The difference is only in the names: the term “peyote stitch” is (or at least used to be) reserved solely for peyote paraphernalia of the Native American Church (NAC), which is beaded with this technique; whereas, the term “gourd stitch” is applied to non-NAC items that may be made in the exact same fashion, just not used for NAC purposes. The term “gourd stitch” comes from the beadwork done on the wooden-dowel handles of Gourd Dance shakers and on fan handles.

Well you've defiantly done your homework. I would have been you 25 years ago. I wouldn't have been able to see this in my minds eye. Seeing it graphed out, I have a better understanding. Not totally, but got the jest of it. Thank you so much.

In my 2.5 year journey It was making me nuts trying to decipher the difference between gourd and peyote. I did realize that there was a difference in 3 drop beading. Looked everywhere trying to find someone to spell it out. It took me awhile to learn Gourd stitching. 😳. I still don’t use it very often. However this video has helped me to understand what it can do. Thanks! It’s my desire to stay with tradition but in contemporary design. Even saying that it’s the beads that lead me. But since I haven’t given gourd stitch much of a chance I will now. Can’t wait for future videos on this subject. Thanks, again!

What you are showing here on graphs as 2 drop peyote is actually 1 drop peyote. 2 drop is 2 beads higher, 2 beads lower, 2 beads higher, 2 beads lower e.t.c. 🙂

Thank you. This makes sense as I am self-taught and watching RU-vid tutorials and how I learned about peyote stitch. I currently have issues that are seriously baffling, but after many restarts and backups and knowing my seed beads are different sizes these shifts can be helped with a gentler hand! Well, I am loving this process and your video explains what I am dealing with. Your video is supportive, informative and confirming.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I just finished two lighter covers, one in peyote and one in gourd stitch and I was wondering why one was so stiff and the other so malleable (and also what's the advantages of each). A google search later and I was even more confused because i came across 2 and 3 bead peyote being called 2 drop and 3 drop peyote. Now it's all clear! But also my mind is blown by the last part...

Many people, myself included, create thinking about colors and patterns. It’s so fascinating to hear from people that have a deeper relationship with how beads work. Thanks for sharing some history, also. Thank you 🤩😊
