+Cata Lyn It's actually revealed in the light novel (I think manga too?) that Gourry is actually about as strong as Lina if not more so. When it comes to his swordsmanship and physical abilities & even in his magical capabilities, but his memory capacity and the fact that he's a complete dunce makes him unable to use magic like she does, so he sticks to his physical abilities. Also it's revealed in a later series of Slayers that the Sword of Light is as powerful as that, but it takes the wielders will power.

In the novels he is actually smart. Kanzaka said in an interview that Gourry is as strong as Lina is.

I can confirm this is true. The whole "idiot persona" Gourry puts forward is a front. He just has a bad memory. He's astutely aware of everything going on, but plays the fool to avoid drawing attention to himself and his forgetfulness.

The problem is that Sylphiel is supposed to be a soft-spoken person, which I guess the voice actress just couldn't translate very well into actions scenes such as this. It's not quite as bad during ordinary dialogue, but I've always found it very out of place in situations such as this.

The dub and sub are near identical. The dub translations are almost word for word. In fact in one ep where the girls dress as sailor moon characters, they start singing. Then Lina says "Now in Japanese!" and it switches to Japanese.

@@dalair This is not about identity but about authenticity. In the Japanese language - the original - it sounds a million percent better than in any other language. English is the worst and probably lazy.
