GP1800R #4: Ribbon delete without using the expensive Riva kit.

A quick video of how to delete the ribbon, or flame arrestor, that's cast into the plastic intake manifold of a 2018 and newer Yamaha GP1800R SVHO. If you have a 2017 or older GP1800r, this tutorial doesn't apply.

If Riva told you to do it like this they wouldn’t make $150. Good video.

been wondering why people dont just do this instead of the Riva kit, remove the flame arrestor element and put it back together... easy. Thanks your video explained why there was a need for the replacement flange on their kit that i couldn't figure out

Yeah 2021 plus there is no way that thing is pulling out, now if you drill that outer plastic part out with the kit, sure. But if you don’t want to buy that kit this guy is doing fine. You should have seen mine, I drilled like 20 holes hahah

This year and newer has to be cut out. Pre 2019 (i believe) slide out. Even the riva kits require cuttinf with a supplied hole saw bit.

In theory this may be useful for the HO versions since there is no forced air induction...I wonder if the 2022 skis built for export are still fitting these?

So what are negatives/risks of removing the ribbon? Yamaha put it there for a reason, right?
@ZF5foraWhiteGuy
@ZF5foraWhiteGuy 10 месяцев назад
It is there because it acts as a "flame arrestor." They are required on all boats in the US basically as a leftover law from a bygone era when boats were carbureted.... Carburetors have a tendency to back fire out of the intake and this can be a fire hazzard for boats... however with modern fuel injected, computer controlled engines, this doesn't happen, however the law still applies.... so you are at most violating an emissions law pertaining to boats. But the possibility of you getting caught doing it is basically zero, i cant imagine anyome would be taking off your intake manifold to inspect it... but if you are concerned about it, they do sell aftermarket air filters that are basically a metal mesh designed for boats to meet the flame arrestor requirement and if you watch my other video on the inake/ccv mod, i explain it a little more in that video.
@brockb4452
@brockb4452 10 месяцев назад
@@ZF5foraWhiteGuy Thank you for taking the time to respond. This is extremely helpful to know, and makes me much more inclined to do this mod now that I know that it has to do with emissions laws rather than an actual danger risk to the engine somehow.

@@ZF5foraWhiteGuy cool...iv had my delete kit for months now..came in after our season was done..so i havent done mine yet..is it easy and straightforward taking the manifold off?..my manifold hose blew off on the lake one time and i could barely get my hands down the to put it back on...plus..i have one of those adapters for the bov thats there in the middle of manifold, and it has an extra place to put a boost guage..

@@SlayerHawkX its not that hard just takes some patience because they all have loctite on them and youll spend a lot of time turning the ratchet a little bit at a time. I spent the most amount of time fishing out bolts with a magnet that i dropped in the hull.

What the purpose of that sheet metal filter in the Intake manifold? Like why purposely have such a restrictive device directly in the intake ?
@ZF5foraWhiteGuy
@ZF5foraWhiteGuy 2 года назад
Its only to conply with outdated boat laws. Carbureted engines have a tendency to backfire through the intake. In a sealed engine compartment on a boat, if you have a fuel leak, you have an explosion potential and the piece in the intake complies as a flame arrestor... since these engines and most new boat engines are fuel injected, the laws of flame arrestors still apply to them but the backfire potential is almost non existent.
@900stx7
@900stx7 2 года назад
@@ZF5foraWhiteGuyAlso, boats with inboard engines are required to have powered ventilation for the engine compartment, pwcs don't have the same requirements.

@bobbyhorton4034
@bobbyhorton4034 Год назад
You didn't need to do all that. The first hole should have been the right size drill bit so that you could immediately screw a small slide hammer for pulling dents out of cars. Auto zone and others sell this slide hammer. It would have popped right out after screwing into the hole you made with the sheet metal screw tip on the slide hammer and a couple slaps with the weight the ribbon would have popped out clean with no more drilling or metal debris created. I want to do this to my 2020. But I cannot get anyone to tell me that their skin improved performance after doing this. If the ribbon is that restrictive, it's got to make more power...or maybe it actually doesn't became of some physics reason.

@@2SHARP4UIQ150 it should nearly fall off with no force... you most likely have some bolts left in it. There are 2 bolts down at thr very bottom on either corner of the manifold. They are the same size as the ones that go all along the intake ports (in the fuel rail area)

What are the gains to all this work?
@ZF5foraWhiteGuy
@ZF5foraWhiteGuy Год назад
The common conception is that you will get increased airflow through the intake.... The main reason I personally did this mod, i meantioned in the video. There is a possibility for the ribbon itself to come out of its position and get sucked into the intake... the ribbon itself isnt big enough to do any harm but the rubber gasket can. The rubber gasket can get sucked into an intake valve and bend the valve. Under warrenty this isnt an issue, but if you're going to modify your ski and void the warrenty in the first place, its good insurance for future bigger mods. But probably a negligible performance increase.
