GPS Precision - Garmin 245 Vs Stryd pod, an interesting result!
In this video I will compare the precision of the GPS from the Garmin 245
with the data collected from the Stryd pod.
Two different test conditions:
- in the track and field 2laps (800m)
(where usually the GPS doesn't perform well)
- in the Prater (street) 1km straight
For each test condition I repeated the test with the GPS on to collected the data from the Garmin 245 GPS, and with the GPS off to be sure to collect the data from the Stryd pod, paying attention to run exactly in the same path.
The result is not exactly what I expected but anyway enjoy the video!

Nice review. I calibrate my Stryd with every pair of trainers. There’s often quite a big difference between shoes. Once dialled in the accuracy is extremely good.
@runningwithstelvio
@runningwithstelvio 3 года назад
Thank you Billy, yes that's true, others are saying the same, the calibration is strictly related to the shoe you are running with and the difference can be huge as you said and as I realized during the tests. Thanks for you comment for sharing your experience and for watching!

How do you recommend to calibrate it? I contacted Stryd and they said leave it at 100. When I run indoors, on the treadmill, I find I am running much more harder (using Stryd) - I am convinced it is all wrong. Despite the company claims.
@billywheeler4168
@billywheeler4168 2 года назад
@@johy2007 set your watch to 100 and run several laps around a track in Lane 1. Push your lap button each time your foot strikes the start/finish line. Download the tcx file and you’ll see the meters captured for each lap. Maybe they’ll say 400m, but most likely they won’t. You can adjust from there. Some of my shoes report 380m while others were 418m. In fairness to Stryd, once your footpod is correctly calibrated it’s very accurate. Unfortunately you have to go through this ball ache with each pair of shoes!

Thank you so much Stefano. Yes I expected a different result on the track and field, but maybe is a matter of configuration for the Stryd pod. I tested the 245 and the Stryd, it would always show pace rounded to 5 seconds, for expampe 4:15, 4:20, 4:25, 5:00 etc. but never 4:13, 4:21, 4:27, 5:01. My Polar just showed the exact, unrounded number, which I prefer.
@runningwithstelvio
@runningwithstelvio Год назад
Yes I know, but it is done in order to present a value to the runner that is not constantly changing every second of the activity. The actual non-rounded pace for a completed activity will display as the average pace on the watch after the activity is stopped. Detailed pace information for the duration of the activity will show once the activity is uploaded to your Garmin Connect account

Did you use the Track Run activity on your 245 or the regular Run one ? The former should grant better accuracy (after calibration).
@runningwithstelvio
@runningwithstelvio 3 года назад
Ciao Massimo, I used for both tests the same configuration for the 245, that is the regular one. Yes with the track run mode should perform even better after the calibration. It might be that I have to repeat the calibration for the atryd pod because honestly I expected a better result

I see your using Bluetooth connection to Garmin 245 (FP- Stryd) in settings. I believe Garmin recommends ANT+ connection example:- FP - 55345 in settings. Change to ANT+ and see if that helps the Stryd accuracy.

I've noticed my gps at local track is way off in lane 1. Usually has me running well over .40km per lap.

GPS doesn't work on tracks - I am shocked how often people take their GPS to a track and are surprised. It doesn't work on continuous curves. Look at the tracks and it is easy to see why when you consider how GPS works. It can't smooth the curve. Left/right errors are magnified, not cancelled out, on curves.

That's also my thought, but sometimes we have weird results. Maybe it was the calibration on the Stryd... but the result surprised me.

Stryd is for me not useful at all for pace and distance because it changes a lot when changing my shoes from +1.2 to 4.7%

Yes unfortunately it is very sensitive to the shoe and should be calibrated every time, quite annoying...

@runningwithstelvio

@@runningwithstelvio GPS has been known for giving inaccurate distance (thus inaccurate pace) for many years. I even tried to develop an app, purely for pace feedback and alert, which always gave unusable result, so I abandoned the idea. Of course, this in itself doesn't mean that Stryd is precise. Without a verified distance, this result is neither interesting nor surprising.
@runningwithstelvio
@runningwithstelvio 3 года назад
@@laszlokenez7685 I'm glad to know that your are interested in this topic and you even implemented an app. Yes, GPS is not reliable especially on the track, that's why even Garmin recognized it implementing the track run feature, especially designed for track and field workouts. i'm sorry that you didn't find it interesting, considering how much a track can be off (up to 1%) i found it interesting to see the difference between the two devices.
