Couldn't Agree More. This Group Right Here, Windsor, And LoveNotes are T🎨PS On the Women's Singing Side.. ..have been (thus far) for the past several years.🎵🎨🎶🎨🎶🎨🎶🎨🎶 The crying Shame though is Apparently, (most/some of) the judges still dont think so.. 🙄😑🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🤨🙄🤷♀️🤷♂️🤷♀️🤦♂️🤦♀️🤦♀️🙄🥴🙄
Please, don't ever compromise your art to win a contest. Please don't make that Faustian bargain. You are an inspiration to so many of us. Your togetherness, and the pure joy you convey, renews my spirit every time I see and hear you sing.
Lock, ring, consonance, freakishly good musicality, tons of heart, rapport, genuine story, artistic relevance and non-stop entertainment. Seems like a crown to me, but what do I know?
The only explanation I could see for this set not winning the contest is that the SAI higher ups want to keep them competing so they juke the scores. And that kind of makes sense. Winning means they stop showing up and stop giving SAI content like this to post. I mean, no slight against any of the other quartets, many of them are outstanding, but this is CLEARLY the best representation of women's barbershop out there right now. It's engaging, flawlessly executed, stylistically appropriate for all the styles they cover, and modern while still being barbershop. I always hesitate to show my students women's barbershop because it will turn them off from the artform, but I'd show them this set in a heartbeat. I can't even imagine how many young ladies have been drawn into barbershop because of GQ. It's over a dozen just from my school in the six years I've been teaching here. Keep it up ladies. Just like the Boston Common, they'll have to reward it eventually, and decades from now it'll be a running joke that you won international 5 times in a row or something.
@@jenniferspeers2453 It's not the fact that it's female, that's a good thing. The problem is the usual trappings that come with Sweet Adeline culture. The same stuff lots of current members don't like; the incredibly heavy makeup, the "weird" costumes, the gestural language, often the interp, etc. A lot of the things that are done "cause that's how it's done" come across as extremely manufactured and awkward to a teenager that hasn't been around it for years. We all get used to it and see the artistry underneath. They just get a surface level glance and think it's weird. It's actually starting to get better now than 2 years ago when I wrote this comment. But if you compare it to men's quartets, where there has been a decade long push (since the late 90's) to make things look and feel more "natural" and less "barbershoppy," you'll see what I mean. Men's quartets from the 80's 90's have the same affect, it looks off-putting and weird to teenagers.
No, as they switched back in the set the sound is more 'traditional' barbershop, all things being equal, but they blend together so tight its hard to pick out. I think they should continue to do so playing to their strengths & challenge the stodgy judging 'standards' which this quartet continues to destroy. Go girls!
@Aritosthenes The whole package was indeed fantastic! I just felt that the last 2 minutes in particular is the cleanest singing I've ever heard on the SAI stage. The lock, ring and sync is as good as it get's in barbershop! Hopefully they'll win next year :)
How on earth did I find this two years late, this is amazing! These Girls are hilarious and brillant at the same time, intonation and harmony, matching of the voices, range, blending... just wow. I am more than impressed. Seems like barbershop CAN make a girl happy 😄
A few months ago i had a random video in my suggestions for a barbershop quarter performance. I figured "these sound quite cool when i see them on tv shows" so gave it a listen. Fast forward a few months and i have a bunch of barbershop videos saved to my favourites from both mens and womens competitions and have started recognising teams and members. This is my first time listening to GQ and this set was absolutely fantastic. As a newcomer to this world i really appreciate acts that have charisma and inject personality into their performances. The songs were all great, the vocals were sublime and all four members really put their own stamp on it. Cant wait to listen to more! 🙌
They keep getting better and better. I love “Where Do You Start?” Bea Arthur sang a beautiful rendition. It’s on RU-vid and easy to find. Highly recommend
You girls are the best ladies Quartet in SAI Like lady said earlier SAI broken judging system You gals dare to be inventive & fresh & that might ruffle some traditional barbershop feathers Keep being you The audience loves it
Been out of internet service so just catching up. No spoilers please. However, this has to be GQ's best contest set EVER! Brilliant girls. Loooong time fan.
just check out which video of the finalists was called the most... then you see the real winners! GQ is the best quartet ever, with the greatest voices and with incomparable arrangements! Looking forward for the 3rd CD!
GQ Vol 3 pre-ordered at the Alexandria Harmonizer show. Not only talented but all the GQ members are inspiring young women. My granddaughter will never forget one-on-one with Katie Mac before that show. Two young women (teenagers, plus their choral director) are now hooked on barbershop harmony, likely will be forever. The ladies of GQ are the best both on and off the stage.
Every year when I watch GQ on SAI, I am more and more convinced that the judges are a bunch of old, grouchy, stuck-up women who have no idea what joy even means.
No "probably", there is no question to frame this around. As I've said elsewhere...there is no quartet with the GQ level of individual talent in one quartet. It is as simple as that. Is this their best performance? Over all, no. Aspects of it? Ok maybe. They are as good as a quartet can get, and proud to say it. They are the epitome of the goal of the entire enterprise.
If anyone’s interested, Aubrey Logan, first produced this song. She may have composed it too. I couldn’t find that assurance. Aubrey Logan is more of a jazz artist, but incredibly talented also.
didn't catch this live. Thought: "I bet GQ will be better than Viva but Viva will win anyway because SAI judging is broken." Upon watching this (and Titanium): "hmmm seems I was exactly correct."
Windsor can't legitimately out sing GQ. Windsor may win at some point (not sure they are a thing anymore?) ? But it wouldn't be a better singing performance if Windsor did win.
after watching them all, the Best part of not winning in 2019 is that you and Throwback will be the Most deserving Champs on 2020 which is a great number that everyone will remember
What an odd question. GQ is actually GQ. Why a need for comparisons, male or female? What is your motivation for the question? GQ is GQ, frankly they stand alone in talent, win or no win, they are as good as it can actually be.
pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease tell me that GQ is still competing?!?!?!?! I can't stand the fact that they haven't won yet (but I lowkey don't mind because its awesome watching them perform) #GQ2021
For the regular folks, to access the voices, we need songs not pulled from someone's personal basement. So that we can assess what we are hearing with what we have heard before. Difficult to do here.
James Duprey Surely at a completion like this, their target audience is not regular folks. If you wanna ‘assess’ with what you’ve heard before, go watch the local kindergarten singing competition.
Well.....one thing is certain, gee...maybe two things: Barbershop singing is completely foreign to you (cough) and....your premise for needing to have heard a song previously so that you can "assess" it!?!?!?... is well beyond ludicrous. Just sit back, close your eyes, take the songs for exactly what they are. Listen for matching tone, silky flow, precision of harmony, one voice from four people...not to mention the actual meaning of the words.
Suggestion: Listen...BUT don't watch. They are certainly beautiful ladies and wonderful performers, but if you want to be critical, just listen and don't watch. You might come to a different opinion.
