We got an interesting question on our previous video:
"...is it possible to hold a gun's slide when it's fired so that you prevent a new round from entering the chamber?"
It seems that a lot of people think that if you grab the slide and fire the pistol it will seriously cut you or even break your fingers.
To show everyone that it can be done without losing any of your fingers we decided to film it :)
As you can see from the video, YES it is possible to hold a gun slide to prevent it from cycling and not get your hand hurt.
WARNING!
This video is NOT a "how to" for defense against a handgun. Things shown in this video can be dangerous and can result in a serious injury or death.

DeathM10 DON'T try on Revolver!
@Ltulrich
@Ltulrich 9 лет назад
DeathM10 There is a 'safe decock' procedure for revolvers that can be used to prevent firing. As songbirdband mentions it is not something you ever want to do using live ammunition, but during combat, if wearing gloves, you can defeat a revolver if it has an exposed hammer. Then again, if you can get your hand on your assailant's gun, the best way to prevent it from firing (at you) is to take control over it.
@chrisdoe2659
@chrisdoe2659 9 лет назад
DeathM10 As long as it is on double action, you can just grab the cylinder and it won't fire. If the cylinder can't spin, the hammer won't pull back. Obviously never try it with a loaded gun because if you screw it up, you will burn the hell out of your hand.

There are a lot of people that are in the military that go through long grueling months in basic training going over things like how to clear buildings for enemies and practice shooting on the range on a regular basis that freeze up or shut down in the middle of a battle field training won't guarantee your brain will handle the stressful situation of possibly being killed in a proactive way

When I bought my first Glock it came with a subscription to Glock magazine. In the magazine was a story written by Gaston Glock. He said that the slide stop on his pistols was NOT to be used as a slide release. He intended that we pull the slide back all the way to the rear and release it to chamber the first round. That extra 1/8 inch made sure that the round was fully seated and the extractor grabbed the case head.

Just wanted to thank the guys at Polenar for uploading all they do. I often use this video for training purposes with new shooters as a part of the introductory phase to guns. Showing people who are new to firearms that they are not handheld planet destroyers like in the movies is a good way to boost confidence about recoil fears before ever holding a gun. Also there seems to be some confusion about the purpose of this video. HOpefully this will help: This video is not primarily about the tactical aspect of putting your enemies semi-auto pistol out of battery. It is more of a proof of concept with regards to the recoil not being strong enough to harm you should you find yourself holding on to the slide of a semi-auto pistol as it's fired. A large percentage of the comments seem to imply that this video is somehow instructing you to grab a bad guys gun and put it out of battery like in some of the more advanced training scenarios. While that is possible given the right person, place, distance, reaction, speed, etc etc etc. It is ill-advised unless you have had extensive training and practice doing it. This is just a video showing that it's possible to hold on to a gun while it's being fired and not take any damage to your hand. Read the description if you don't believe me for some reason.
@Jito463

I know this is an old post, but I thought I'd add my two-cents to it. My conceal carry instructor (also, my pastor) told us that if we need to fire from within our coats in a life and death situation (e.g. we don't have time to draw the weapon), that we should hold the slide with our thumbs. The reason being, that it prevents the pocket from getting jammed into the slide; allowing us to pull the gun, clear the round and proceed to fire again. Same principle, really. Not good long term on the gun, I imagine, but there are real world scenarios where it can be beneficial to do so.

while true, there is still a real risk of sending a round through your hand if you don't get it out of battery fast enough. If the gun returns to battery it the gun will still be capable of firing. 2 reasons, first is the kinematics of a human arm. Make a first, then take your other hand and force it outwards(what you suggest) then do it inward. The grip will stay firm outwards but at a certain point inward your tendons can't stretch anymore and your muscles are forced to release their grip. Second, if you punch a gun in someones hand, it's probably going to go off and you're going to be shot. Plus you have more leverage and movement by forcing his arm inward to his chest.

Very interesting. I've always assumed it would have enough energy to give you a very nasty slide bite. Something I was willing to deal with if I had to because I thought if it could still cycle back it would most certainly still jam the weapon in a failure to eject and return to battery. So this proves it is without consequence (to your hand) if need be. Still obviously you do not antagonize a shot being fired but if the shooter is already active firing his weapon...might as well.

@@sense7074 Pistol projectiles only damage what they touch. Wounds are nearly always survivable if treated. Yeah it's still a bullet but that does not mean you are instantly out of the fight 100% of the time.

Can you show a video showing the same thing but with a revolver? Where you use the skin between the thumb and first finger to block the hammer.
@chrisoffutt8968
@chrisoffutt8968 6 лет назад
Hopefully the revolver doesn't have a hammer mounted firing pin. A standard hammer would just pinch and would hurt a little but a hammer mounted pin would poke a hole in you.

I learned this fro. A cop buddy, he was shown this technique because it creates a malfunction in the weapon (fte) so the bad guy can only get off one round without clearing it, that buys you time to draw your weapon or go for cover.

Yes. You can hold your thumb against the back of the slide and fire with no harm (Glock 22). Did it in training to demonstrate how little resistance is needed to keep the firearm from cycling... and how important it is to quickly clear the malfunction and get back in the fight.

Question? When I was in the Corps we had a diarming technique for the 1911 that if the barrel was grabbed front on, with palm over the barrel's opening, and pushed to the rear, the weapon would not fire. IS that still taught? Does that work with other SAs?. Note, we were also told to expect a shot through the palm if not executed right, but at least we'd have the gun.
@atypical_moto
@atypical_moto 6 лет назад
Greg Foster that sounds like terrible advice. Have you seen a point blank pistol gunshot wound to the hand? Best case scenario you'll never use that hand the same again. And you aren't going to use that hand for anything for the duration of the fight if you're even badass enough to fight through the horrors of what is left of your hand. You certainly won't be taking the pistol away from the guy with that hand.
@-007-2
@-007-2 5 лет назад
Interesting View - if done correctly the 1911 won’t fire, so your hand will be fine. Most semi auto pistols won’t fire when the slide isn’t in the correct position

Harry Key don't need to. There are escaping gasses at the chamber/barrel junction on a revolver and they can hurt you. Maybe not blow your finger off, but enough to cut you if you somehow are holding it in the right place
@TheGuardianOfFate

the most important part about gun disarming is to bring the gun to another direction, so it doesnt point at you anymore. it is more dangerous if it's a revolver. but if you do the technique properly, it still works.

While in a tactical situation or straight up warfare combat this is less usefull, your random go to thug on the streets that wants to mob you up has more restraints in shooting, they mostly aren't used to the stress or only want to intimidate so they can rob people or whatever. By shooting someone they put more on the line. That being said, by executing this moove they will most likely fire the gun out of shock. If executed properly the resulting incapability to load the rounds will result in huge confusion for the aggressor and give you the upper hand to use your other combat expertise.

I would like to add something here*Clears throat* DO NOT TRY TO GRAB A ROBBERS HANDGUN, You will NOT move faster then most can pull a trigger Best case you get shot in the arm, Do not fight you stuff is not worth your life, And if you get kidnapped Taken style, Its better to wait when you captors are distracted, Leave and call for help, Do NOT go for the shotgun and try to get out with a hail of gun fire, It Wont Work.
