Me driving across the oldest of the Cooper River Bridges the day before they closed. Not the best video, but it's the fact I have one. This bridge struck terrible fear into the hearts of those near it, but the Drum Island dip between the two trusses is purely amazing.

I remember being stationed at HAAF and having to drive over these two bridges going to and returning from Bragg, real fun on a Harley! I miss those days.

I loved the Grace Bridge, it had a lean to one side and was better than six flags. Made Charleston special.

I just came across this video. Thanks! My family lived on Sullivan's Island from 1939 to 1950. I went to grade school in town and rode this bridge on a school bus every day. In 1946 a ship hit the bridge and I believe it was a family of 5 that plunged into the river and drowned. We had to cross the river on a ferry boat for a few weeks. I have great memories of 11 years on Sullivan's Island but was always scared of riding over the Grace Memorial. Love the video though.

I drove both of those bridges back in the day on my old Harley, I hated them but it was an adventure at the same time!

Like rolling along a wooden coaster. Imagine traveling on that bridge in a Lincoln Town Car 1990 with low air suspensions.

When the bridge closed it had a sufficient rating of 4.0 out of 100. It was in serious shape and it was seriously a white knuckle ride. I believe this is one of the scariest bridges ever to have existed. This film was taken in 2005 the very day before it closed forever...I think that was July 13, 2005. I wish the video had turned out better, unfortunately.

Been across it a few times, never had the nerve to drive it. You got guts to go that fast. And I don't think it is a pointless video. I may never have driven across it, but I love Charleston, and this was one of the landmarks. Now it will be preserved on video. Good job.

This video was shot on the old bridge when it was one way. Imagine going over it with cars coming at you in the other lane. Grew up in Chas in the 40s the terror is still familiar. Driving over it when I got my license in 52 was a white knuckler for sure.

We used to routinely make the same trip someone else posted about, from Savannah to Shallotte, to visit family, in the early 2000s. My wife kept her eyes closed the whole time. I was terrified the first time, but learned to enjoy it.

The Bay Bridge in Annapolis Maryland is comparable to Grace Memorial. The MD bridge is taller, more winding and 4.6 miles long. After watching this driver go over, I can cross it off my list from ever needing to go over it. The older bridges have short guard rails. A lot of the new ones are built so you can't see the water.

Oh good grief, this bridge! When I lived in Charleston, this was still a two-way bridge--no fun and scary as all get-out! I took the Silas Pearman instead whenever possible. Memories!

Love Charleston, HATED that bridge. Seriously, I now have a phobia and get panic attacks due to that bridge and the old Skyway after the accident. I know someone from Charleston in his 60s. Said he hid on the floorboard going over that bridge. In 1995 a safety inspection graded it 4/100, 4%. SMH. Charleston needed a new bridge way before getting one.

the fact you have this is amazing, yeah the bridge was a little scary but, it was awesome too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks as if you drove over the newer of the two truss spans first then the older narrower one.

No the Pearman bridge has three lanes and probably wouldn't have been replaced if it were high enough. The bridge they were driving on had two lanes and was aging and poorly maintained, which was the John P. Grace memorial Bridge.

The fact of how narrow those bridges were really made them seem extra high above the water, I could never get up the nerve to cross them

You can even see the difference in approach grades between the original bridge, the parallel span, and the new bridge. As for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (Maryland's equivalent to the old bridges), I prefer the older two-lane span as it has concrete "Jersey" walls; the newer span has the same rails as the original Cooper River Bridge, and as such, makes me feel ill in my stomach.

I had nightmares about a bridge for 30 years after moving from the Charleston area. I know Grace Memorial Bridge. was the reason why. They finally stopped, thank goodness.

On the last day of this bridge I faked a brake down as I left Mt. P. For like 5 or so minutes we had traffic at rush hour back the fuck up we just about died laughing it was worth it
