I was fortunate enough to see Jefferson Airplane at the Winterland and Fillmore West several times. One night at the Winterland, Grace was wearing a white outfit and with the main white stage light she seemed to glow as she sang with her powerful voice! Won’t ever forget that night.

Ain't that the truth. I watched her on David Letterman and whenever he tried to be clever, she instanly came back with a response, though not rude or insulting, really put him in his place.

I used to lean on the stage and watch them both. Grave had a hell of a voice and I was hypnotized by Jacks eyebrows. I still can play hesitation blues and most of the old Tuna songs. Uncle Sam decided SE Asia was better for me and I left the city in late 1972. Never saw Grace slick after that but saw Jorma a few times. He had a antique car with HOTUNA plates. One great traditional guitar player and american songbook master. -

Grace came to Santa Fe about 15 years ago. This was an art gallery opening and she was the guest of honor with her paintings of white rabbits holding a paw with Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Garcia as they sail over a rainbow. I never once said "Jefferson Airplane" and all we talked about was art for a good 20 minutes. She gave me her undivided attention and nobody intruded. Jorma is not kidding because Grace was loud, bodacious, funny and edgy. She asked me if anyone ever told me I look a hell of a lot like Micky Hart! I said no I've never heard that before and she said, "Well you do! And he's damn good looking!" and she winked at me. I thought, "wow... I think Grace Slick is kinda coming on to me." I was also thinking, "wish we were both about 50 years younger and I think this might go somewhere." I gave her a book of the paintings of Michael Sowa who paints animals in surreal circumstances, amazing stuff she really enjoyed and I got a Christmas card from her shortly after.

There was a term that Jorma used twice in this interview that seemed fuzzed out / deleted. Does anybody know what the word was? I’m always impressed by Jorma’s eloquence and articulateness.

I think it's when he's saying that she was one of the boys when it came to her work ethic (kinda sexist, implying that women in showbiz weren't hardworking but whatever, he admits it's a bad metaphor)- "when you look at her, she's obviously not one of the boys, I get that...". Then there's "she was really the shit", so nothing consequential is left out.

I think Signe Anderson helped Grace a lot with her singing in the beginning when she was still with Great Society. Grace had model good looks, which helped. But she could sing and had street smarts.

Yeah, she had a self admitted problem with alcohol. She said it was her #1 drug of choice.

one of my favorite tunes is Eat Starch Mom cause it was Grace and Jormas only collaberation. i believe it was Jorma who pulled her from the wreckage of her freshly demolished aston - martin when they were drag racing.
